Brother if you take a small flat head you can push and pull at the same time and tho's wires will come out. Then you do not need all them wires and no need to cut. If you need you can reuse them..

Just wondering: could you not have used one balancer per 2 Tesla modules (so 12s) instead of one balancer per module (6s). Means half as many balancers required? Or am I missing something (only at the design stage of my future large system so I could be wrong) Cheers :)
@jehugarcia
@jehugarcia 9 месяцев назад
yup running like this (one balancer per module) is not the best way, one balancer could balance to different voltage than the other one and now you would have an unbalanced pack due to balancers
@SiriusSolar
@SiriusSolar 4 года назад
I was just poking around how to treat these batteries and learned that although you want to keep them in the mid-range state-of-charge especially staying away from the higher percentages for longevity it is still recommended to occasionally bring them to 100% or 0% so the BMS can more accurately balance the cells. The reason is stated as this: With LFP batteries it is only practicable to balance at an SOC close to 100% or close to 0% SOC because this is the only time the individual cell voltages are far enough apart from each other for a BMS to accurately measure the difference in SOC. Which would explain why bottom balancing is better than top. That way higher-capacity cells are kept at a lower state of charge. Otherwise they would needlessly be at a higher state of charge where they would degrade faster.

@@ModernOffGridDIY I think I've seen the last one and a half years worth of your videos but I don't remember this particular point so maybe I missed 1 or it was in an earlier video. And all this had me thinking the beauty of the active BMS is you can top balance if you know a cloudy week is ahead. Then when your batteries get near empty the bms would take power from the higher-capacity cells and put it into the lower capacity cells enabling you to get more kilowatt hours out of your bank before it goes dead.

These aren’t LFP. NMC can be balanced throughout the voltage range but you’re right about trying to avoid balancing in the middle and why bottom balancing is superior when it comes to getting the most out of your pack

Hi there, great video. I also have a question on the number of balancers. You are using a 24s balancer which means that two is more than enough for the build. Is there any reason why you are using one balancer per battery?

He is running a 12S system, so one balancer can hook up to two Tesla packs. If you cross-strapped the B1's across all the packs, up through B11 independently, all of the Tesla packs could run on one balancer. Cross-strapping would put the 76 parallel cells in parallel with 76 or 152 additional cells in this system. Six balancers in this configuration is just additional expense, without redundancy.

Using that balancer do the cells have to connected in sequence cells 1,2,3,4 to the board or can it be connected in any order 1,3,2,4?

These packs have a tremendous capacity for accepting (and delivering) charge. It's basically impossible for you to charge them too fast or discharge them too quickly (besides maybe a full short which would be very bad). They are rated at something like 500amps which at 50V is ~ 25,000kw. That's a huge inverter or a very large diesel genset.

Howdy! I love your work, videos, enthusiasm and insight! Keep up the good work! Question: I recently bought 4 tesla smart 57v batteries for off grid solar. Im using an outback flexmax 80 which has the thermal sensor and other safety settings(max charge etc) Im using an sma sunny island inverter which has a temp sensor as well as settings for low power shut off etc. i feel pretty safe, but want to add bms for extra protection. This looks like the one for me. I bought parallel boards to connect all 4 batteries together for balancing, but maybe instead i should get 4 separate balancers like you have here. Balancing all 4 big batteries with only one small balancer may be too slow/unsafe...? It sounds safest to have a bms that can interrupt the large power cables to/from inverter/charger, but that seems tough to find (some large relay controlled by the bms etc) i see this balancer can pull power to bring down overcharged cells. Will this, or another solution you know of, disconnect bad cells to help prevent fire? Up until now I’ve been using FLA with the most caveman rig possible and its been flawless, safe & cheap but not so efficient. And advice is greatly appreciated.

I think it is totally not necessary to install those Active Balancers at all on your Tesla battery module of 5.3kwh block!!! What you need is BMS only? You know why? You did not couple each block of 5.3kw by yourself by getting different tesla cells to build the block by your self. If you had done the pack by using different cells then you need active balancer. Active balancer is not BMS so you still need BMS there. If not you will damage the battery. What you have there now is only an Active balancer with no BMS. If i am wrong correct me.

I think I am more confused after watching this. LOL What do all those red wires attach to???
@MichaelSchwabTX
@MichaelSchwabTX 3 года назад
The small red wires are balancing wires. They attach to a circuit called a BMS (battery management system) that actively drains a small amount of current from cells that are slightly overcharged when the pack is charging. This allows those with a slightly lower charge to fill up giving you much more capacity. The problem with lipo (and lifepo4) is that ideally charging stops when the pack voltage reaches a max V. If you go beyond this without a BMS, some cells with slightly higher voltages will overcharge/overheat and cause damage . To prevent this, we use the BMS to bleed off some of the excess charge on those cells specifically allowing the weaker ones to top off. Now, why are some weaker/lower in voltage than others? Heat and other factors play a roll in charge/discharge rates by effecting the internal cell resistance. This makes it impossible to always have them drain/fill exactly the same. Without a BMS a pack like this will quickly become out of balance and eventually cell voltages will go down lower and lower eventually even reverse charge. This is a recipe for fire, and does permanent damage. NEVER run LIPO without a bms.

@@ModernOffGridDIY Since the site is down is it possible to say here what brand these BMS are to find elsewhere? I've been looking at Dilithium, REC, Electrodacus, ZEVA and SIMP. Just looking for simple balancing and charger/load shutoff loops.

I also had problems with the link. Please give us an alternate.

It looks like your bms can support up to 24s configuration and you're running a 12s setup(50.4 volts)... you could run that entire wall on 1 BMS, instead of 1 bms for each pack. please message me and I'll help you clean that install up! look at it this way, each module is 6s74p pack.(25.2 volts full charge.) 2(packs) in seris is 12s74p. and 3 of those in parallel is 12s222p. That is your entire wall, 12s222p. so you only need 1 BMS that can do 12s. Also, If you have the money to build that system, why dont you spend the time and on the tools to pin, depin, and crimp new connecters. You can make new ethernet plugs, balance plugs, and so on. then you don't have unsightly wire joiners. All the connecters have a name and you can purchase the tiny metal pins inside them and crimp them onto the wires.

@@highonahill I am stumped. I purchased a 10s BMS. I am hooking up 3 Tesla 24v packs in parallel. I know I need to have equal voltages before hooking them up. Which wires of the BMS should I hook to each battery? Thanks very much

@@AndrewRoberts123 it's sounds like you need to do a little more research and I need more information about your planned setup config. 3 tesla modules is not specific enough. Are you paralleling the packs or running them in series? Also 10s bms is pretty useless for either config.

@@highonahill They are the 5.2 kwh 444 cell units. They're going to be connected in parallel.
