Wet heavy snow, consistent warm temperatures, and equipment failure make for a challenging week at the cabin. Roofs must be shoveled and the chicken coop needs cleaning. Once our plow and snowblower are in good working order, we are able to tackle snow removal around the property and get back to more adventures. This journey takes us back out on the river to watch the longest toughest snowmachine race in Alaska.

Fifty-five years of life in Alaska taught me many things & one of the most important is……don’t be deceived by those warm February temps. I saw it happen many times. U can be assured that March & even April can kick your butts weather wise…….winter is not over. Good luck with the snow blowing & the “dognuts” looked delicious!!

That race was crazy fun! PS Don't forget, to consider, putting snow on the soil in the high tunnel. When it melts, may save a lot of time and effort getting your soil wet for planting. Remembered you 'complained' about the dryness last year.

Just be careful! You said your snow is heavy ... indicating it contains a lot of water. From your time in California we are always worried about getting enough water-filled snow. Test out a bucket full, let it melt and see how much water it contains. You don't want to have a sloshy, muddy mess let alone a flood!!

Winter forest - booming, like shots, croaking crows, snow from a spruce branch that fell by the collar, tracks in which the bottom is not visible, steam from wet mittens and parallel, now and then intersecting curves of ski tracks; spring forest - the smell of black, still frozen earth, flowing in all directions, choking with melt water, a stream, a thin white strip of skin blue from the cold between a sweater and jeans, and on it large pimples that can only be melted with lips; summer forest - hot drops of golden resin on copper bark, hair smelling of barbecue smoke, a white, daisy-covered sundress stained with dry red wine and a tickling pine needle that you can’t get at all if you don’t unbutton two thousand small, like ladybugs, buttons , rapidly spreading under the fingers along the back and chest.

This video had almost everything you guys see and do in winter (except for ice fishing) all in one video -- enjoying snow-covered trees, taking care of the chickens, baking, cooking, eating, snow removal, tool maintenance, and outdoor excursions (the snow machine race). I love how you guys are always so willing to eat outdoors in winter. And I love when Ariel wears her hair like that with the headband. She looks like a cute little mouse!

That snow reminds of here in Northern Michigan. The wet, heavy stuff is miserable; we call it "greasy". That snow is tough to drive in, shovel, blow, and a huge hazard on roofs. Also needs to be completely removed from vehicles so they don't fly off in sheets and shatter windshields. Respect for all your hard work.

Another Michigander here, I agree completely! This is also a reason why we use tarps to cover everything stored in our shed, hard to keep that blowing snow out

Hey guys. I saw you refill those small Coleman canisters with LPG from a bigger bottle. That is extremely dangerous as you have no idea if you're over pressurise that small canister. If it was to explode due to over pressurisation you would loose your hands or it could be fatal. To do a refill like that you'd need a regulator to slow the flow down, and a gauge on both the bigger bottle and smaller bottle so you know what pressure if coming out of the main tank and what pressure you're putting into the small one. I work I high pressure gas pipelines and wouldn't want to see you guys come unstuck with that sort of stuff. Stay safe and keep up the epic videos 😁
@kevink4914
@kevink4914 Год назад
The bigger tanks all have safety valves it will not over pressurize a 1 pound bottle. A 1 pound has the same amount of pressure released as a bigger tank and has a pressure relief valve.

That look's like my place in Winnipeg Manitoba. Most snow i've seen here in 25 years. They told everyone to get their ice fishing shack's off of the Red River and into Lake Winnipeg as they are going to start cutting the ice to break it up to allow for better flow. And they use a machine called an Amphibex it is a strange looking unit. It has almost like backhoe arms with big floats on each one. One on each side. With a huge saw on the front. It kind of looks like a crab..

Quick tip… after you refill the green one pounders, cap them. They do have a tendency to leak propane after a couple uses. Been refilling them for years! There are brass threaded caps that fit perfectly. We have also used 3/4” threaded pvc schedule 40 FPT Caps with excellent results.

Last I heard, 90% of the world's sea planes (which includes most bush planes in Alaska) are serviced by Kenmore Air, which is based down here in western Washington State, not far from Seattle. They have a lot of parts for swapping out wheels for runways, pontoons for lakes, and skis for snowfields, but they also have hybrid versions, pontoons with wheels, pontoons sturdy enough to be skis (ice in snow can scratch rather badly at a summertime pontoon). My family has been answering their misdials (our phone number looks like theirs) for over 40 years now, so I gave up and learned a bit about the company, and about sea plans and bush planes in general. NOT an expert on either those or the company, but they're good folks, and are justifiably proud of their pilots' abilities in snowfields, on glaciers, etc. One particular contract they had in the early 2000s was to fly in & out on supply runs for a high-altitude research station on a glacier, where the only way to land on such a short runway was to do so uphill so gravity stopped the plane in time, then turn it carefully around on the small flat spot on top, and fly out fast enough downhill to achieve lift on the first try. Zero problems, each & every time. That takes dedication to pre-flight checks, weather observations, & nerves of steel. Bush pilots tend to be highly underrated in their skills & abilities, because we often underestimate the conditions in which they have to take off & land. It's not the same as fighter jet piloting, no, but it can be difficult, even dangerous, and takes no less skill & ability to fly successfully, especially in winter. The folks I met at Kenmore Air in the early 2000s (I asked for a tour of their main shop, after having politely answered their misdials for 20+ years at that point, and they happily agreed) were absolutely dedicated to making their planes & repair jobs the safest and sturdiest possible, with palpable respect for the overall skills of the bush pilot community. ...I'm posting this because I know a lot of people don't understand just how tough & dangerous bush piloting can be, but also because we don't hear about the millions of safely flown & landed flights; we only hear about the tragedies. The folks who fly the supplies out to these remote villages Arielle mentioned are contending with bad weather, freezing temperatures, uncertain landing surfaces, abrupt sheer winds, and life-threatening conditions if they have to make an emergency landing for any reason. Support efforts & support personnel are absolutely vital on races like this, and I just think the pilots doing their share deserve some love & appreciation for a few moments. Also, big thanks to the remote communities who turn out to support the racers, including support shown in terms of food & lodging, repair assistance, fuel, and more. And of course, big thanks to the people who come out to cheer on these racers in the midst of thousands of miles of winter. Knowing that their efforts & skills are seen, that they're bringing excitement and entertainment to so many others, is what drives a lot of these folks to compete, even knowing they might not ever take first place.

Thankyou for this snippet from another side of life. I think most folks would go for a number-change - but your family has stayed the course, with courtesy. Big ups for that. And you're right about the skills of pilots working in remote areas!

A tip on refilling the 1lb canisters - weigh them on the scale before and after to make sure you are not overfilling, it might be dangerous
@2daloo829
@2daloo829 2 года назад
My experience is that they can't be overfilled if the air is not vented when filling. Actually, the one lb bottle won't even be full if the air is not purged when filling. I always use a scale and pull the pin (not push) on the schrader(?) valve to vent the trapped air. It's not easy since the pin is not easy to get to when coupled to the 20 lb er. 13 oz or less is all the liquid I can fill to unless I vent the air. If pulling the pin on the schrader valve to completely fill to 15-16 oz, be sure to listen carefully for any leakage around pin when released.
@temchik
@temchik 2 года назад
@@2daloo829 I never pulled the valve and managed to fill to about 16oz. So, ymmv, I guess

I live in Canada! Today we’re shovelling snow off the roof again for hundredth time this season. We still have power so that’s something to be thankful for. We have snowstorms all the time. Yup that’s living in bush country. Do you guys use chains on your snowblower? It really does make a huge difference.

That looks like a Honda 928 that is tracked. What's nice about it is you can make it float 1 in above the surface if you want if you've got gravel so it doesn't chuck it 150 ft. I have the same one and it's an animal.

@@nbco55 I’m definitely going to consider it. I’ve also been thinking getting some tracks for the quad. My parents have a plow attachment they just replaced and I’m totally claiming lol

Is there a gauge that you can attach to the small propane tanks to see how full they get? Or maybe you can weigh them to determine their fullness.
@MountainManMurphy
@MountainManMurphy 2 года назад
That's good idea/question - I wonder if they just stop taking propane once they're full. I sometimes use those small tanks on my camping trips on my channel so I'll have to see about that. Take care!

I think they could tell because you could hear it filling. When he flipped it back over it started filling back into the big tank.

Another great video. I had to laugh a couple of times when you were both cleaning up the snow, at the 9:24 mark when Eric let out the sigh, as here on our homestead in upstate New York cleaning up after a storm is a constant chore in winter. I have let out many a sigh this year. I also had to chuckle at the 9:31 mark when Arielle found herself suddenly unintentionally sitting in the snow because it was so deep. I have done that more than once this winter, and face planted in the snow a few times. I laughed in solidarity, and because I too often say "Okaaaay" when it happens. I take so much delight in watching you both homesteading in Alaska, as we homestead here in our own frozen north (if not quite so frozen), often wondering when we have challenging weather here, what you are dealing with there. The work never ends on a homestead. But by showing the snowmobile races, and the ice fishing, etc. you show that although there is a lot of hard work in the life you have chosen, there is still much joy. Like you, I feel it is, in all its challenges and joys, the best life to live. As always, I look forward to the next videos.
