Another amazing one in the bag. Amazing idea with the sausage, i thought you were going to use it as bait LOL. There's no way i would be out there for that long, i would be a living snowman by the time you left. Thank you sir !!!
Kenny, stop thinking your a weirdo...your NOT, and you can't worry about what people think of you talking to your camera etc..your videos are amazing and forget what people think..and i LOVED the cooking your sausage on the buddy heater. I'm a vegan but loved the idea. P.s. my husband and I bleed PURPLE. GO VIKES!!!! THANKS- LOVE the ice fishing too! 😁🥰
Thanks, and same to you guys! I'll get a few more ice fishing videos out this winter where I actually catch fish. I'll bring the portable out next time so I can stay on the ice longer. I'm already thinking about different camera angles I can get inside the house.
Kenny, wow, just came across your channel, just what I was looking for, great content. Ice fishing and winter camping in MN, doesn't get any better. From a new subscriber in Iowa. 👍
Adjust your choke cable, if that doesn’t work check your air filter for very dirty. Clean or replace, if still won’t start check fuel filter, replace if dirty. If this does not fix you need to call a gen mechanic. There is really not much else to check except your vacuum relief valve and low oil level which I doubt since it starts outside and you are playing with the carb. It may be your cable needs adjusting.
Most minnesotans are weird because we ice fish... lol 🤣😂🤣 For Minnesotans that think your weird, just tell them you are a RU-vid Celeb making videos for your fans!! 😎🤘🤩 I'm so jealous of you right now. Keep up the great work!! Check the connection to the choke/throttle. Seems like something is sticking closed till it heats up. Might just need to be cleaned or tightened up.
Spark arrestor will be an issue. Device has tiny holes that clog with use. Located in the throat of xhaust manifold where muffler bolts on. Acetone and wire brush can clean piece. Muffler will need blown out also
Choke? Could be time for a new carb? I bet those come pretty dear though. Good video as always......three fish in one episode.....things are looking up! Merry Christmas Adelle, Mandi Kenny....hope it's the best ever!
I believe some choke rods would get stuck when it's freezing and cold on those onan. May have to adjust and clean the choke and carb..possibly check that spring tension also. Love your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
No advice for your problem just similar issues. We are having Generator problems as well with our 1 year old Lance 960 with Onan 2500 (Propane). It started not shutting down using the inside panel. After a while nothing would work. At a Cummins service center they found a loose connection under the genny. Now the unit will work locally, but still will not shut down from the inside panel. Enjoying your videos. We are winter camping in -40 weather. So far so good but looking forward to less extreme cold. Steve
Comgratulations! Throughout all of your videos you finally caught a fish! You certainly have the gear. I've only went ice fishing once. It was on pelican lake in Minnesota. Being someone from Arkansas, I've never seen a lake freeze over, especially one you could drive a 14:29 truck and trailer on. My butt bit the seat. Our shelter was a personnel carrier off a deuce and a half army truck rigged up to go on and slide off a old boat trailer. The food was grilled dear sausage and fried potatoes. I caught 4 big crappie and 2 perch and I think our total among 2 others was 12. I was working out there. I love your videos. Being handicapped I still have the want to! Stay safe, be honest and stay kind!
Yes, darn perch. They get bigger in bigger waters. Out on Mille Lacs I will catch keeper Perch, they are excellent to eat. One day I'll catch something worth showing on camera.
Kenny another great video🎉 never been ice fishing but I would like to seems a little scary being on the lake of course I guess that’s because I’m from North Carolina that will never happen here on any lakes thanks again for the Awesome video really enjoy as always watching! You and your family have a Merry Christmas 🎉
Fred says to make a checklist. 😉 He tells me that all the time and he has one for everything. Interesting way to cook your lunch. Size doesn't mater. You caught some fish so a good day we would say.
Checklist would definitely help. The older I get the more forgetful I'm getting. I have a Wall mounted heater in the fish house. Same concept as the buddy heater. Many many venison polish sausages have been cooked atop that heater.
@@KennyOfAllTrades At least you are getting forgetful the older that you get. My kids tell me that I can't say that I am getting more forgetful as I get older since I have always been that way. Fred and I both love venison. Very resourceful use of your heater.
Replace the diaphragm in that carb they can get a bit stiff and remove and disassemble the carb giving it a good soak in carb cleaner overnight then blow out all the small little passages with light air pressure then reassemble and reinstall that will make a big difference .
Hey Kenny, you found yourself a nice spot, caught some fish and that was definitely a unique way to cook a sausage for sure. You sure got me itching for ice fishing. The way things are going right now, it might be the end of January before the lake freezes. Hope you get to go out again.
Kenny, you brought back a a lot of memories of my ice fishing days back in Wyoming, lake Hattie, Seminoe reservoir. Many ice fishing tournaments! The Vikings game was amazing! Keep up the good work!
Three things i can think of with the generator: 1. Is there a summer/winter setting on the carb? 2. Is there a spring that keeps "back pressure " on the throttle that is missing or damaged. It would accomplish basically what you are doing by manually pushing it. 3. Is that same assembly binding in any way so even if the spring is in place it can't move it.
I have t had a chance to look at it since I made the video. I think you are onto something with a missing spring. I'm going to be looking at thar. I did not find a winter/summer setting.
I definitely like the quotes in the beginning, another good one, too. I don't think ice fishing would be for me, that's too much cold. I've fished a couple of times and can see the attraction, but think I'd rather bank fish on a lake or river, or even surf fish, I sure wouldn't last long in the cold, LOL. Yep, gonna be some cold weather this week, you better get some gloves before you get frost bit! Have a great week, see ya next!
I work outside about 75% of the time. Today and It was brutal, -25 windchill. Thankfully my longest stint outside was 1.5 hours. It's possible to get accustomed to the cold....but after so many hours the chill goes to your bones. Ice fishing can be really fun when your catching fish. I prefer it to summer fishing. I appreciate your comments!
@@KennyOfAllTrades Wow, outside 75% of the time, not many jobs like that. I've a couple that did, worked as a Custom's Inspector for a few years and drove commercial trucks long haul, in both of these I was outside a lot. The inspector job was in San Diego, no biggie, but the driving was done in cold weather, not really for me at all, LOL!
I do vin, auto, and commercial vehicle work for the Department of Public Safety. Im outside a lot. Thankfully I time to check my phone throughout the day!
Another good video - your efforts keep growing the channel! Make sure your oil level is perfect on the Onan. Especially if you are parked off-level. I hope the upcoming storm doesn't cause you and your family issues.
Thanks. Looks like I'll be starting up my rat trap snow plow truck again. Last week's snow was like pushing cement. We got around 8 to 10 inches of wet heavy stuff. This round dosent look as heavy. Unfortunately the lakes are taking a beating. Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas!
I sure miss ice fishing. Those perch are good eats, congrats on finally pulling a few in. Look at your numbers grow! Awesome! Have a very merry and blessed Christmas!
I was Looking for pan fish. I usually put my house on this lake. It has nice crappies. I would usually stop and fish on my way home after work. The night bite is usually better.
Im gonna take another look into it now that the weather has warmed up. I'll definitely look closer at the throttle. I wish I could pull the carb off without having to remove the generator completely. Unfortunately, they stuffed 80 pounds of generator a 10 pound bag. Hopefully, it's just a linkage issue.
What a game. My Daughter was lucky enough to be there Sunday. She's not a huge fan but her boyfriend is. She said you could feel the electricity in the air!
Cool weekend trip. I was really hoping to see you catch some Crappie. They'll still be there later. The generator probably just needs a tuneup and the carb cleaned, sounds like the jets may be gummed up. Is it propane or gas/Diesel? Or, the choke may not be working. That's all I've got, just make sure the air filter is clean as well. Until next week, thanks for sharing. 👍🇺🇸🤠
Thanks Randy. Here's what I've done so far. Inspected the air filter. It looks good. I used an entire can of carb cleaner through the carb. I stalled it out a few times while spraying, I let the carb cleaner sit inside for awhile before starting back up. The spark plug is new. The unit has 200 hours on it, but it's 20 years old. I was hoping not to pull the generator out. I might have to though. It looks like I have to remove the cover to pull the carb. It's a propane powered generator.
@@KennyOfAllTrades yes it sounds like it'll have to come out to do more diagnostics on it. It's probably something pretty simple I'm sure. Definitely a good brand, and 20years old doesn't bother me at all, especially with that brand. Good luck, can't wait to hear what you find out. Today I almost burnt my garage up trying to start one of my old generators on ether. Glad I put it out, before my wife got home. 😂
Seems the choke may not be closing..thus not letting it start until it warms up. Also check the vent hose going to the diaphragm they tend to get clogged over time. Just a thought.
hello from the quiet Ozarks Kenny! Another video of value! its hot here so i m watching your video to cool! How did you install your battery tool charger in your back seat wall? enjoy your trip to visit your brother, tight lines and bent poles!
Thanks. I ran 2/0 cables from the batteries to the 1000-watt inverter. I have the wires fused before the inverter. I did not use a silinoid like I did for the camper. If I accidentally leave the inverter on, I could drain the truck batteries. It's been back there for the last 6 years. So far, it hasn't been an issue. I use it to charge my bike batteries, and I have a Milwaukee charger hanging beside it. I've also used a crock pot to cook meals on long road trips. It makes the truck smell amazing.
Hey for a guy with such advanced fishing gear you sure can’t catch much? 😂 jk I can maybe see ice fishing in that house you have!! That thing is awesome!!! Loved the video!! Loved those drone shots!! As for the generator I have an suggestion….mine wouldn’t start unless I manually pushed the throttle like you have to. Come to find out there’s a little servo motor that adjusts your throttle when you are choking the engine electronically that got dirty and wasn’t working properly. You might wanna check that if you haven’t already? I had to buy an entire new carb to replace that little motor.
We talk every other day, you couldn't mention the servo motor two weeks ago, back when it was 35 degrees out. It's going to be -30 tonight! lol If you make it up to Minnesota, I got a spot in the fish house for you. I made that from scraps when I remodeled the house!
The nice cold weather is making ice, but a foot of snow will slow that down. Looking like a snowmobile and a clam fish house will be more useful this winter. It will be hard to get the big fish houses out for awhile. Nice seeing you catching some fish, hope you get a big one someday 😊
Thanks! It's gonna happen, I can feel it! Your right the lakes are not gonna be great for some time. It's -12 right now. That will help. But all the snow will insulate the ice.
Have you heard of the ice report app? People report what the ice thickness is when they are out fishing and it shows everyone else the thickness and location on that date. Helps everyone know when it is safe to fish in that area. I have a nice ice fishing trailer that is more comfortable to catch "bottle bass" in than a portable, but we need the ice thicker. Hope you get a big one someday, I've been trying to get another big one to mount next to my 29" walleye for the last 20 years, someday 🙏 😁
I'll have to load that app. I had one a few years ago on an older phone. It may have been the same app. I was surprised how many people contributed to it. Thanks for the reminder. A 29 incher up on the wall is awesome!
I once had a guy tell me "Show me a man that likes ice fishing & I'll show you a man with a bad marriage." What do I know, no ice fishing going on here in Florida.
Kenny I had a spring that held tension on on the butterfly valve and I found one end of it had come off the plate on the butterfly. It is right there where you have to manually manipulate to get it to start outside. Same basic problem on my AF 990. Hope this helps.
I'll see if I can find a manual for that model. Your probably right, and Unfortunately I don't have good access to the back of the carb. I might have to pull tge unit out.
My hunch is the choke isn’t coming on automatically as it should, so I would look into the choke mechanism to see if it is stuck. See if wd40 helps, or perhaps something came loose. Curious to hear what works. Thanks again for another great video!
@roddunham1928 well.........its starting a little better with the warm weather. I changed out the filter and cleaned the carb with a spray. It still takes a while to crank over before it will start...but it does start from inside. My guess is this winter I'll be back to starting it outside and having to give it throttle while cranking.
We have been grounded this past year from RVing (due to family health issues) … we also sometimes have odd generator starting issues… for instance, if I recollect correctly, much of the time we have to turn on our microwave before our generator starts in our AF990… my guess is that it’s an electrical/voltage thing, but we haven’t spent much time yet figuring out what’s going on with it…(we just keep using that microwave hack since we usually don’t use the onboard generator all that much when we are camping … ) Also, your poor hands! (I don’t understand how your not frost bitten!) Was the drone footage captured in black and white, or was it just that bleak of color? Either way loved seeing that perspective! Ps - I think I could only handle an hour or so of ice fishing, especially if I wasn’t catching many fish; plus I’m more of a catch and release person, lol! Seasons greetings! Happy Holidays! 🎄☃️❄️🌨⛄️
Thanks, ill check to make sure all the loads are off before trying to start the generator. The drone does look black and white, that's wierd. Its just the way it happened, it was dark and gloomy earlier in the day. That might be why. But even on my way back it looks black and white. At the Mondsy -Friday job I'm working outside a lot, I think our bodies get accustomed to the cold. Or the nevrve ending are damaged from all the frost bite. Lol
@@KennyOfAllTrades My husband says it’s not our generator that is the issue, it’s our microwave… I’m pretty sure I also have had issues with the generator starting as well… and hard to test that as the AF has been plugged in currently plus it’s 19 degrees out before any wind chill… but… i just wanted to update my post, noting my husbands recollections, lol… he obviously thinks I’m an airhead about this topic… either way I do have an issue with starting at least the microwave - and the actual hack also includes turning on the toaster oven first, in order to get the microwave to turn on… I still pretty sure I recall issues at times with the generator starting too as well ;) … but I guess I will agree to disagree with him on that until we can test it out again when we have been unplugged for a bit and moderate temps, lol…
I assume the camper is winterized or at least drained of water. So I am courious how much water do you carry by container ? Grey water , black water? I'm new to truck campers and looking for advice on cold weather camoing.
I did drain the fresh water. I only go out for weekend adventures so a couple of gallons of water is plenty. I will on occasion pour gray water in the holding tank, I chase it down with RV antifreeze and drain it when I get home. I try to not leave any water in the holding tanks over the week. I don't keep the heat on Monday through Friday. Since I only do overnighters, or two nights, I don't use the camper shower during the winter. For #2 I use a bag in the toilet, I also have a portable folding toilet that I will use.
Yay…fishies 🐠 🐟 🎣 I bet ya woulda hooked a doozy of a fish on the live bait you bought but didn’t use 🤔 😂 Catch ‘n grill on the ice next time? Best make sure you pack another sausage 😊 As always, thank you for sharing your weekend with us…is it next Tuesday yet?! P.S. I KNOW there are real fish in MN lakes! Do you follow MAV? He’s from I believe the Duluth area. Well after your vid, watched his recent ice fishing vid…caught him some walleye’s. So yep, there’s fish in MN ahright 😉
Yep I watch him. I haven't watched his new video yet. I saw he was on Red Lake so I figured he cought walleye. We don't live real far apart. I'm around his neck of the woods often. Remember the videos where my daughter went camping with me....she was keeping an eye out for his truck. I like his channel, he seems like a down to earth approachable person.
@@KennyOfAllTrades yeah, he seems like a good down to earth kid, parents raised him well. And yeah, I do remember the vids with your daughter, too funny she was keeping her eyes out for him. I enjoy his channel a lot, loved his trip to/from Alaska as well as the one he took to the east coast of Canada.
@@KennyOfAllTrades I hear ya on being young again. I’m just glad smartphones and YT weren’t for the best days of my life! Lol. Although my 13 years of being a ski bum through the 90’s and into 2000 would’ve made some awesome YT content. He has created a virtual empire on YT, boy has over 2.2 million subs…done well for himself…huge kudos to him!
That's what I was thinking. So I sprayed the heck out each hose with carb cleaner hoping the motor would bogg down. Thst way I could pin point the cracked hose sucking air....it didn't stumble a bit. Same for the carb base gasket. Maybe I'll use my propane touch ( not lite of course) to introduce fuel by the lines. That should increase the rpms if a hose is cracked. Does my thinking sound right? I could be missing something.
@@KennyOfAllTrades what worked for me. carb cleaner increased rpm. replaced old hoses and runs great. had the same issues, would not start from the inside control panel, only would start from the outside switch while messing with the throttle. hope you get it figured out, maybe some corrosion inside the carb/ mixer from old propane? that was part of my problem as well.
Man…GoPro batteries are so terrible in the cold. Went snowmobiling last weekend and temps were around 5-10 F. They wouldn’t even last 2 minutes. Fully charged and kept warm in my breast pocket. So frustrating cause it would’ve been some great footage! So much snow in the mountains right now already. 7 feet or so
That's crazy snow. We will have a couple feet of fresh new snow by the end of the week. We got hit with two events lasting couple days each. I'm worried the forestry roads will only be accessible by snowmobile. It may change my camping style going forward, atleast the next few months. We won't see any thawing now untill March or April. Why do I live here?
I might have to find someone to help me. I'm not sure the electric choke is working. I'll see if one of the kids will hold down the choke button inside so I can see what's going on outside. Thanks for the advice.
@@KennyOfAllTrades I've never had anything to do with working on propane fueled engines, that would be a whole different animal then diagnosing fuel issues with a gas engine. I wondered when I saw some comments about a choke malfunction or carb plugging issues. For sure would have to either get some feedback from those familiar with the propane system faults an engine like this can ( and is ) having or have a chat with a shop that deals in repairs for small propane gen sets. Its struggling to get a rich enough fuel mixture to start a cold engine, otherwise as you pointed out it starts and runs fine when its warmed up. On the topic of both generators, it probably wouldn't hurt to run a thinner oil such as either 5w-30 or 0w-30 synthetic if you can get it as every bit helps to get them started. Also using a little sea foam once in a while in your gas generator to keep the internals of the carb clean ( and use non ethanol premium in the gas gen set, this ethanol fuel is bad news on small engines, certainly engines that don't get run often )
@@KennyOfAllTrades I did a little searching and found similar hard start issues on an RV forum, the choke spring not operating the choke properly is one item, another is if that breather hose is plugged, still another that they may not mention on that forum is an adjustment on the diaphragm that opens to allow propane into the system with vacuum of cranking the engine over ( that can be fiddled with and set too light though and allow propane to flow through when the engine is off and certainly don't want that ) , and then the regulator system on the camper itself if that is limiting. That is the gist of items I happened to come across. Watch the video just part way down on this forum link and compare how your choke is reacting when you fiddle with the shaft as if his went wonky, very possible you could have an issue with your spring tension setting also ( not to get your hopes up too much though ! ) . As you can see if he cracked the throttle open by hand like you are doing as he explained, it would start up, before he discovered the choke spring issue. Your breather hose may have a filter on it, something to check out anyway. Read all the comments and that video and see if something jumps out at you. www.rvforum.net/threads/onan-2500-lp-generator-not-starting.137887/
