Wiper linkage bushing replacement on a 2003 Ford Ranger

My passenger side wiper quit mid stroke. A little nylon piece was worn down. The wiper and the arm that makes it move had separated. I managed to get into the area to replace the bushing.
It might have been less of a headache to remove the wiper motor and the linkage that moves the wiper... and the wiper mechanism... assemble everything outside the engine bay... and put it back in.
This fix-it job may take you about an hour. The designers did not make it easy to get into to repair it. I have no expertise for stuff like this... so, I'm sure you can do it!

Great video, narration, overall production and timing! Thank you. Really what a coincidence. My same wiper broke on my 03 Ranger not a week ago. After watching your video yesterday, I knew what I was dealing with. I have a mechanic's top tip to add to this that will surely help anyone trying to do this. For that last step, the real pain-in-the-#@$$$% step, snapping the motor linkage on to the wiper arm link, over the nylon bushing, instead of the two pliers I have a really quick improvised tool, a press for this. Most ]will have or be able to get. I tried pliers and yea what a pain. I then took a minute to think about it, needing something to apply even pressure on that linkage yet allowing clearance for the nylon cap bushing... round, pref. metal, hollow, open on one end... Eureka! Socket. After trying a few sizes, I found a 7/8in 12pt socket was large enough to fit over the nylon busing, and still apply pressure on the flat linkage around it to evenly press it down (up) over it. SO- 1. Set your channel lock pliers accordingly to fit, almost full open. 2. After positioning the bushing correctly into the linkage hole, using the guide ridges molded in to the sides, it's ready to press. 3 Then slip the socket over the busing from underneath, upwards, holding it there with one hand (or a loop of tape if you need time) , 4. Place the pliers jaw under the socket and over the top wiper blade arm link on top gripping firmly and squeeze together, you'll feel it its gonna go and- snap!!! I couldn't believe how easily it worked. I hope it helps.

Read oasis 015 below, anyone who does the passenger bushing Dorman 49456.1 1/4 inch socket fits the large wiper nut.pull out passenger wiper arm, remove old bushing, I put grease in the ball of the new bushing before squeezing onto the wiper arm.I suspect too much grease will keep you from attaching the ball and socket (hydro-lock)Line up the grooves in the bushing with the steel arm hole (also has grooves) that comes from the wiper motor.Place 7/8 socket behind the arm, (toward the passenger compartment) and squeeze whole connection with large channel lock pliers. The bushing will snap into place easily and securely. So in total (2) press fittings, one on ball and socket and one in the pressing into the steel arm that comes from the wiper motor,Socket is the crazy easy way as I tried to squeeze like crazy without the socket and I couldnt get it to budge.I repeat and agree with oasis below, use a socket behind the steel arm.Easy as heck. Thanks you are genius!

My 03 Ranger is the same color as yours but I have the 6 liter. 222,000 miles and going strong. My passenger side bushing decided to die yesterday during a hard rain. This video will be very helpful in replacing it.

Geno. Thanks. That was a GREAT help! I used the socket that oasis suggested. I hope someone at Ford has a better layout by now!

Thanks for your video. No thanks to Ford engineers! One for using a bushing that wears out so fast and two for such a pitiful design for wiper linkage maintenance. A removable cowl is so superior for access. One more comment, at about 2:50 min. into your video you show popping on the bushing with a pair of channel locks appear so easy. It wasn't quite that easy for me and some grease should be added into the cup of the bushing. That's what the little rectangular pocket is for in the bottom of the cup. Other wise, a very helpful video!

I appreciate you making this video, it saved me $100's of dollars in a mechanic labor for a $10 part! BTW the socket size for removing the nylon nut is 1-1/4.Thank you so much! You're the man! 😎

Came looking for advice. I replaced the plastic bushing, and it snapped firmly into the arm, then the passenger arm ball snapped firmly into the new bushing. It pops back off on the first stroke, every time. The arms aren't binding, and I see nothing wrong!

You may have unintentionally damaged the bushing, installing it. For me, it was extremely difficult to snap it on the ball, even with grease. When it finally popped on, I knew that sucker wasn't coming out again, soon. Plus the bushing rotates smoothly with the grease I put in before snapping it together.
