standard kit when I was a kid was 1 or 2 blankets and enough candles for 24 hours a can to melt snow and a can to hold the candles, I think most will want 2 candles burning at once, energy rich snacks. this used to be on the TV Commercials. Sask Canada.

I lived in my van in a Minnesota winter when it was -27 degrees and sunny. The sun alone kept the inside temp around 40 degrees. I couldn't even see my breath. I worked the graveyard shift on purpose so that I slept while it was warm.

Alternate between solar and running the vehicle to extend your gasoline. Also, get some candles and build a couple candle heaters. Burn a candle for heat and save the gas.

When I was stationed in North Dakota many people who got in trouble were locals. I guess they thought nothing would happen to them. I'm from Texas and was afraid of the severe cold. I carried everything to survive with.

Good advice. When I lived in a remote cold area I didn't usually wear more than shoes and a light jacket, but I always kept a parka and winter boots among other things in the trunk of my car.

Don’t forget to put the reflective cover over the windshield at night - I have slept in my car on a night so cold that the washer fluid at the gas station turned into a solid block of ice. I had no idea how cold it was outside until I got up to pee and quickly closed the door and put on my jacket before getting out again 🥶. This wasn’t Canada cold but it was Illinois cold and reflective window covers an average Walmart sleeping bag + my body heat was enough to get a warm night sleep in freezing temperatures.

Painting the side of the window insulation facing the sun flat black is critical to retaining the sun's heat. Otherwise it's just reflected back into the atmosphere. Great advice for anyone living/traveling in extreme cold,,

My mom and Dad had seen enough bad weather growing up they made sure when we got our first cars that we were well prepared with basic tools, extra clothes and blankets for winter. Also some water and snacks. Didn’t know about the candle trick. Thank you!!!

Nate, I've been watching your channel for about a year now, and I'm ALWAYS impressed by the practicality of your ideas and info. Also, IMO, anyone who sports a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra simply speaking must be smart AND practical LOL, as either of them is my first choice for a truck as well! Practical, reliable and especially in regards to a Tacoma, the resale can NOT be beaten!

I keep a butane torch that uses one of those green camping cans like copper pipe fitters use for soldering in my truck. Provides a lot of emergency heat and is great for starting fires and doesn't need much space. Also handy for dabs and emergency marshmallow/hotdog cooker inside a vehicle.

I carry a bin full of gear in my Jeep. I always have water, snacks, flashlight, fire starting kit, hand warmers, a shovel, fire extinguisher, blankets, and extra gloves. There's more, but those are in my vehicle constantly. I live in Upstate NY and sometimes the highways close down because of too much snow...and folks have been known to get stranded.

This dude called the sun coming through a window "Passive Solar Heating" 😂
@nancyst.john-smith3891
@nancyst.john-smith3891 Год назад
And he is correct. Passive solar heating takes advantage of the sun’s rays, windows and other materials that can hold the suns shared warmth. Pointing the front window of the car toward the sun makes a solar collection device. The materials inside the vehicle become gray sinks and store the warmth, and the window coverings cut down on heat loss. It’s the definition of passive solar heating.

Can we install an edison generator and electric heater so that we have unlimited electric heat in the car? Remove the Tesla magnets from the armature magnets of the generator and the generator will spin like an Edison generator. Wire 12 volt 110 volt AC inverter for AC power house current AC and plug in the heater and electric motor and stove.
