This is our story of January 2024 on our English Farmstead (Vlog 21).
Its been a cold start to the year, with some tough growing conditions, Rodents and losses, but we have had some really EXCITING improvements happening in our Workshop/storage shed - we are really making use of this AMAZING space and when the weather is fine I have been enjoying some winter gardening in our Food Forest and Polytunnels 💚
We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest.
We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

The frosts haven't been as harsh or as long as they were last winter so i've only lost a few salad type plants (lettuce, chicory, pak choi) so far. All my perennial kales and cabbage seem fine at the moment, and i still hopefully have three large intact yacon plants to harvest over the coming weeks. Your building looks more like a chalet or log cabin than a workshop/shed. Very smart. Shoes off no doubt before entering!

Hey Tony, Glad to hear you garden is doing well AND that you still have Yacon to harvest 🙌 We really need to get on and do a big harvest and start dividing some plants up! Yes, agreed the cold spells haven't lasted as long this year, we had one freakish night, it was focast to go down to -4 here, which we'd had on other nights, but it was strange, the ground went rock solid, but there was very little actual visual frost (it was the night before I filmed the winter gardens tour actually) it felt much colder, in a different way and it was that night that effected our plants the most! ... mainly lettuce and some of the weaker Brassicas - so far the purple sprouting are holding on, 🤞which is what we lost mostly last year in that genus! Just hoping the weather is kind to us from here on. Its amazing how adding the extra window has changed the look of the shed, I said the same as you to Dan 😂 We're trying to keep a pair of indoor crocks in there so we can do a shoe change on the way in 😃
