On this episode of Hidden Gems we explore the unique winter fishery the main stem of the Shenandoah River has to offer. The Shenandoah River has been through dark times ever since the massive fish kills of the early 2000s… it is safe to say that the river is bouncing back!

Love you footage man, and watching other people rip lips around the area. I see them float by all the time and at 2:24 in your clip is my family’s river lot. If you’re ever interested in linking up to yak fish I’d be game to get footage while ripping lips and giving some fish some PTSD haha.

That was fire! Grear short video! Hmmm....after striking out during 3 hours at the Massanutten ramp upriver side on the S Fork a few weeks ago, your making me think about trying the main stem again for the first time in years. I also have barely ever caught anything in the Upper Potomac around point of rocks area and downstream, but have never tried farther up by WVA and MD and the mouth of the Shenandoah.... I might have to get out there now that I have a 1.8hp motor on my kayak /grin.

I also was away from fishing for years immersed in life and other hobbies and totally missed the entire fish kill situation, or it just never registered on my radar as I must have heard about it. That is freaking terrible! Was the cause ever definitively determined? It makes sense to me now why I am catching more fish there compared to NoVa local waters, but still not that many and nothing good sized yet. I was banking on the upper river forks being less polluted and less pressured compared to NoVa but I'm starting to think I need to hit the main stem and even the farther upper Potomac in WVA/MD after watching your vids and interviews with guides. Damit man I hate the cold though lol!

There are prevailing theories on what caused the Fishkill… but you were correct. The Fishkill started, believe it, or not in the forks, and not the main stem 😊

@1cast1fish caught a 21 inch monster yesterday on a squarebill. We where fishing from kayaks. We had a decent day. Bite was a little slow but we caught walleye, smallies, 34” carp, channel cat. Never know what you’ll catch on a jig head with a night crawler
