What a beautiful painting. I find that creating and maintaining values are the hardest part of watercolor for me as a beginner. It is so easy to create a flat painting that is lifeless. Watching these videos definitely help. I am thankful for all your videos.

I HAD AN UNCLE WHO ILLUSTRATED FOR A NEW ORLEANS PAPER. THE TIMES PICAYUNE. IT WAS THE DIXIE MAGAZINE INSERT ON SUNDAY'S PAPER. BACK IN THE 1950-60S. I WAS A BABY BOY BACK THEN BUT I LOVED ART. HE WOULD COMPOSE CIVIL WAR BATTLES IN PEN AND WASH. I LOOKED FORWARD TO SEEING EVERY SUNDAY PAPER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE OF ART AND FOR HELPING PEOPLE TO GET A CLUE HOW TO PAINT. FOR SOME REASON NOT EVERYBODY CAN DO IT. BUT WITH YOUR HELP THEY CAN TREY.

Once again you amaze me and inspire me Steve! Great subject and excellent attention to detail. " dead" leaves that remain on deciduous trees are there for a reason: the tree uses them throughout the winter as a source of sugar and help grow new buds for the springtime growth. Beech trees are a great example of that. Evergreens do the same with their needles in late spring into the summer to set their new bud growth. Their used needles fall in early autumn/early winter depending on the species and location. After the leaves and needles fall they transform into fertilizers for the next season, so they never really die, they only transform. Thank you for sharing your talents with us Steve. I love watching you paint and "transform" weekly!🙂🙏👍❤ Nature never hurries, yet everything gets done.

I can relate to your experience, I was out walking one day through my town of Grand Rapids MN, an Winter was coming toward the end ! There was snow along the curb of the sidewalk, and snow had been cleared a day or so earlier. My eyes spotted part of an old Oak leaf laying on the snow pile, not quire covered fully. carefully was able to get this old leaf out of the snow an I started to take a closer look at the beauty of the leaf! I stared seeing the different colors of browns just on that leaf, as I was walking home. Then, the next challenge was to use my Artist Quality Color pencils and to draw this leaf! All I could do was ask God for His help & guidance. An as your Verse you chose to use to day from Phil. 4. Sure did fit for today an always ! By the way, I titled the drawing " Surprise by Beauty." Thanks again for all you are able to teach those of us whom want to grow in the skill of watercolor an enjoy lesson too! Lord Bless, Donna

Hi Steve.. excellent 👌. I had never seen you doing loose watercolour painting. Do you like loose watercolour painting? I always saw you doing realistic Painting. Please comment on why you don't like loose watercolour painting. Do you think loose watercolour painting is tough than realism? Is it really an advanced technique?
@mindofwatercolor

I have done loose painting. Several actually. Style is a preference. No other explanation is needed. Advance technique can apply to either loose or tight.

@@mindofwatercolor thanks for your reply...actually im little tight in my work...but use to feel that only loose painting is advanced ...like many loose watercolorists are famous not the realistic painters. Its reassuring from you.😊

Steve, I really enjoyed this video. The only thing I would like to see is the reference photo along side the work in progress. It would help me see everything that you are looking at. As "simple" as this painting was, how long did you actually spend painting from the start of the sketch to the end of painting. I haven't seen much of starting with the watercolor pencils for the base and think it works very well. Thank you so much for sharing! You are very good at breaking down the steps.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 2 года назад
Thanks Eileen and I understand. Showing reference side by side is not something I do as a rule because I don't copy reference verbatim and depart from it often. I feel the techniques I'm using are what's most important. I will be sharing the reference photo on Patreon though. I spent about 3 hours all total I would say.

I almost skipped this one. I thought to myself that I seldom do botanicals so why bother. Very glad I stopped to watch. Really amazing how you made that dead leaf ‘come to life’! The more I watched the more it seemed to be a real leaf you just dropped in front of the camera. Your attention to detail, especially every little part of the leaf, seemed almost effortless. I need to try this one more time. We still have enough dead, twisted, and broken leaves laying around so I will have many candidates as models. Must hurry however. These Oklahoma winds are hell bent on blowing anything loose out of here and on to Kansas. To get the pigment, did you wet your brush and then rubbed it over a particular watercolor pencil, or did you just activate the pencil pigment already laid down onto your paper, or did you scrape watercolor pencil lead onto a mixing palette and then add water? Just curious.
@vanessap9124
@vanessap9124 Год назад
Steve, I might have missed this instruction, but are you allowing each wash to dry? I just heard the answer to my question….Dry brushing. I am going to see if you have a video on dry brushing.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor Год назад
There is really no set procedure. In general, as I get more detailed the washes become dryer. I don't necessarily wait for every wash to dry, especially if I want to add soft color or shading. But, if I need to layer another color on top of a wash I will. It's all conditional and there are several routes to the same result.
@vanessap9124
@vanessap9124 Год назад
@@mindofwatercolor I am finding that there are many ways to get the same results. But one thing that is a must just like you said to your practice your washes. When you master these techniques you become comfortable painting….you then master a process that gives you confidence painting by building your knowledge of the mind of watercolor. I am a nurse I am just in awe of watercolor. I found it at one of the lowest points of my life. Boy, I am glad I did. Thank you for once again sharing your knowledge.

Hey Steve, how has it been? Trust the family are well? How long does it take to make a more realistic painting? I am currently in art class and I found myself lost in adding details. Does ever happen to you? By the way I live in a tropical country and some of trees you are referring to I have never heard of🤗
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 2 года назад
Doing well, thank you Dawn. This took around 3 hours total I would guess. Yes, getting lost in detail is easy to do. I try to stop when it doesn't seem to be adding anything significant to the painting. It is fun though! Oak trees are plentiful here. We have a lot of hardwoods where I live (South Carolina). Hickory, Maple, Dogwood and others. All beautiful colors in the fall.
@MadebyDawn23
@MadebyDawn23 2 года назад
@@mindofwatercolor thank you for your reply. We have oak trees, and I heard of hardwood and maple before, but I cant Imagine what a dogwood looks like I will def Google it. I no longer like working on a completely flat surface and I got a table easel that let's you adjust the angle at which your paper or canvas will be and I"m not sure which setting would be best for watercolor.
