Clipping a wire is a disgrace. It's quick and cheap, and loses the colour and the texture, the reason the dog is called a 'wire' in the first place.

Hi James, you are 100% correct, hand stripping is the right way to groom wire haired coats. Unfortunately, most pet owners are unable to afford that service and request clipping (which yes, dulls the coat). And not every pet has the disposition for hand stripping as well. So, in that scope, it is ultimately up to the owner (with the groomer educating as best they can), but 99% of the time, the owner will choose to have their pet clipped, not stripped. Not ideal, knowing what I know, but I've learned to accommodate and be happy that at least the pet is clean, mat free, and given grooming attention. Hi Milan, thank you for your insightful comment! Indeed, the Wire Fox Terrier should be handstripped to maintain the color, texture, and composition of the coat. And although I handstrip in my practice, many pet owners cannot afford the service (and many pets do not have the disposition to sit for stripping), so instead of letting the dog's coat become unruly, we use a clipper to manage their pet coats. Reality vs. Perfection. But I am with you, 100%, if I had a magic wand, every wire-haired breed would be handstripped correctly. Thanks for your comment!

Beautiful cut. We have 2 WFT, I only bathe, brush and pluck the longest hair on back. We do ALOT of outdoors activities, 3-4 times a week running fields, woods , lakes so I have been very hesitant about having them completely shaved and groomed is the wire hair helps shield from all the cockaburr and Stickum’s and stuff like that, Does it actually make a difference? Have you noticed pet shaved dogs do they hold onto woods debris more like the online form say or is that just all Poppycocks

Hi, you are so on the right path by just plucking them. Handstripping is the right way to groom WFTs! A lot of the dogs that come to me are urban pets who need to be kept ultra-clean due to their lifestyles, so we trim them short. But you are doing the right thing for your breed, for sure! @@GinasGrooming Thank you for the response, after seeing the freshly groomed dogs I look at my little street looking dog I wonder if I need to pretty them up. But the truth of the matter is they stay washed, brushed, and the lifestyle that I let them lead they are going to get it raggedy a bit. A dirty dog is a happy dog I guess
