When I was young I was in the Boy Scouts, we did all of our camping trips in the winter time. Enjoyed the hell out of it , never thought about the cold weather, always had fun times. Today at 57 my body could not take the cold or sleeping on the ground anymore. I loved those days and do miss them.

Frame the front in and make a simple wood stove out of an ammo can or old propane tank. The old snowmobile trail sheds are larger with a dirt floor so you can have your fire inside under cover at least and retain more heat.

Ps- you don’t need an axe.. especially a 3/4 axe. As said below / just burn one end of it, Feed it through the fire. Save your energy. Also suck on hard candy just prior to sleep- boosts your sugar intake and increases your metabolism. Drink tons of water because in very cold weather your body needs a lot more water to digest your food intake. Pee before going right to bed; so you don’t wake up at 2-3am- having to pee. Throw in wool socks into bottom of Sleeping bag-prior to leaving from home. Swap out at night for socks of the day wear liner socks under wools socks to wick away foot perspiration. ( Been camping/climbing/arctic winter mountaineering for 72 nights a year for 45 years.). Love that your outdoors a lot

If u ever go back to this place..5. suggestions 1. Place hooks on the ground floor beam..this way u can pull down the tarp n tie the tarp to the hooks 2. Make a wood box.. to place some wood n tools 3. Next time make a C shape fire protector n place some tin foil on it.. That way.. Ur fire protector logs won't burn out n send the heat toward the hut. 4. Place a space reflective blanket on the inside of ur Hut.. Brings the hot air down...ud be warm 5. Carry a hot water bottle with wood cover.. Fill it with hot water.. Place it inside ur bag.. 15min before u get in ur cocoon sleeping bag. Ur feet will be warm

Everyone needs to do this to experience just how good and relaxing it is to be self sufficient for an overnight trip in the woods during winter conditions. By the time you have your shelter and fire going, you feel pretty good about yourself. Then when you make a supper you can enjoy by the fire, it is a feast you will remember. A little smaller area in that lean to might have been easier to heat and hold the heat if you made a quick reflective wall of simple vertical pieces of wood in a wall. But if you are warm enough and content just use it your way and enjoy.

The shelter appears well built. Of course it should have a front wall running have way across to the support pole. And even a wall going from the support wall towards the back leaving a door to enter the enclosed area. Similar to how a proper dog house is built with an inner partially closed off area to help keep the wind out. I found it funny you would carry a heavy ax but not a light sleeping pad.

Wish I'd have thought of that too...when I was about 16 we went on outward bound training in winter in the English lake district, someplace high up above Borrowdale. It was sub zero temperatures, we all left our boots in a row out of the snow bewteen the tent and the fly sheet at one end. Next morning they were all frozen solid. We smacked them loose then held them fairly close to a primus stove to make them semi usable. I guess our instructor should have lnown better. But we just had a laugh and carried on...@@Entrailss

Things to leave at the shelter would be a square shovel and broom, hung up under the ridge. A sheetmetal stove would require far less fuel; with a chimney through the wall it would be OK to drop the canvas, so the entire structure would be warm and dry. The siding might be better run vertically, with battens over the gaps; this would reduce draughts; and a longer overhang would keep the floor in better condition. Putting a built-in bench near the back wall would make a nicer place to sleep, and gear could go under the bench so that drifting snow doesn't cover it. Axe needs something to cover the edge, otherwise a trip and fall could be lethal.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 6 лет назад
I completely agree and can see your vision, here. In addition I'm thinking shelving for more wood and kindling, as well as a few shelves (perhaps even with doors). A more permanent fire pit with stone reflector would be nice, though my stones tend to explode when near the fire ... Thanks for the ideas!

That is a nice looking shelter you have and with that sleeping bag you should be able to sleep good at night as long as the fire is burning.

Funny how many comments appear here are by people who have never slept outdoors overnight in snow country, and can't imagine why anyone would do such a thing. Let me put it this way. You learn a lot the first time, and you learn it the hard way. You learn life's little lessons that are true only in cold country, like learning that hard part of the game is not about staying warm, which is pretty easy to do. It is about staying dry more than anything else. And you learn that your own breath can be an enemy, because it is so wet.

The professional craftsman camper, without torture LOL... I still love that secure look of your shelter, and you didn't even need the curtain. could be turned into a super shelter by just adding a piece of plastic #Awesome

Yeah, after that chilly night I thought plastic and something reflective on the ceiling (emergency blankets, say) would be nice. thanks!

Regardless of others' comments, I like the simplicity of this video. You weren't trying to prove anything, just have an overnight outing in the edge of the woods! What's wrong with doing it your own way? Advice is good when it's helpful, otherwise just watch and enjoy. I trust you did just that metaspencer.

You may want to store a broom at the shelter for sweeping out the snow. Also, you get a sheath for that axe from Amazon or on ebay.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 6 лет назад
Great ideas ... a broom is on my list, as is a more permanent fire ring and some storage. I'm thinking the far end could be a nice set of shelves for firewood and whatnot. Thanks for the tips!

Another thing you can reliably count on when you google winter camping on You Tube is an avalanche of videos by people who don't know how to stay warm and comfortable without a fire. Oh sure, you can tough it out overnight, but why put yourself through that ordeal when you can be comfy? I pay attention to the details on films like this. The lack of sleeping pad was a no-brainer, but among other things, I noticed that the OP didn't bother to change into dry socks before getting into his sleeping bag. That guarantees cold paws until they eventually dry out in the bag.

Better you than me, the closest I like to get to cold, is no heat in the bed room and crack the window at night. I did snow blow this morning in the lowest high temperature in all recorded weather history this morning. Glenn Lever

I find these videos super calming. The best part: when you whipped out a knife and started whittling. Did you make the wooden knife you used to slice your fish?

Talking about roughing it lol, no fire throughout the night, hard floor with snow, cold boots to put on. Nice video though and partial shed structure. As at least one other commented on a better fire source, I would have some type of fireplace to keep fire going thru the night. Also a couple doors to shut but still not air tight, a dollar store broom hanging up, and a roll out mat. When I get kicked out for the night, the Pit Bull goes with me and we need to stay warm lol. Thanks for posting nice scenery and sound.

You really seems to like the wild nature. I wonder why you did use any special mattress. It keeps cold away and you sleep better. I liked your video. When I was in the army we had to learn cope in the forest. It was - 25 in C. :) But when I was younger it was just fun. When I was a kid we used to built shelters in the forest during the summer time and we used to sleep there.

@@metaspencer I also thought wood floor is too hard and cold to be comfortable (I mean tolerable), but I figured since the shelter is there, why NOT use the floor? With that said, of course a pad would have been nice. If you're like me, you're tough enough to endure when you have to, and wise enough to not do such if you don't. Cool little 3-sider.
