@@MonicaKatie Well, in my limited experience, the soil has to warm up before they will really start to grow anyway. Not sure what kind of growing season you have, but here in south MS, we have quite a lengthy season. Hope you have a great week and God bless.

I thought that if I waited to the 1st of April I would have better luck. But, the weather didn't cooperate. So I only started two jugs of Larkspur. It just got too warm too fast. Warmer than usual so I started my seeds in my small portable greenhouse instead. I'll balance our winter better next time. It is a learning experience. It looks like you are having great success! That is great! Like seeing it, congrats! Enjoyed as always, take care!

Great results!!! I have over 30 jugs and all have germinated but my calendula and agastache 🤷🏻‍♀️I’m hoping they wake up soon. Zone 6a NE Ohio. This is my first year so I’m looking forward to your transplanting video.

@Michael - yes, temperatures this year have been warmer earlier than last. Glad you have a greenhouse as an alternative.

I have no germination yet on my Columbine but expect it will sprout when it gets a little warmer. I think I remember this from last year. I planted out my Bachelor's Buttons and Calendula yesterday in anticipation of a couple of inches of rain and overcast skies today and tomorrow. I have one BB plant that reseeded itself and it took two successive 22 degree nights with ice and snow last weekend without any damage whatsoever, so they are very cold hardy. Lupines are probably next. I'm hoping to get blooms before it gets too hot here (zone 7B). Other seedlings coming along: nigella, Sweet William, Honesty, Dara, poppies, feverfew.

Very nice! This is my first time growing bachelor buttons. I know they are cold hardy but this is great info that they can withstand such cold weather. I probably can plant them real soon. My columbine usually takes long and I typically have low germination 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’m surprised my calendula isn’t further along. Thanks for stopping by 😊

Ohh gosh, you're several weeks ahead of me. I still haven't done my ws containers yet hahahha this week 100%. Don't give up on the other containers, I did last year and ignored them, and they all ended up germinating! Ohhh nice seedlings. That always happens with snapdragons. My larkspur did nothing last year! Yay nice to see my seeds doing well, they feel like my babies hahha
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
Yup, those containers will likely sprout a little later but won't give up on them. The seeds you gave me are doing great so far. You should still have time to do winter sowing but I know you do quite a bit of indoor seedlings so from that regard you will be ahead of me.

I have to look for video about agastache as I’m trying those next year 2024. It was too warm here in Z5a, WI and think many rotted or froze out. Will need to put them in the shade to keep frozen this time. It’s so warm yet this year I see the chamomile I finally got going is sprouting like the poppies outside. Glad to see that they reseeded.

I don't think I'll ever have to plant chamomile again. It just came up all over the place. 😆 Not mad about it though 😉

Wow Monica great germination with your winter sowing. I feel like Charlie Brown (I got rocks in my trick or treat bag) I got nothing. I only did one Echinacea and no germination. I think I’m done. I’ve done better in doors and now I have them growing in the greenhouse. I’m so happy for you. I do have lettuce and spinach growing from my Roots and Refuge bag experiment so I will be doing that again.
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
Interesting that you don't have luck with winter sowing. Echinacea can be a bit tricky. When winter sowing echinacea they do need to be started outdoors in late January to give them enough cold stratification. Also echinacea for me has had a 50% germination rate with winter sowing. Last year I planted a fresh bag of 25 seeds and only 12 germinated and they took a while to get going. You do have a very nice greenhouse. If I had that available I would totally be using that. Lettuce and spinach is super cold hardy and have fast germination so I can see why that worked well. Happy growing my friend. ☺

Great update! I got no germination on my snaps. They were 2 year old seeds. So I just ordered some new ones this weekend. Hoping I still have time to get some going. My larkspur and Delphinium haven't germed either. I'm in zone 6 and started to wonder if they will. I will keep checking.

First year trying winter sowing and it didn't dawn on me they needed protection during the hard freeze a couple of weeks ago. I lost snap dragons, statice and strawflowers.😟 The batchelor buttons are okay and the larkspur has a few stems. Nothing from my cosmos or coneflower (my own harvested seeds). Luckily I've had good luck sowing snap dragons, cosmos and statice inside but nothing on the strawflowers. Definitely lessons learned. What do I do with all the soil that didn't germinate anything? Is it trash or can it be used for other plantings? Would you pour boiling water on it to be sure all seeds are dead? Congratulations, looks like you had a banner year!!
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
Oh, I’m so sorry 😞. What zone are you in? I wouldn’t give up just yet on any that didn’t germinate. I usually wait until May or June to call it quits on those that nothing came up. I usually use the potting soil of those that didn’t germinate at the bottom of my flower pots. Unless you are using the soil for seed starting I don’t see a need to pour boiling water.

I love your WS updates! This is my first year trying it. Do you fertilize them as you would when grown inside under lights?
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
Thank you so much, that is so nice to hear that you enjoy these updates. I have not fertilized them because I used potting mix in the containers so it should have enough fertilizer until I plant them in the garden. Hope that helps 😊.

Also, do perennial’s take longer? I am in 6b Kentucky
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
In some cases perennials can take longer but not always. Really depends on the plant as some just need a longer cold period and moisture to germinate.

Do you cut the bachelor buttons to thicken them?
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
This is my first year growing bachelor buttons but I have read that they should be pinched back when the plants are 4 to 6 inches tall. So I do plan on it maybe a couple of weeks after transplanting?

Can you have them in too much Sun?
@MonicaKatie
@MonicaKatie 2 года назад
Too much sun only becomes an issue when the weather starts to warm up above 70 degrees farenheit. At that time you would need to open the containers - but when you first open them you don't want them in full sun for too long. You will want to give them a day or two to acclimate in part sun once you open since they were protected a bit from wind and direct sun. For clear plastic containers, full sun can be an issue when it warms up as the plastic can be like a maginifying glass and fry the seedlings. If you are concerned I would recomment moving them to a location where it only gets about 6 hours or morning sun. The afternoon sun is very strong so would not recommend containers be placed in mid to late spring where it is getting blasted with hot afternoon sun.
