Hi Pete, I am no farmer but because of my interest in mechanical things I started to watch your channel. More than the mechanical stuff I got interested in your view of animal husbandry. Though I like to have and rare animals, as a person born to the Buddhist faith I will never be able to do so because of the element of taking life. Your view made me understand that if you can justify what you do you can be happy. Wish you all happiness in your endeavours.
Pete, I started A small farm in upstate Vermont about four years ago growing American Aberdeen in my “spare time “from my real job as a financial advisor. I found your channel about two weeks ago and have watched Many of your episodes since that time (my wife questions what I’ll do once I’ve seen them all). You have been a true inspiration and caused me to question a great deal of what I’m currently doing. As a financial advisor I have helped many people to be able to retire comfortably but sadly continue to have concerns for my own long-term well-being and thus I’m not quite ready to make the leap. I’ll continue watching you as I do nightly while first getting into bed as well as every morning at breakfast and no doubt continue to be inspired by all your doing. Thank you for these videos, my guess is you may not realize how much they mean to some of us.
Pete,I’m like a little kid almost,it always feels super when I’ve gone as far as you have with a rebuild, the hair stands up on my arms, when you hit that starter, and hear the first explosion in those cylinders, hardly wait for yours,I won’t miss it.
Don't feel bad on the amp meter, I've been around electronics all my life and I'm 78 now, and I always forget which way to wire an amp meter. for the "Goes in it, vs the goes out it" all you have to remember is when you "Let the smoke out ! do it fast!" less damage that way!. good luck can't wait to hear it purr. thanks for sharing Pete. God speed.
I am so enjoying this series that I have ordered a Haynes Build Your Own Combustional Engine mini model! As a 65 year old female this will be a challenge, glad I watched and learned a thing or two!
I’m glad to hear you painted that gauge, I couldn’t sleep last night worrying about that 😂 just kidding but I’m still glad it matches the rest of the engine! I really appreciate all the extra work you’re doing on this series! I bet this series is very popular! Stay safe Pete and always be awesome 😎
Amazing! I can't tie my shoelaces the same way twice, but your wiring explanation seemed to make sense to me. Nice work! The bracket for the alternator that your dad made looks like it came off of a production line. Can't wait to hear her roar. Thanks. . .
@Pete: You remind me (very much) of my maternal grandfather-I'm considerably older than you...so don't take offense;-). He was a master machinist and worked his entire adult life at the Washington Navy Yard (D.C.), i.e. back when they actually built/maintained things there. I remember him occasionally going to work on the house mechanical systems, family vehicles, etc.; it was always fascinating to watch and it instilled a bit of confidence in me. He had an absolutely wonderful sense of humor like you too.
Pete, I just want to say, I've learned more about engines in the past few months than I ever have. The way you explain things makes them sound so... simple and easy. The fact that you take the time to show every little detail is frankly amazing. Thank you for all that you do and keep it up! I cannot wait to hear that MD fire up for the first time!
Looking good Pete! As a new small farm owner I'm really enjoying your channel - and as a former engineer/gearhead I'm really enjoying this type of rebuild project!
Some food for thought, Pete. A product called "Corrosion X" was developed for Boeing, discovered and embraced by the Marine Industry (here in the Pacific Northwest). They found that boats which sank in salt water (and raised) CAN have their electric panels/instruments saved by squirting Corrosion X on them. Sort of the next level that dielectric grease would provide, but kills corrosion/rust too. It sells on Amazon. Not cheap (close to $20/can), but GREAT stuff for all those electrical connections. It'll get drawn up the strands of wire and give you some lasting protection. Lookin' good there Kemosabe.
I can’t wait to see it fire up, youve done a lot of work , I’ve been watching every video and waiting anxiously for the next video. Lot of work put into this project and it definitely shows!
I am sure the anticipation is building as you are on the home stretch in getting the MD ready to fire up. Almost like getting ready for a rocket launch at the cape. Thanks for your explaining as you go along all so interesting .
How you can remember all of that is amazing to me. I'm doing well if I can put batteries in a flashlight. I love your videos, this may sound funny but my dad had the same color eyes as yours so watching you always reminds me of him. Thanks.
If you want maximum amperage to the starter run the negative ground right to one of the starter bolts the engine will tern over much faster that’s what I did on my tractors
It's getting exciting now!!! Once it's up and running, I think I'd have a hard time getting excited about tearing it apart again next winter to do the back half of the tractor.
Great work on the tractor! Need a project for next winter? I have two waiting in the wings, a 1960 Ford 641 and a 1968 Ford 5000...I will gladly let you do one!
The tractor is coming along great. When you get the front half together it would look really nice. It brings a thought of something new and something old. With a young man of yester year on the seat! I am ready to hear her run even if her butt not sexy yet! Thanks for taking on a great project for all of us to learn.
Thanks for the informative class to me it's really learning also a lot of remembering these days as young boy with my Father doing at home in Massey ferguson 135
Pete, I’ve been going through an M myself. I switched it to push button start with a relay for the very reason you mentioned, those OEM remake buttons are just no count!
Excellent video Pete :) also MD engine going together nice and looking nice too! Also Pete when put ground cable on body were belt pulley houseing use one thing can try use on bolt use a washer on to of hex nut down from it the eye connector battery also another washer to so look like hamburger it and bolt up is save on corrosion problems too ! Every month or 3 months squirt some pentriotion fluid keep from corrosion and get wet or dirty connection ever too! I done that for years on my Postive & Negative connector plus on starter even Alternator get true Amps from battery to do Cold or Hot starts even Alternator recharge of Amps plus Voltage too on my vehicle save the battery get worn out also Starter and Alternator burn out last long time years more than expected! I get 10 to 13 years compare before that trick I would only get 5 to 3 years on changed a Starter or Alternator & Battery but get full Reserve amps too longer! Yes agree that Starter Button and Starter Switch doesn't last long time and also lube the with engine of squirt can or Pentriotion fluid save from gum up or wearing or corrosion too! You be amazed if try this told hear on this message also save from Breaking down! Also hope can get that Foot Pedal Starter Switch set up again to and be excellent video to show how work to some You Tube videos viewers and I like watch it to !
You do a real good job of explaining and keeping it simple. Aside that- I don´t like the narrow front end. I´ve seen other Farmalls with a "normal" wide front end, to me this looks way superior. Yep, I am European- we don´t have such narrow front ends anywhere. They seem tippy. And please put nice lights on this but no LED´s ;) I find it careless running a tractor around without proper lights. Way too many people have their eyes anywhere but on the road... But anyway, for a home shop You did a darn good job. I can´t wait to see it doin´work and puffing smoke :)
If I'm not mistaken, positive is always positive on a 12V negative ground system. I'm thinking your ammeter is wired backwards, and I know for a fact the coil is 12V to the positive post and the wire from the distributor goes on the negative post on the coil to ground the coil every time the points close and make the coil fire.
We had a magneto and we hand cranked the tractor but then when the sun went down then we were done for the day. Later on we put on a electrical system to extend our hours.
Also Pete on GM Delco Alternator you be using on one wire one and what do on Regulartor connector on side shell has 2 pins do put plug in on 2 pins so no dirt get them or special connector cover hooks to nothing?
