This winter, after several days in the photography blind, I finally captured video and stills of a beautiful Northern River Otter near Algonquin Park, Canada. What a treat it was to witness one of my favorite animals...the ever-playful otter; preeening and rolling in the snow. Moments like this make me glad to be alive and have a camera in my hands to share this experience with you .
In this video I recount my experience and provide the viewer with tips on how to locate, set up and capture great images of wildlife.

Thanks Missy, I think it might’ve been too much talking and walking before the otter came in.

Hi Geoff, glad you enjoyed it. I actually put four days in. And only one day the otter showed up. Definitely a tough critter to photograph unless you just luck out and find one somewhere.

That’s great to hear. If you can think of any content you would like I might be able to produce some thing here this winter. Tomorrow I am working on winter photography tips. Keeping my fingers crossed I can get it out next Saturday. Thanks for the positive feedback.

@@michaelbertelsenphotography Winter photography tips sounds great! I love moose and would like to photograph them. Not much luck so far this winter - any additional videos you make on moose would be fantastic.

@@cameronnawalaniec7499 I should have a moose video for you in a couple of weeks maybe even next weekend if I can find the time. Until then stay safe.

During winter I wonder other then wolfs if anything else would be a threat to them?
@michaelbertelsenphotography
@michaelbertelsenphotography 3 года назад
There are pretty big animals, I don’t even think a fox with full around with those guys. I think you’re right only a wolf would take them but apparently pollution is an issue as well. I’ve been reading a bit about them.

If I found a group of otters in a certain spot of a lake a few days ago, how long might they spend in a single area? Thinking about how quickly they exhaust their food source. I'm just curious because I hope to go see them tomorrow and it has now been about two weeks that they've been there. This particular part of the lake has a small area that is not frozen yet which is why they are fishing there.
@michaelbertelsenphotography
I have seen otter spend as little as two days in one spot. And then move on. There is no set time but if you see slush on the ice or in the snow then that means there is still activity. My recommendation is to go as soon as possible. Good luck

Thank you, I actually had four days in on the blind. I was hoping to get more content as far as video goes but it is so hard to pattern the otters.
