Winter Hay Bale Deliveries / Using Homemade ATV Bale Mover

I just finished making my ATV hay bale mover and now I am putting it to the test. Over the years, we have always hired a local farmer to move our bales but that has come to an end. With this bale mover, I can now place the bales where I want without hiring an additional person or buying a tractor.

Great work!!! I always appreciate it when someone has a problem and instead of whining or throwing tons of money at it they find a way to get the job done anyway.

This is my second year using it and I'd guess it's move close to 200 bales so far. Works great unless it's extremely muddy, then I have to wait for frozen ground.

The longer the tongue, the easier it is to back. I have one I use behind a pickup and it originally had a 6 ft tongue until I extended it to 8ft. Night and day difference.Hope the automatic clutch holds up in your 4 wheeler. It will be mighty hard on it.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Good to know about the tongue, I was planning to extend it this summer. As far as the clutch, the Sportsman is rated to pull 1200 pounds according to the specs., I can see how over time it will wear it down possible thought. I am about to release another video on this cart in the next couple days. It shows a closer look at how everything is put together. Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated!

I Have a 35 hp loader that I use. However, I think your invention would work better in some softer ground. Thanks for sharing.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
I've seen loaders used many times to move bales but not locally. The farms around me have tractors but they only have the 3 point spears on the back, no loader spears. That's always made it trick to unload, especially the balage (completely wrapped and heavy as hell). You are right though, I think this bale mover will save me from rut fixing in the Spring.

Nice creation. Wouldn't mind to have one myself lol. I was already subscribed to your bee channel and just subscribed to this one. Keep up the good work
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 5 лет назад
Yes, I recognize your username from my bee channel, thanks for subbing over here too! The hay cart has been very handy on the farm. I've used it 2 full winters now to move our bales, it's moved over 500 bales now and a lot of those moves were a 1/4 mile or so away. The only thing I've had to do is replace my winch. I added a bigger one and it made a huge difference in lift time.

O and I have a couple tractors and all hay equipment....i like to control my hay qaulity....just recently purchased a square baker, accumulator, and grapple to make sqaures... I make a bit of extra hay and because of the model I'm on a number of people want my hay....i just drilled orchard grass into my hay fields this fall to improve it even more....love the videos keep it up
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Trust me, I understand control your hay quality but all you have to do is be picky with who you buy from not buy equipment. lol I understand also that people like me, need people like you to make quality hay. Thanks! Now I am curious, Do you have a dove-tailed trailer for those that don't own a tractor? That setup works really well for us to roll the bales off.
@danielthomason5685
@danielthomason5685 6 лет назад
I do not own a gooseneck trailer yet looking for one, as of right now everyone that buys rolls lives within a few miles so I deliver 2 at a time with tractor or a couple come pick up
@danielthomason5685
@danielthomason5685 6 лет назад
In my area everyone worries about quantity of hay they don't really understand qaulity...they all tease me cause I cut so early, I get about 30 to 35 percent less hay per cut but I get 1 to 2 more cuts, and the hay tests out almost 60 percent higher than the others I've had tested ...so me and my customers are happy, and so are the cows

Very nice Jason, well done!!! I have four tractors around the farm and a skid loader, handling hay bales isn't an issue here but I row crop primarily so it's equipment on hand already. One of these would be really nice though because I don't always have a tractor handy over on the three mile farm and an ATV is always handy. Okay, who is the ignorant prick that disliked this video?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
There is always haters my friend. I have them on the beekeeping channel as well. Over there though, one of them is my cousin. My channel growth kinda pee'ed in his cheerios and he hasn't been happy about it for 2 years. We started making videos at the same time but his channel flopped. lol (He needs to grow up) As mentioned before, I follow Greg Judy who uses no equipment (except and atv) so I am working to make as much of that possible as I can. I would love to see more people realize they do not need expensive equipment to make a living farming. As a matter of fact they will probably make more $$ not having equip. payments. I just upgraded to this ATV about 3 months ago. Up until then I was using a little 2 wheel drive Kawasaki Bayou 220. lol I have to give it credit as I have put it through hell pulling and pushing things over the years and it still runs great. The Polaris Sportsman seems decent so far, plenty of power and it's 4x4. I just added my canvas cab, heated hand grips and heated thumb accelerator. They are awesome. Maybe I should do a video on them.
@Digger927

Ha, I can always count on some of my relatives to be the biggest wet blanket in my life. I think there is no one else in the world that would love to see me fail more than some people I'm related to. Jealous hearted trash is what they are. Gregg uses whatever equipment he deems necessary, he's just a minimalist and he's good at that and it works for him. It's smart for sure. I get by on as little as possible but a row cropper just can't get by without quite a bit of equipment and most of mine is paid for so I don't think that conflicts with Greg's format. I do have the "new truck" problem he speaks about, lol. My old one was starting to nickel and dime me to death and down time is expensive as well. I don't buy a new truck very often though and it's a work tool so I can justify that one. A vid on the heated accessories would be good, I always wondered how those worked.

Nice design. Much more efficient than a big tractor. I would like to have seen some long close up shots on that hauler with some discussion on parts used. What ton is the electric winch and do you have the cable looped around a pulley for extra leverage or is it one line direct pull?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Well thanks, I have moved over 100 round bales with it this winter and each of them is roughly 1000 pounds. I will make another video that shows more detail to my creation.

I've though about putting together a ebook or something on building this cart. Just watching the video does not cover all the basis to building one, trust me. lol I tried and it's taken a bunch of extra work to figure out how to reduce leveraging the bale off the ground without lifting rear of atv off the ground. This project has kept me busy in between farm chores trying to get everything just right!

37 years buying up bull calves for families in need i use to have a tractor for plowing my long drive way cleaning up all the poo, but in 2006 my ex wife sold it on me well i was away, i pick up all my hay, being i broke my back at work some years ago i cant roll a 1500 Lb bale of the trailer so i put a rope around each bale and tie off the a tree and drive a head until all bales are off, i go once a month for hay, then to get the bales into the field as they need, i again put a rope around the bale and drag it with my truck to the field, for them, it gets harder and winter come on due to the deep snow, but i fight to get it though the gate, so i cant really move them around the whole field to get a good spread all over, then i spend the spring an summer pitch forking poo on to the trailer an pictch forking it off the spread it out, check it out

I have been wondering how to move bails without a tractor myself. This is absolutely genius. How many attempts did this take you to get it to work the way you wanted
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 5 лет назад
This cart works great. I wasn't wanting to invest in a tractor either. It took a few different tries to get it working well. I have used it for 2 winters now and have moved over 200 round bales with it. I see a couple additions I want to add but haven't taken the time.
@tangle70

I like the hay hauler and you should patent them as said below. How much of a strain does that put on the 4 wheeler? Would it put excessive wear on the transmission?
@tangle70
@tangle70 6 лет назад
I am not sure about the Fund Me thing. I see people doing it, but am not sure how well it works. I did not know that they where rated to haul that much. I moved to Tennessee and a couple of years ago and the thing that I found odd was the hay spikes on the back of pickup trucks. I would think that a hay spike on a ATV would go good here since the farms are smaller than where I grew up.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
I have actually seen the bale spears on truck around here as well, pretty cool idea. I don't see very many but a few here and there. Today's utility Atv's are able handle a good amount of weight. They are building them to be work horses.
@kaygander1361
@kaygander1361 6 лет назад
Amazing! That is too awesome. Is your four wheeler 4 wheel drive? If so, do you use 4 wheel for moving them at all? &did you have to reinforce the back of the four wheeler at all? ..I need to have something like that. New to the farming thing and I don't have much to work with. Cold weather really brings a few challenges/complications.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
The atv is 4 wheel drive but I have hardly needed it so far. I imagine once we get snow it will be required. I did not reinforce the atv at all, what you see is stock. This creation has helped me a lot so far and I am sure it will continue to do the same.
@kaygander1361
@kaygander1361 6 лет назад
Very impressive. Good job. Last year i hooked up a trailer to the four wheeler that was meant for a truck. it had 5 bails on it and but it had to be done cause cows were hungry and mooooing like crazy..(accidently left my gate locked so the trailer was unable to make it through and parked outside the gate) it was hard on the four wheeler and had to go in 4 wheel drive just to move. I got in the gate and then had a slight incline and the four wheeler wasn't able to really go much further, kept spinning out. So I stopped and pushed most of the bails off there. I didnt like doing that too much cause i know that one was hard on the fourwheeler. But it was a trooper that time.lol. &the cows were happy.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 6 лет назад
Oh my, that sounds exciting, I have had a few of them days. I hate when I have to drop bales right inside a gate, the cattle always make it muddy this time of year and it's a problem until Spring. What size is your atv? Mine is a Polaris Sportsman 500 and it's rated to pull around 1100 pounds and it's belt driven which impressed me. I just put some really deep treated mud tires on and that has helped a lot with avoiding 4 wheel drive.

Grazing Acres Farm I have a Yamaha big bear 400, and it has a wentch in the front but I recently broke off the hook. The twined cable holding the hook was beginning to split and eventually broke. I don't have the owners manual so I'm not too sure what I am "able to haul". ..and when I hauled that trailer it was the (5) big round bales and a hay wagon.

Have you tried to find the atv manual on Google? I was able to find a link on a Polaris Forum and it was free. Good luck!
