The hot water bottle can be used in REVERSE also, if the weather is too hot! To really warm up or cool down your body, place a bottle on your femoral artery which is on the inside of your upper thigh. Your blood heats or cools down in about 10 minutes. One bottle goes at my feet and the other beside me just above my hip and ribs, once I am warm or cooled down. God Bless your channel Bob!

For those with microwaves in their rigs, I have a couple fleece bags filled with rice ( dried corn works also) that I microwave for 4 minutes. They stay warm for hours. One is a long tube to hang around my neck. The other is rectangular and I tuck it under my blanket. The tube is especially nice when I am still up and about in the evening. It is amazing how much warmer I feel with that on my neck and shoulders.

Harbour freight has a 40"×72" wool moving blankets in sale for $7.99. I use it in between a fleece blanket on top and a flannel sheet on bottom. It is super warm. And a fleece hooded snuggy while sitting up before bedtime.

Some great advice! I'll add an alternative to hot water bottles for sleeping. I suffer from Raynaud's symptoms which means that my hands and feet are constantly cold. Because of this I've been using rechargeable, battery powered handwarmers in my bedding for years now with great success. The big advantage over water bottles is that they can be turned on an off when needed to adjust your comfort level, plus they are recharged easily from a USB during the day.

Any advice regarding where to get the rechargeable hand warmers? I have a cold feet problem at night. I like wool but I can’t wear sheep’s wool next to my skin. It makes me itch and scratch. Possibly Merino wool would work better - is that from goats?

Thank you for producing this video series. I don't live full time in a vehicle, but I travel and backpack. Wool blankets cannot be beat for warmth in all conditions. The new continuous hollow fiber down alternative are almost as light as down now. Amana Woollen Mills, still make wool and cotton blankets and throws. They are pricey but quality. Wool and cotton are natural fibers too. Amana Iowa is just north of I-80 , in eastern Iowa. It is worth a visit. Pendleton in the PNW is the other Woollen mill still in operation in the USA. We have had a twin sized wool blanket from them for over 10 years and it still looks new. Buy quality if you can afford it and you will get years of service from your items. Thank you again for this video series. You are a great teacher.

I have a heated sleeping pad (meant for truckers) that runs off a 9v cigarette lighter. Have it on the lowest setting w/ a wool blanket below me, wool bkanket on top, down sleeping bag for top of that. I am toatsy! Plugs into my yeti 500x goal zero solar. Very energy efficient. You mentioned a “candle going” which I agree is a great idea. Just a note to “car dwellers/suv dwellers”- obvious issue is burning something or setting something on fire. But the real issue is that FIRE NEEDS AIR and uses oxygen to burn. So the fire uses air YOU NEED to breathe and stay alive. Just an additional idea for folks. (FYI, I’m an outdoor educator, by trade.) Great WOOL BLANKET idea. Wool socks, sweaters, scarves, anything you can find that is at least mostly wool? Is superior to fleece or any other material, for sleep or staying warm while sitting around.

I’m not big on candles to begin with but the thought of putting a candle in a small space such as a van or any thing smaller is scary to me. So to those that might want to use a candle please look at the safest method possible and I do not know what that is. Stay safe out there and warm we are pretty cold here in Wisconsin right now and have some snow on the ground.

In the winter, Costco often has sheepskin rugs, made out of four skins sewn together, so they are quite large. I've seen them between $99 and $119. They are amazing to keep warm under when you're sitting around or sleeping. They are a bit bulky, but when not needed make a great cushion layer on the bed or "couch". Combined with a hot water bottle, you are getting and staying pretty dang warm.

I just got myself a treat for myself at Christmas time and I bought a new Swiss wool blanket and a sleeping bag. Now I just need one of your hot water bottles. I like the clever idea using what looks like a sweater turtleneck so I probably will just use one of my old turtleneck sweaters that already have wool and stick the hot water bottle in it mainly to save money that I don’t have..even better would be to find someone who knows how to sew and have them reuse one of my old coats and take out the zipper to sew it around the top. Otherwise it’s back to Amazon to one of your links. Especially if you live in cold climate or off grid.

If you own a pair of insulated welders gloves, heating up large rocks on a fire and then putting them in your tent, vehicle, or RV is a great, and safe way to keep warm. Large stones retain and radiate their heat for a long time. Another great option (if you can afford it) is a packable Primal-Loft or Micro-Therm jacket from Patagonia or Eddie Bauer, that you can easily sleep in. They weigh almost nothing, and pack down to the size of a 12" softball, but cost around $200.

My feet are the hardest part of me to keep warm. I shopped for electric socks on Amazon. Thick almost knee high socks with a rechargeable battery pack in a snap pouch on each that is about the size of two 9V batteries. Low, medium and high settings. When shopping, pay attention to the battery capacity rating so it has the ability to last all night, or most of the day. Game changer!

One could spray paint the large bottle flat black or simply place in a flat black tight fitting bag and hang outside in the sun. It will heat up the water using solar so you save fuel. Of course, if it is cloudy and windy and very cold outside, this will not work as well if at all.

We've been traveling from Portland, Maine, since Oct. in our Ram Promaster. We've tried to stay south of the snow line and were successful until we got to Mohave, CA, in December. On cold nights, quite honestly, what saved us was our efficient electric blanket which worked off our GoalZero power station. It draws surprisingly little power and with variable power controls and a variable shut-off setting (1 to several hours), there was no problem getting it to shut-off automatically. Can't say enough about that option.

I struggled keeping a hat on my head so I use a polar fleece bathrobe to drape over my head and around my face and hang down and around my shoulders and down my back. Deliciously warm. My wool blankets come from the thrift stores as well as wool sweaters. I buy extra large or mens because my body heat between me and the sweater warms that air. If you’re in a rig with a stove, I put a pot of water on so in the morning I can reach over and boil the water while I laze around til it’s time to add the oatmeal. Add some flax seed towards the end of the cooking and make going number 2 fast and easy!

The same items listed here that are used to keep ourselves warm can do the same for water and products. Especially if kept in an insulated container or "cooler" and then you can add in warm water bottles or extra layers of insulation etc. We usually want most goods kept pretty cold so that they last longer, so I don't think that I would worry too much about them freezing, as long as you can heat them before eating.

I really like this long water bottle, cuz it keeps my whole body warm, as it extends my whole core body length. Definitely get the rubber, cuz the others don’t last and you end up having to buy a replacement sooner rather than later. I wear great wool socks at night and I can always move the bottle is I need a bit of heat further down my body. Another “heater” I enjoy is … my dog! Ha! He shares his heat and I share mine, so we really stay fairly warm, together. So we have the longish hot water bottle, I have one of the puffy blankets, my socks and my dog. Even when it’s in the 30s outside, we stay quite toasty.

We had the surplus army wool blankets when I was a kid. I found a really nice Biederlack blanket from a thrift store. It is warm just by itself but layered with another blanket, it's really nice.

Bob channeling the wisdom of HDR (RIP). WOOL blankets also last forever, so as HDR always advised, Buy Once Cry Once.

Wonderful video, Bob. I really like the extra long water bottle. In Europe, folks there use infrared light bulb ($25). Basically, radiate the body warm enough to sleep all night without freezing to death. I usually radiate the face, chest, stomach and arms 30 minutes and sleep very good

I'm allergic to wool, so I'd somehow source superwash wool, alpaca (which I'm still slightly sensitive to), or bison down for socks, blankets, shawl, etc. I'd have to look into how they compare to wool WRT warmth and how they handle moisture.
@spooniesarah
@spooniesarah 2 года назад
@@patriciacole8773 I've heard great things about bison down, but alpaca would be cheaper. Maybe the blanket should be alpaca, and smaller things could be superwash wool or bison. Or if I already have enough superwash wool yarn I could make my own blanket.

Bob, please make a video educating us on the dangers and proper use of candles for heat. There are other you tube videos about using certain casings, etc to increase the btus, but we need to hear from the expert about how to handle it and do it properly.

4:53 Insensible water loss: Roughly half is from your respiratory tract and the other half is from your skin. A person loses 7 to 10 ‘% of their body heat through their head on average.

I wonder if those skiing hand warmers would work inside of a sleeping bag? They are only about 40 cents each (on Amazon - box of 80 for $30) and there's even rechargeable electronic ones for $25 each. They claim to last up to 8 hours... more than long enough for a good night's sleep. If you put two or three in your sleeping bag, it may do the trick. Maybe?

I would like to know more about winter van life in Alaska, great areas to stay , keeping water supply warm, wood burner in a van. Electrical items in the cold. What is most needed to survive winter in a van. Food source, canned food freezes, crossing Canada to get to Alaska boarder do and don't s. Buying land in Alaska. Some say do not fully insulated, bc of mildew build up. Do these bluetti, eco flows, jackeries work well in the cold of Alaska ? will the solar work? Do vehicle fluids freeze? Which tire chains are good for a van in Alaska. My van has no heater. I am 62 on October 2nd and this has been my dream for over 10 years. My heart is pounding with such Joy and excitement for this journey. Any advice will be so gratefully appreciated, Ty. ✌️🙏❤️🕯️🎈💯🌻😊
