Excellent demo. Wonder if the blue cable could be scribbled on at the ends with brown marker pen rather than use plastic cover to show it is live, switch in line? Only draw back I can see. I suppose would be that cable couldn't afterwards be reused for another job, plastic cover can be taken off if need be but ink is permanent marking.
Hi fantastic video, I'm currently wiring up lights and sockets in my shed, from a seperate consumer unit. Would this wiring work on a fluorescent strip light and a pull cord switch?
Hello again, thank you for the speedy reply, I have just had a look inside the florescent strip light I have and there is just what I would call a chocy block connector with a brown and blue wire going into starter. Iam I right in thinking I need to go via a junction box then into the light? Many thanks
Hi GSH your videos are brilliant m8, I'm just wondering how would the diagram work if I wanted to bring my power(feed) to the switch instead of the light, what would have to be changed around if you know what I mean, cheers love the videos

Excellent. But I am confused; my house (which I bought last year) was rewired a decade ago and has no ceiling roses at all (the power goes to the switch first then to the luminaire, which apparently is what is going to become the standard). Local sparks say you don't put ceiling roses in any more, use WAGO boxes etc. Much safer. Do you have a video on how to wire to switch first then lamp?
Absolutely brilliant video ! I’m not a spark and firmly stay away from electrics ! That’s why we have you guys in my opinion but I just love knowing how things work ..... excellent explanation Gaz. Love it 👍🏼
(7:24) - But if that plastic switch is fitted to a metal backbox, the heads of the screws would count as "exposed metal parts" so you would need a CPC in any case. >
Absolutely marvellous video, so educational with reinforcement of facts. Not everyone in teaching ensures understanding, you do. Great! Your students are very lucky to have someone like you. Thank you. Kam
We do at Tresham College but not many colleges in the U.K. use twin brown so I was trying to get the widest appeal with the video. I did state twin brown during the video. 🦾 Gaz
can anyone give me some advice... the light in my bathroom... all of a sudden the bulb is only half illuminating. I have took the light unit apart to see that all the wires are correctly fitted and everything looks alright there is no loose connections as far as I can see I have tried 2 new bulbs also.... same issue remains. Its like there is volt drop somewhere so there is not enough power going to the light to fully illuminate the bulb. All the other lights on the upstairs light circuit are working perfectly just not the bathroom light. If someone could give me some advice on what could potentially fix this I would be grateful. Thanks
I’ve come to swap a 1 way switch last week in one of my bedrooms and the black sleeved connection was in common and the red was in L1. Does this matter? Every other diagram I see including your videos the unsleeved connection is in common? Just confused me.
Thanks Mr Gaz. Like the drawing explanation. I wish I had a tutor like yourself when I was learning. I would be flying now and very rich. Love watching your videos so simple and straight forward. Big fan of GSH learning methods. 🎓🎓🎓👍👍👍
Exactly how I understood it but I've heard that recently it's become a requirement to run a neutral to the switch to facilitate upgrade to a smart light switch at a later date.

They had this playing in college on Thursday for the students am back in college doing level 2 after such a long time. I was thinking of changing the video to the two potty mouths channel you might know who I mean am not saying this one of yours was boring it was late in the day we all needed a bit of a laugh to brighten up are day.
Great video and explained. I have a outside light with one way switch. I want to move the light fixing into another place not far from the old location.its an outside light. I've drilled a hole where I need new light and I've opened up the switch and disconnected the wire for the light. There was a live wire located l1. And the natural for it was in connecter blocks with other 2 nature wires. I've installed new cable and put the live back into slot l1 and the nature wire where the original was. The light is operational now. The problem I'm having I've still getting some power from the old cable I've also put connecter blocks on both ends so it's safe. Can you shine some knowledge please.
Massive thanks for watching. I hope this playlist will be useful 👍🏻 Wiring Diagrams for Lighting and Motor Circuits ru-vid.com/group/PL2Ea5r9gxUUfm4SACOSOZigCeSxxC5xaO
Very clear. However coming out of my ceiling I only have 3 wire, the brown, blue and CPC (I believe there must be a jonction box somewhere) so where do I connect those? Any ideas?
@@jablot5054 Limited ? how so? Wiring can be different from one country to another. And by the way, I found how to do it without the help of an electrian.

You are brilliant, makes perfect sense. I have recently had a look at a new light fitting. 2 L terminals were connected in a loose terminal block and insulated doing nothing. Left were 2 neutrals and earth. The neutrals connected either side of the lamp and the lamp operated correctly via the switch. I assumed one of the neutrals was a sw L (not sleeved). Con checked across these 2 neutrals and operated the sw expecting to gain/lose con but no cont in either sw position. Carried out voltage check and found one N to have mains voltage. Does this mean the switch has been wired after the light? I can’t get my head around it! Would appreciate any help! Real head scratcher.
I should add the voltage on one of the Ns was permanent regardless of switch position. Also, that E I mentioned was connected to the light surround as expected
great videos and more videos showing more complex diagrams would be great especially emergency lighting and emergency control gear and how these are connected
Hi, I have a lighting setup similar to that but slightly different. 2 rooms, new lights, both the same light. I have the three reds in terminal block, 1 in 1 side and 2 in another. The 3 black are 1 in L and 2 in N with all earths together. In light switch it is red in L1 and Black in Com. The light works but has a 2 second delay between me operating the switch and it illuminating. Any ideas as to why there is a delay? The other room with the same illumintes instantly. Tried a brand new light again in the delayed room and still a delay.

@@GSHElectrical Wow, a very clear video. I have another problem that is driving me up the wall. I want to install an extractor fan with TIMER to my existing toilet light circuit. How can I connect the 3 wires coming from the extractor fan/fan isolator to the 2 wires (earth wire is not a prob) coming from ceiling? The same settings as in the video you encourage me to was: Power source coming from CU to Switch to lamp in the ceiling and now I want to add fan isolator/extractor fan to the light circuit to make my toilet smell like perfume
I am currently a student, training to be a multi skilled engineer. I prefer the electrical side of it though. I don't really deal with much domestic wiring. But I always love watching these videos and the ones that Joe Robinson does on his channel.
Scott Barney domestic wiring is very easy! The hard part is learning how to work with the building fabric, lifting floors, chasing and making good for example
Silly question but why does the cpc come bare in the cable. Why do they not have it already done with the green/yellow instead of us having to use sleeving..??? just wondered.
@@stevensmith4449 tight s*ds them manufactures...lol would be nice if they sold it, would be interesting to see the cost of what they save. We pass it onto the customers anyway.
Glen Fraser because the cpc doesn’t carry current under normal conditions (enough information at this stage) and only current under fault conditions to earth for a maximum of 5 seconds the cpc is not sheathed. However in Ireland the cpc is sheathed within the cable. Thanks for the question. Gaz 🦾
