Great review as always RedKite. Despite the push buttons feeling like they came off an 80s calculator, it’s hard to find fault with the Top Gun MIP. With the extra MFD buttons, and the addition of the Take Off and Combat panels, you can pretty much fly without a mouse. It’s a real game changer. Well done WinWing.

It's so nice not needing a mouse for 99% of your flying. Still need to figure out a solution for the keyboard for radio comms with AI though!
@CrashEd1664

@@RedKiteRender it’s great isn’t it! Yes I’d love to get rid of the keyboard too. I have a small Streamdeck that I use for comms. I think there are some 3rd party apps that allow you to map the F keys to controller buttons, but I haven’t tried them yet. I have plenty of spares on the MFDs so this could be a good solution. Thanks again RK, keep up the great videos mate 👍

@RedKite I use DWVAC (Voice Activated Commands), but I hear Voice Attack works just as well. It's amazing just using a PTT button that you hold down, then say a command, and the comms happen automatically. You can set the phrase the software will recognize and also set the actions to take, e.g. F1, then F2, then F5. Or you can just say the commands, i.e. F1, F2, F5. Makes it completely hands-free for me.

@@richardcoleman1863 I use VA for general commands, but it's probably about time i added generic radio 1 / 2 selection and f1 commands to my profile!

Made the framework myself using the winwing online construction guide. It was extra rewarding that way and about €100 cheaper. Winwing now have an Australian, Canadian and European store aswell so no more problems with taxes and shipping. The mfd goes for €52 each and the ufc for €182. No extra costs. I just love it. Since I fly vr i just gotta find a good way to line up my virtual hands with my real ones so things align better. Any tips are welcome! For anyone wondering, the generic name for the rail mounts is called 80/20. (Sometimes just called t-slotted rails of your buying off of McMaster.) There's a bunch of different sites that sell their own variety of them in multiple styles. The stuff isn't necessarily cheap, but I can guarantee it's cheaper than buying pre-cut kits advertized as being specifically for joysticks and the like. The one thing you'll need if your buying the longer stock rails, however, is a bandsaw. That's the easier method imo. Aluminum is super soft though, so something like a tablesaw or similar should also work just fine without having to buy any special blades, provided you're not frequently cutting aluminum.
@CanadianTexaninLiguria
@CanadianTexaninLiguria Год назад
Actually 80/20 is a brand name in USA for T-slot aluminum. There are many others in US and Europe. A sliding chop saw is the preferred method of cutting with a aluminum blade (not steel or wood).
@KennyTheB
@KennyTheB Год назад
@@CanadianTexaninLiguria Yea, in my experience it's brand dilution, much like bandaids. Everyone that I've interacted with in industry just calls it 80/20 regardless of source. With a lot of industrial suppliers, their iteration of it will pop up in a search if you call it that.

If I manually progress to step 4 - where you select the screens.. The MFDs are not present.. Only my triple screen monitors are available. When using the sim app pro under "MFDs.. So you can use TM or even the mouse with the UFC. What i mean is a lot of what you do with the UFC requires inputs from the MFDs to enable, like laser code or starting co-ordinate entry. So without physical MFDs to go with the UFC, you'll be reaching for the mouse anyway, and once you're already there, it's easier to just use the mouse for the ufc too.

@@RedKiteRender Just to add a little further clarity, the Cougar MFDs would totally work with the WinWing UFC, as they are just buttons that are mapped in DCS. In my experience on my own home built cockpit however the lack of viable hand tracking or even better, affordable mixed reality headset, operating UFC and MFD's is just not satisfying or effective. Yes you CAN perhaps manage to some extend with tactile markers pasted on buttons but still takes to long to get to the correct button by touch only. A lot of us already have (expensive) sim gear. I asked Winwing if they thought about compatibility with Monstertech or Virpil or another brand who also have a center desk mount for the joystick. Their reaction: "we recommend WinWing products". I understand the reaction a little, but their market is the serious simmer. You would expect them to make sure their product also services VKB, thustmaster or Virpil users?
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender Год назад
It's not a terribly surprising outlook. The units can mount to generic aluminium tracks, which i think mostertech mounts should be compatible with them (double check the measurements though!) And their hotas use the same mounting points as a TM warthog set. So, whilst things are not compatible with them, they're compatible with others to a degree. In an ideal world everyone would be openly interconnecting but protectionism / anti-competition can get in the way.

@@RedKiteRender true... but a man can hope. If their center console were to be attached to monstertecht, virpil and other mounts with an adapter, it would boost their sales significantly. I think few of us would replace $1000+ sim gear (with all the effort to make it work exactly as we want) because we also want the Main Instrument Panel. From a product management point of view (yes, I was one), opening the market significantly by creating 2-3 adapters would be the way to go.

They have a VR version which essentially is everything you see, but no screens. I currently am setting that version up right now. Biggest issue I am running into is the poor decision on Winwing's part to mount it exactly where my joystick mount goes. I am running fox mounts instead of monsterteck which means the aluminum extrusion material is too thin to mount panels. This means I am going to have to design a custom desktop mounting solution that allows for both my foxx mounts and the MIP. I will say the panels themselves are absolutely awesome, but the headache of mounting this defiantly leaves a lot to be desired. I have found that I have mounting issues with almost all of my Winwing products. I mean the units themselves are S tier, but then they only provide you with really crappy ways of mounting them.

You mentioned something about some DDI controls are tied to the UFC or the other way around. Can the UFC be used with the standard TM Cougars? Looked to me like you were doing a majority of the UFC functions right on the UFC or am I missing something?
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender Год назад
So you can use TM or even the mouse with the UFC, What i mean is a lot of what you do with the UFC requires inputs from the MFDs to enable, like laser code or starting co-ordinate entry. So without physical MFDs to go with the UFC, you'll be reaching for the mouse anyway, and once you're already there, it's easier to just use the mouse for the ufc too.

If you setup the panels for the hornet using simapp pro, then jump in the a-10, everything will work. The lua file is just generic and outputs the MFD (Left, right, center) and that naming convention is shared across multiple airframes. Worked on the radar page for the F-15 as well with no lua editing.

Yeah, not much you can do to avoid it, Short of taping them all together. I'd say perhaps a small usb hub on the setup, giving one cable to your pc, but, it needs a good mains powered one to supply the screens. So it's a pain what ever you do. Making a permanent setup preferable.

Hi! I see you were using all the cockpit in a table. Was it comfortable to have all of that in front of you? Was it blocking your view to the monitor? Also It seems your monitor it's a 24" or so and it seems you are really far away from it, so I was wondering you you had any problem identifying planes far away or something like that
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender Год назад
28" main 17" outriggers. I've not had any issues with visibility, the shelf the montiors sits on is mobile, so i draw them close when playing, push them back when working as a desk. Didn't have any problems with the monitors being blocked either. (in fact normally there will be a microphone on top of the ufc as well!) But of course it'll come down to how your own setup is arranged. If my monitors were not raised with the shelf, yes, i could see the UFC getting in the way a little. Setup as whole is comfortable aside from the off centre joystick position, which ideally should be centred with the ufc.

Shouldn't be any software conflict, however it might be a power supply issue. I'd always recommend you have your gear on an externally powered USB hub, USB can be a bit fickle otherwise.

Anzac 5 seconds ago Hi Redkite. Thank you for this. I have my MPI all set up. And working fine. But one really annoying issue that seems to involve how Win 11 handles attached USB monitors. I set up the orientation (portrait) and placement of the 3 USB DDI screens in the Display Settings in relation to the main screen I’m using (LG 48 Ultragear 4K gaming monitor), apply it, synch in the SinApp Pro dashboard, and activate the DDIs. All good. BUT every time I restart the computer, it changes the display settings of my USB monitors, changing them back to landscape and placing them alongside my main monitor, not underneath it where I arranged it. In short, Win 11 Display Settings will NOT remember the previous display arrangements. Every time I start the computer, I must rearrange this USB monitors again. Extremely annoy8 g and I cannot find a solution on the web. Did you also have this problem? Any idea on how to fix? Thank you.

I've not come across that issue, however i am on Windows 10. It remembered positions just fine, even if you add or remove the display whilst on the desktop. Sounds like an issue with 11, I'd suggest asking microsoft support.

I just want to share my experience with this company. I have spent at least 40 hours disassembling, repairing, replacing parts and putting back the product again after spending months battling with customer service. I received a product that was not working properly in may 2022, and now after 8 months they let me know that it will actually break company policy to replace the faulty product. Any faulty product. So yes, I agree the products they deliver are decent value, and we need/want these kinds of products to support our flight sim hobby, but just be aware that if anything is wrong with the product, you could end up having to spend months waiting for parts sent from China, chat with customer service that can barely speak english, having to create video of what's wrong with the hardware and send to them, and then having to fix everything yourself. I am still waiting for them to send me a new circuit board for the Orion 2 throttle base that I will have to replace myself, and it's been 8 months of back and forth.

If you're in the UK that'll be 20% (Vat) plus any 'service' charges that the delivery company decides to inflict on you for importing. Which shouldn't be much. Rules might be different for particularly expensive things though, I'd suggest looking it up before ordering.
