Phantom Edition is a source port of the original WipeOut, giving players, among various options, the ability to switch between 3 different collision types: default is modern from BallisticNG, similar to Wipeout 3, classic is used in the Saturn and PC conversions of the first game and 2097/XL, finally legacy is the original collisions model - which doesn't allow scraping, making the game much harder.

i like Legacy Collisions. this is how it should be played. the only thing that could be changed is to extend the geometry

The evolution of Wipeout and the introduction of scraping reminds me of other game series: the double barrel shotgun in Doom, the spindash in Sonic. Items, moves and features usually associated with a franchise but not introduced in the first game. Like Wipeout 1 with modern collisions and scraping, playing Doom 1 with a double barrel or Sonic 1 with a spindash is not exactly like it was intended and will make progress much easier. I think scraping is a good idea and I don't like very much legacy collisions, I am glad the more modern games focused on making crazier tracks, but as you said, the original game was developed with the legacy system in mind, classic collisions from XL/2097 make things already much easier.

@@BlascoDeBlaschis couldn't agree more... the collisions were hella annoying and actually unrealistic considering the shapes of the craft and the angle your hitting the wall and visually it looked like you weren't even close enough yet you'd always still hit it and it kept you from pushing the track limits ...WipeoutXL was perfect because you could get within a pixel of the wall and see sparks .1 of a degree off and you crash ... but I also think the newer Wipeout games and even BallisticNG has made these games way too forgiving - I actually want scrapping but I also want a sudden death mode where a head-on collision would literally blow the the ship instantly.
