Hi friends!
Join Carissa and me for this video about winter jug seed sowing. Carissa’s passion and knowledge for this seed starting method is contagious!
Carissa is sowing perennials in this video and here’s the list of hardy annuals I am currently sowing:
Shirley Poppies
Hungarian Blue Poppies
Iceland Poppies
*Note about Poppies: they prefer to not have their roots disturbed so I plant the seedlings out in “clumps” when they are ready to be planted out.
Annual Phlox:
Phlox Mix
Moody Blues Phlox
Campanula
Champion Pro Lavendar
Annual Rudbeckia:
Maya
Sahara
Cherokee Sunset
Tribola

Will the extreme cold weather impact the winter sowing jugs? Temperatures during the next week will range from 9 degrees to -2 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yes, they should be just fine. It sounds like maybe you’re in a zone 5 (ish). I feel like the folks that are in somewhere in a place like a zone 3 would need to protect or start their jugs later but for us in zones 4 and warmer, they should do fine. It’s a good idea to nestle the jugs closely together for more protection. If you’re concerned, you could always cover the jugs with a frost cloth temporarily but I really don’t think that is necessary.
