Gef writes: “as most of my songs are on stern environmental topics such as plastic pollution, destruction of rain forest, etc, I wanted a positive song to echo my lifetime love and interest in the natural world. My wife, Genny, and I have lived next to a 700 acre ancient woodland nature reserve and four extensive ancient commons in South Gloucestershire for more than 50 years. Most of the photos on this video were taken by us over a period of years. We have many more!”
In addition to song writing and singing, Gef is a well-known poet in the area and perhaps best known as a record producer with in excess of 500 albums to his credit on the Saydisc, Matchbox, Village Thing and Amon Ra labels.

When I walk these winter woods along their ancient ways
I think of season’s changing moods, from spring to autumn days
But winter is never barren or bare as all around can plainly be seen

Berries of ivy and frosted sloe, a winter meal allows
For blackbird and thrush to gorge themselves all through

Woodland insects for robin and wren in plenty to devour, devour

Dormouse now in leaf lined nest will sleep the winter long
Tawny owl will hunt the woods and hoot its eerie song
In frosty air the vixen calls, next season’s mate, her mate to meet
Badger searches field and hedge for wormy fare to eat, to eat

Soon the dark green bluebell shoots through mossy beds will spring
Loud the soulful song of thrush round woodland rides will ring
Hawthorn’s fragile leaves unfurl, the blossom of the pure white sloe
Spring comes again once more, its beauty for to show, to show
