The following is an excerpt from the pamphlet of "Cultural Property Designated Garden Special Scenic Spot Kenrokuen" published by the Kanazawa Castle Kenrokuen Management Office in Ishikawa Prefecture.
"Kenrokuen retains the characteristics of the typical Hayashi Spring Walking Daimyo Gardens of the Edo period.
Originally, Kenrokuen Garden was a garden that belonged to the castle as the outer wall of Kanazawa Castle.
As for its history as a garden, the sloping land facing the castle is old. In 1676 (Enpo 4), the 5th lord of Kaga Domain, Maeda Tsunaki, moved the work that was in this area to the castle, built the Lotus Pavilion, and created a garden around it. This was the beginning of the main garden, and at that time it was called Lotus Garden. ・・・
In 1822 (Bunsei 5), the magnificent retreat of the 12th feudal lord, Saihiro, "Takezawa Goten" was completed. In the garden, Tatsumi irrigation water was taken in to create a curved water, and various stone bridges were built. In the year of the completion of the Takezawa Palace, it was named "Kenrokuen" in the sense that it combines the six victories of Hongdae and Yue, human power and blue guo, water springs and vistas, taken from the text of the "Luoyang Famous Garden Record" written by the Chinese Song Dynasty poet Li Jifei. ・・・
On May 7, 1874 (Meiji 7), Kenrokuen Garden was opened to the public. On March 8, 1922 (Taisho 11), Kenrokuen was designated as a "scenic spot" in accordance with the provisions of the "Historic Site Scenic Natural Monument Preservation Law", and in 1950 (Showa 25), it was designated as a "scenic spot" again by the current "Cultural Property Protection Law".
Furthermore, on March 20, 1985 (Showa 60), it became a "special scenic spot".
