I've been surfing my entire life, and did ocean rescue, and I still cannot fathom how anyone can hold their breath under those conditions. Not the time length, but the sheer punch power of the wave. Or in this case, five waves. Insane. And an excellent rescue!
Really good to see how the saftey chain works and the preparation. It needs a lot of training to take that beating, and the jetskies came in quickly. You could see they know their spot well, there was a docu about Steudtner and they talked a lot about the saftey system. These guys are absolute professionals. Great job!
I could not imaging what goes through the mind of someone taking that many massive hits after such a huge wipeout. Hard to watch. Prayers out to you bro. So glad jet ski rescue was doubled up.
Very close to a five or six wave hold down. It almost looked like he was in for a beat down even if he would have made it. Looked like the wave really started to lose its shoulder quickly and there was not much more more distance to gain. Yes, he might’ve been picked up by the ski but going on the first wave of the set looks like it was going to have its consequences regardless. Can’t even fathom how gnarly it must’ve been to go through all that. Great rescue team, super stoked he’s OK. What a warrior! 🤙
That was one of the most intense, white-knuckled water rescues I've ever seen in my life. It actually has me emotional now after having seen it. The bravery, fortitude and integrity of the two water rescue guys (and big wave surfers) David Langer & Sebastian Steudtner is OFF THE CHARTS. They knew they were facing a good potential for drowning themselves every time they went in to try and get Thiago Jacaré out of there. Just, wow.

O cara saiu do mar daquele jeito bem característico de quando ele te da uma surra: os músculos todos travados, enrijecidos, quase sem resposta, além estar tonto sofrendo com algum "grau de afogamento" devido a tamanho tempo debaixo d'água. As ultimas forças ele usou claramente pra se agarrar no jet ski e sair dali. Esperamos que esteja tudo bem!
That's intense. Freaking scary stuff. As a novice to surfing, you focus so much on what happens above the water that you forget how scary it can be underwater. This big wave surfing is just on another level. Lucky that he survived and hats off to that amazing rescue team.
Incredible Footage. I keep watching it over and over again! I don't know anything about Water-sports or what exactly he was holding onto when he got rescued, but I sometimes wonder, what would have happened if his hand slipped or he couldn't hang on any longer and fell off and another big Wave dragged him back in, - would he ever have had the physical strength left in him to fight and stay afloat or whatever! :o One more could have been the end of him! :D :o But then I think the second Jet-Ski was following behind for most of the return journey back into shore, so I presume the second driver (Jet-skier?! or Driver I don't know?! )- he would have seen if his hand slipped or if he fell off or anything. : ) It really is like Angels on Jetskis! And ye are always gonna have this Footage to remember and play back!! : ) When life seem hard play this back and you really will know what getting sucker-punched is!!
That was seriously heavy man! Last summer we were there to watch Nazaré it is such a scary and also beautifull place. Hopefull everything is fine with him.
Pipeline has killed more surfers than any other spot, but not gonna lie that Nazare looks nasty. Having said that places like Cortes Banks and Teahupoo are stuff of nightmares.
The thing is, Pipeline has been surfed for 60 years, and (Giant) Nazaré just for 8... safety has improved too... hope we keep this beach with zero casualties for a long time.
@@PedroMiranda True Hawaii has literally pioneered surfing and produced some of the best watermen ever. I think Jaws is on par with Nazare, safety wise it very much depends on reef structure and wave breaks.
@@PedroMiranda And pipeline much more crowded. At nazare it looks like the most power seems to come in the second after the wave broke., with more powerful whitewater than expected. This video is perfect lesson material for safety classes.
@@atmosphereadr588 I would imagine you would be able to drown very quickly at Nazare, not sure if I would rather get slammed into a reef or even get eaten by a great white out at Mavericks. Some dudes have got massive balls or just plain mad.
PLEASE WEAR A CARABINER ON A WRIST BAND. Easily snapped onto the sled! This guy is lucky he had the strength to hold on while being towed back in. The sled alone often cant hold you in these conditions.
First wave he manages to do a lovely big dive, second one barely has the energy to duck his head, third one he takes it right in the face......from there, wow......Our survival instinct is unbelievably strong at times, the body takes over because by now the mind is gone !!
@@greggb557 .....Surely the primal instinct is a physiological response, it's the 'fight or flight' response when all the extra chemicals are pumping through the body. The body essentially breathes itself at the best of times, even though we may at times train the breath, and the body will do everything it possibly can to breathe and survive. At that point it is the only thing that matters, getting that next breath and will ultimately attempt to breathe even if it does so under water, simply because it is a physical action. The best we can hope for is all the training we do in preparation for these kinds of circumstances kicks in, even sometimes when we are on the verge of losing all consciousness.
Its extremely difficult to dive under once you popped 1 or 2 of the inflation tabs, might as well take it on the head and not waste energy trying to go under.
Amazing rescue by a outstanding team! And all the respect to Thiago. 5 big waves in a row. I cannot wrap my mind around that. This is something that only pros like him can expect to survive.
That is the biggest , worst besting I've ever seen in my life 1 10 story building high whitewash, then 4 more 5-7 story ones, this guy is my hero!! Most people would have drowned. Your amazing!!!
It was breathtaking to look, hundreds, thousands of tons of water from above. If u go for these waves u put ur life on the line and maybe not only yours...
That's why these guys train. Inspires me to work harder to charge harder. Im an asthmatic Surfer and I have to take my inhaler in my suit or I can't surf. It's been an adventure

Not sure if it possible but would be nice if the rescue jetski men could see him under water (with kind wifi tecnology). Would it be perfect to get the right spot to a faster rescue.
was he inflated ? any information on that Pedro? I think so , otherwise he wouldn't have made it . The beating is harder when inflated but at least you can catch some air in between the waves
im glad this turned out the way it did! textbook rescue! Im curious do big wave surfers use inflatable vest, similar to an avalanche bag for skiing? what are the pros and cons if they exist? Thanks for sharing this footage, its truly amazing,

I’ve only been surfing for 4 months but why doesn’t he get back on his board and ride the white wash back to shore? Works for me but I’ve never been on a wave more than 10’
They learned a lesson ! When the jetski driver has picked up the surfer dont assume he is o.k. and go back to the line up, check him out a few times , and go back to the beach. well done !
I held my breath for the duration of his hold downs from the safety of my couch , that shit was easy , and on the 4th breath hold I got sick head rush.
I surf, and I always want to learn more and more. Need some pro answers: Him trying to duck dive @ 0:28 with a float will make a difference? will it waste more energy? Or was just a reflex?
The water around him will provide some protection against the impact of the front of the approaching white water. The beating tends to be harder with flotation.
I'm a female surfer, and I have had some major fucking wipeouts and the one thing you have to to when you are in the situations and I surfer is to relax it's hard but you just gotta do it!
