I live in Panama (tropical weather without weather stations 😅pretty warm all year around) and over here, people always complain about alocasias always dying in them, mainly because people use terrible substrates, people have terrible watering skills and just not giving the plant what it needs… I used to be one of them.. killed a bunch!!!!! but ever since I have them all in Leca and Pon .. I always say semi-hydro is a live insurance for Alocasias. There’s only one amazonica that I got from the supermarket, that went dormant after transferring , she left 36 children under my care 😅 and it’s been already about 6 months and she won’t come back despite the good rooting system … I’m just waiting for her come back. Maybe she is waiting for the kids to go university so she doesn’t have to take care of them 😂😂😂😂

Those tall and tough leaf alocasia always thrive. Its those jewel and velvet alocasia that are premadonias.

I'm new to LECA but learning heaps from your channel, thank you. I've never had an Alocasia but they are so beautiful I'm going to look for one at the local markets and get it into LECA. It was bitter cold this winter, not surprised your poor plants went dormant. I'm in the Yarra Valley in the outer east, it's great to have somebody local talking plants.

Hi Nora. My first Alocasia (Polly) was fabulous until spider mite attacked but I was able to get 7 corms out of the soil it came in and after all the leaves dropped off I switched her stump to leca. Meanwhile the corms were growing in their own little leca pots. Once mother grew her new leaf I put them all together into a larger pot of leca with a water meter and they are all off and running. My husband can’t stop giving me progress reports on each new, shiny leaf that pops up. The plant was given to us when our grandson passed away just over a year ago and it’s such a lovely memory of a beautiful young man who was very special to us, so the corms kind of represent the children he was never to have. I also bought a very small silver dragon and it’s almost big enough now to transfer to leca, I was waiting for some corms to develop in the soil and our weather to warm up. The next few weeks should see us well into spring and ready to go. Thanks for sharing all your Alocasia plants regardless of size.

OMG... thanks for sharing....I am new to Leca, but I truly have a love/hate relationship with Alocasias. I love the look of them....but they don't like me. I will continue to try....ugh....they are killing me

@@TheLecaQueen I got one from bunnings for $5 had only 2 leaves but still going strong. I haven’t had the courage to move it to leca yet. Hahahha but have seen quite a few silver dragons at bunnings. I also got a sinuta and melo from bunnings! Couldn’t resist!

I've had my alocasias outside all summer (in Northeastern USA) and they have been thriving! Thanks for the inspiration to move them inside this weekend before the temps really drop! Now you have me second guessing their usual indoor home - it might be too drafty. I just don't want to lose all the growth they had this summer.

Soy amante de tus plantas y tus videos, te escribo desde España , espero que puedas entenderme, si no es así te lo traduciré. Yo tengo orquideas y gracias a ti , ya tengo bastantes alocasias. Vivo en Mallorca que tiene un clima muy parecido a Melbourne, y las alocasias me rompen el corazón cada invierno. Me gustaria saber si en invierno, cuando tienes plantas que pierden las hojas sigues regando. He escuchado que te gusta hacerles pasar un poco de sed, pero ¿suspendes el riego por completo mucho tiempo?. Voy a cultivar alguna Alocasia bebe que tengo repetida en leca a ver que tal se me da. Gracias por compartir tanto , de verdad. GRACIAS

Hi. You are so passionate and charismatic person it is a pleasure to hear you talk about your plants. But you really scared me by that video where you said that allocasias will 💔. So I can't sleep at night since then 😂 You shouldn't curse planty people like that! We can be sensitive, you know. Today I have 14 types of alocasia in my care. I had my first ever alocasia about 5 month ago. I've been into plants for five years already, but aroids started for me only 2023. It wasn't easy with my first two alocasias. I got them by mail when the weather was cool and repoted them in my self created soil mix the same day. They were imported from Netherlands L size plants, planted in something unknown with no drainage, and their roots were trapped in a nursery net. I had to do it. They lost some of the roots in a process. The mistake I made was to water them after the repotting. The next day they had spots on every leaf. And I thought they gonna die on me. But they didn't. Now they gave me 2 new leaves bigger than my head with no spots. Fingers crossed.Then I got others 5 as babies in sphagnum all gave me a leaf or two. Two dropped older leaves. Next I decided to buy Purple Sward Alocasia in a local store. It happened to be first snow day. I have no car. The soil was absolutely wet. So I decided to take all of the soil from its roots just in the shop. I covered the roots with an orchid bark packed the plant, as good as I could, and brought it home. Planted in the same soil mix. For a few days she showed no sighns on the leaves at all, and in a few days she dropped one leaf and showed a small yellow spots on other leaves. But in a last month she gave me a new leaf and it's the biggest. Only my baby Green Shield is not doing well now, but I know why. I bought it planted in black aquarium substrate in a winter time by mail. I believe it was too cold for the roots in that thing. Also after that I couldn't get it right how to water it. Definitely I'm not ready for a peat free substrat, but some day I'll give it a chance. Another Heterophylla Alocasia that came in the same mail package in sphagnum moss gave me two leaves in a month period of time. I bought Cuculata for New Year. It was on sale. Had two leaves no roots and a bit of spider mites. It dropped a leaf and just today I'm getting new one. And you say that it's not gonna be this way 😭 next. Surely, this is not about us but the conditions we give. I give mine a lot of led light, treat them with certain trusted organic products and give them most of the attention umong all of my other more then 150 plants. I use a certain type of pots and the soil mix I created happen to be good for them. The watering is got to be right in time... For today they are easiest among my aroids... no need for moss poles... Easy to measure when to water... Leca or pon is perfect in a certain conditions, but if you live sonewhere in Eastern Europe in winter season the temperature in homes drops even lover than 17 C and they have to stay in the cold water... I don't know how to deal with it may be a heat mat may save the game...

All the best with your Alocasia. And that blue velvet chair is completely random. I bought it to live in my guest bedroom when we lived in a different house. It has no where to go in our current home so has now become the iconic blue chair! That matches with my hair! (see what I did there?) 😂😂

Heya Nora, I am in the Mornington Peninsula and all my alocasias are all throwing out new leaves and none is in dormant. I have heat mats for the alocasia divas and the rest are fine. Don't know why though.

I love alocasias. My alocasia polly was the first plant I put in leca and its thriving. I tried to put a black velvet in leca and its struggling. I think it might fake leca I bought from amazon so I will switch it out.
