The Japanese Maple Gardening year: March - Danger Month
A look at the dangers that Japanese maples face when leafing out. Feeding, frost protection and repotting are discussed. March can vary great deal from year to year and while feeding is recommended, in a wet month its better to delay repotting until rainfall is less and the trees are in full bloom!
Ideal for beginners or more experienced Japanese Maple growers, in these videos I will show what practical steps I take to keep my Acer trees healthy during a year of gardening!
I hope you will follow me in my adventures with these wonderful trees
This video will help you grow better trees and for those with more experience, who want to improve the autumn colour, health and general quality of their Maples. Colour can also be improved all year by giving trees the right amount of sun.
This video is about:
Fall colors, Japanese acer, Japanese acer care, Japanese acer in pots, Japanese acer leaves curling, Japanese acer maple tree, Japanese acer scorched leaves, Japanese acer tree, Japanese acer uk, Japanese maple, Japanese maples care, Japanese maples in containers, Japanese maples in pots, Japanese maples varieties, Maples, acer, autumn, fall colors, fall foliage, garden, garden answer, garden tour, gardening, maple, shrubs, Japanese maple care, autumn ambience

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I did repot 3 acers today , but I will stop there. Just super keen on making them strong and with the growing spurts they all have just had. I made the wrong decision. Just have to ensure they dont get frosted or too much water . Thanks again.

With a bit of TLC I’m sure they will be fine, just keep them sheltered 👍

It's more an issue of drainage. If the soil you repotted with is well draining it's dosnt matter too much. JM like wet roots in a really free draining mixture. I have loads I have let grow and others I have developed into bonsai and from experience its drainage that is key. With good drainage you can water more often and then they grow like crazy. Obviously you balance the amount of drainage with your ability to water but even moderate drainage is easy to keep up with and makes a hell of a difference.

Hi, thanks for the tips. A question if you'd be so kind. I have about 10 acers in pots, that I've made a new bed for, they range in size quite a lot. I was planning to plant them fairly soon in this bed, going off this video do you think I should wait a while (a month perhaps?)
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
Glad you found it useful. Yes indeed I would wait until the weather is less changeable and the trees are fully out of dormancy. I have clay soil so I would add some pebbles in the hole I dig for them too to aid drainage. After the first year the roots will be more established and you’re sorted. They will grow much faster once planted out, so don’t underestimate the amount of space they will need! I will do a video on this soon. Thx for the question, Carl

@@Japanesemaples thanks for the reply. Am also on clay so will bear the drainage in mind. I'll wait a month or so

Have you thought of a more free draining soil for them if the fear is damp soil from a repot ?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
Hi it’s a double edged sword really as this would be a great solution but they would then need more watering in the summer. If I was at home most of the time then this would be an option 👍

Hello, I have a question. Did you leave those seedlings outside during the winter, and what zone do you garden in?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
Hi and yes all winter in zone 8. Hope that helps. Carl

@@Japanesemaples I have two seedlings that size and I am planning to leave them outside this year. My garden zone is 7. Thank you.

What do you think about fertilizing variegated-leaf maples? Is it true that fertilizing these varieties will cause the leaf to lose its variegation?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
Can only say that I’ve never heard of it before… but some sort of fertiliser will eventually be needed as the trees can’t grow without it! Carl
@MNH73
@MNH73 4 месяца назад
I believe this is the case with some variegated deciduous plants. The nitrogen in the feed can encourage chlorophyll which makes green more dominant. You want these trees to leaf out slowly to encourage the variegation so could delay feeding until later in the spring
@TS50ER
@TS50ER 4 месяца назад
@@MNH73 I have a Higasayama that is just breaking bud. The spring leaf on these plants is superlative; with some new leaves starting out green, which can be mistaken for reversion. I can concerned that fertilizing could ruin the spring show. Thank you for the advice about waiting a while before applying fertilizer, I am thinking perhaps even a weakened dose when I do
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
@@MNH73you may well be right, I would mention however that this feed slow releases over many months and is Nitrogen poor. Would have to experiment. Thanks for the tip!
