What I find most interesting is that with WipEout 2048, you can see in the track and environment design that the AGRL has just started out in the near-future; the racing line goes through parks and some genuinely recogniseable architecture types, punctuated with futuristic buildings as sign of the future. Cut to WipEout HD and you can see no classical buildings because it takes place 200 years into the future; the AGRL is so established now that tracks are 100% custom built.
There's a game on PC that's clearly inspired by Wipeout; Redout. It nails the feeling of speed. I think I heard something about it comming to PS4 later.
Been playing tons of wipeout 3 recently and am pretty proud of my own flying. When you do well, these games make you feel like a fucking jedi. I got 2 controllers, someone come over and challenge me!
Every time I hear "Onyx" by Cold Storage I can't help but think of flying cars and futuristic city's. That track is just perfect for the Wipeout series and it helped bring Wipeout Pure to life for me.
I thought I could race well when I nailed the last gold medal on WipeOut Pure and Pulse, the first WipeOut games I ever played. Then I bought WipeOut 1 for Vita. Silverstream in a Qirex makes me cry tears of pure virgin's blood.
I spent HOURS playing Wipeout when it frst hit the gaming market. I played it mainly because of the soundtrack. But years later I really became a Wipeout head. I got me many tickets...heh heh. The version on PS3 is beast. Wipeout HD
The series is far from gone, some of you are typing like it's dead. It's currently sitting at an uneasy state, but it will never slip under the radar. The money it can bring in is enough for a company to take advantage. Let's just hope it's not a Microsoft loyal one, or we've got a problem.
Awesome games - awesome soundtracks. I stopped playing video games mid 2000s, so Fusion was my last wipeout game. If I had to get one of the later ones, which one is the best?
I'm trying to convince my friends to buy WipEout HD so we can race online. I haven't played WipEout in years and I'm definitely gonna go rooting through the attic for my PS1 and N64 to play some of the older games. By the way, AG Systems. All the way.
Meseji on the Sega Saturn, Nothing better for old school hype. Resurected the console from my attic last month, its still golden. (side note, Panzer Dragoon on that consoloe is Frikin AWESOME!)
Sucks hard that liverpool closed down. Hopefully the people in studio liverpool can open up new companies and get rights to the wipeout series or other existing or original franchises. Greatest of luck to all of the company, it is sad to see you all go, but hopefully you can contribute elsewhere!
The grid system in Pulse is only an issue for the first couple of weeks you have the game when you're still beating the campaign. The rest of the time, you select your class/mode/track/ship directly in Racebox (still oddly missing in 2048). Kind of an odd thing to complain about. Pulse is smoother and faster than Pure was, too.
if you got it, try using the ag-systems prototype, it won me the A+ event on it against 5 pir-hana speeds, works very well on sol as well, plenty of double barrel rolls. hope it works. :)
WipEout: Play if you have a gigantic nostalgia boner WipEout 2097: Play for the cool tracks in the original engine Wip3out: Play for the cool tracks and odd combat WipEout Fusion: Play if you have been playing F-Zero your entire life but somehow you now want to play a WipEout game WipEout Pure: Play either for the awesome tracks in their original form or because you want the old-ass tracks in modern WipEout physics WipEout Pulse: Play because you don't want your PSP to go to waste WipEout HD/Fury: Play because it's the awesomest of them all WipEout 2048: Play because you don't want your PS Vita to go to waste WipEout Omega Edition (Soon): Play because you want to play WipEout HD on your PS4
I did, but if I remember correctly, the first track was just white noise/static because it was game data. It was either on 2097 or 3, but I forget which. Other than that, 100% agreed
Wow, i had no idea that Pulse was released on PS2, i would have bought that at the time if i'd known. Still, atleast i can play it on the Vita now instead :D
Nothing will be more awesome that the first time i've played wipout on the PSX, first the demo that was with the console and then the game itself. The musicale tracks the circuits and the fury and speed of the races, it was especially exalirating at the time when you only had classical racing games and even so rarly any good ones on consoles at the time( Gran turismo came later irc) I wish i had the memory eraser from MIB just to play the first game like the first time again...
It's gone very much up and down over the course of the whole series, and even then certain members in the community disagree over certain aspects. The high points have definitely been 2097 and 3SE. Pure also holds a special place for a lot of people as it practically resurrected the series. Fusion was the big low, especially with the massive shift in art style and completely different physics.
Hey HellFire, what's your favorite team and WipEout game? My favorite team is and always will be F.E.I.S.A.R. and my favorite WipEout game is WipEout Fusion. :)
I'm so blessed to have the full Psygnosis experience in my memory. They were the uncrowned PSX masters. I still remember the day I got to try Wipeout for the first time in a local toy store.
What a wonderful video - Thank you! Wipeout 2097/Wipeout XL still remains my favourite of the series: Loved the tracks, loved the soundtrack, and I liked the areas of the track you could enter to replenish shield damage. Too bad that game couldn't have been given an HD remake before Studio Liverpool (I still call them Psygnosis) closed.
wipeout fusion may have worked better with more simple textures, but it was a smooth running game, i didnt like the ship designs at all but the craft upgrades were a cool feature. Going off track into rocks was cool
I remember when I were younger and got this game. I was disappointed because it kinda looked like something out of Star Wars Pod Race to me, and because I never played the first one at that time, seeing that some of the crafts had two or even three thrusters and the zone ship having four, let me down in the design aspect...at first. The game was amazing.
Yeah... that one stands out to me like some kind of un-wanted step-relative. The physics were awful and the ship designs were goofy in comparison to all the other games... but at least it did run smoothly. The thing that really killed that one for me was it never felt like you were piloting a hovering vehicle - they all felt glued to the track at an exact height, rather than moving through the air.
David Hoffnung Fucking this! Hard to maneuver as well (Most of them. Late game crafts and Feisar and Uber was just fine), at least in comparison to the old, and even the never games. Not to mention the countless glitches, where you randomly go through the walls or bounce off of the track, just to name a few. Oh and the track design in most levels as well...fucking infuriating with the pillars and those (AAARGH) doors on Temtesh Bay and the cave on Cubiss Float. But despite this, there was something about it I loved to death. Now, I'm not sure what it was.
My Wipeout experience started with Wipeout on the PC, along with games like Mechwarror (god those were the days). Then I played Wip3out, one of my favourite games on the the PS1 and finally Wipeout HD Fury. I was hooked by its futuristic theme, extremely fast yet frustratingly difficult gameplay and last but not least sweet electronic soundtrack. If PS4 is launched with a Wipeout game as its launch title, I will almost certainly buy it.
If you'd played the originals, you'd understand. Then again, playing them now, you would probably think they were shite compared to the later games. They were just much harder and the tracks had a more natural design. The physics were way better too and you could control the nose of the craft. I feel WipEout has been dumbed down a hell of a lot. Still, I do like the later games despite all of the above.
I found this channel through a Steam review by the user "SuperFrodo" commenting about a game called BallisticNG. It is apparently a VR-enabled faithful WipEout clone. When I clicked on this video and heard the classic techno at the beginning, I knew I had found something special. Can't wait to see the sights! The Wipeout series is one of my absolute favorites, alongside the F-Zero series. I wish the new Switch Wipeout game was more focused on blinding speed races than dodging obstacles. This would make it more faithful to the original IMO. Either way, I still have my Nintendo 64 so I'm not that worried ;)
Awesome video dude! When I heard that Cold Storage music start with the 2097 segment (Body in motion?) I was totally overcome with nostalgia. Good times!
Nick D I actually really enjoyed Wipeout Fusion. Well, it was my first Wipeout game, but still, I think it's a fun racing game. Also, the weapons in Wipeout Fusion were pretty cool. How can you not love the Nitro Rocket?
Otm Shank I can see enjoying it out of context of the others. It really isn't a bad game - it's just kind of the odd one out in terms of the series. It reminds me a lot more of F-Zero, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Fusion was good, objectively compared to other games in general, but compared to the rest of the series it was just a little off. It was an example of experimenting and adding new features in the wrong way.
Rockets.....bombs...contender eliminated - forever in my memories..Psx day 1 - love Edm tracks ( fluke, orbital, Sasha ) I would instant buy a new PS5 version .make it happen Sony
If there was the slightest chance of seeing another WipeOut game, I'd buy 2-3 copies of it to distribute among friends! But doesn't seem likely...time to go back to 2048 or to buy a PS3 for HD/Fury, I guess...
Ah! I just realised what that voice is saying in the Wipeout 2097 track. "いぱにもつ" it means sometimes in Japanese... at least I THINK that's what it says.
Wipeout for ps1 was either you loved it or hated it, there was very little in between. The learning curve and being unforgiving is one of the things that made it great. You had to love it to get good at it. flawless runs took love for the game and putting your time in to do so. Linked was great as well on ps1. The style and music stand alone in any racing era of wipeout. if aliens had come to earth and made a racing game for us, that's what it would look and sound like. Great engine and vision.
Very good video there. It's SUCH a waste Studio Liverpool is closed. Thinking about the fact I'll probably never play a new WipEout game ever again just makes me depressed. Playing these kind of classics like WipEout on the PSone is a part of my (and other's) childhood. The years of games becoming classics are definately over from now on. Money is the only thing game developers are interested in anymore. Such a shame. :(
It did indeed, and it was all free. It was one of the few games at the time to have DLC before the Playstation Network was launched. The packs themselves are no longer available through Playstation, but there is a link on WipeoutZone where you can download all of them. Ubermall and Van Uber are in the Gamma Pack.
A very well-made video.Just like the rest. I will to miss Wipeout like hell. Cus I been playing Wipeout since 1995. It´s still my nr 1 favorit racing series of all time. I don´t know...the video game industry sucks balls now days. It´s all about the money...the greed will kill the video game industry once again I think. Like It did back In the 80s with Atari.
I'm afraid it's not a matter of believing, what I said is a fact. Sony are supporting Wipeout in a community-based capacity only, which is why Ami is the only remaining member of the team. As it stands, there won't be any further support for any of the games. Mabye another studio will bring the franchise back in the future, but right now it's been put to sleep.
1 - I don't own it. 2 - The video is meant to show an evolution of the series, and as 64 ran on the same engine it didn't warrant its own section. I did mention it at the start of the 2097 segment though.
Evolution holding the rights to a game is no guarantee that they'll do anything with it, and as it stands right now, they aren't. Even if they did, there's no one left from the original development team.
There's an amount of indie projects obviously inspired by WipEout, here are 2 Polish titles I know that are being developed: "Death Road" for PC and "Flashout 3D" for Android. But NOTHING will ever be comparable to WipEout. The 17-year tradition, teams, the quality, challenging speed along with enjoyable gameplay, design, music and overall climate - there will never be a game like that. Until new WipEout is out.
Really impressed with your very balanced honest answer. To move a step further: How do you feel about Psygnosis and Studio Liverpool? What actually happened? Were Psygnosis acquired or dissolved? I have no idea. Additionally, what are your feelings regarding The Designer's Republic and their possible reformation in the coming year in particular? As always, thank-you. You provide a service to the Wipeout community and I eagerly anticipate your future videos. :)
