Wisconsin city mayor tows away only ballot drop box, investigation launched

The only ballot drop box in Wausau, Wisconsin, was removed by the city’s mayor, who was seen wearing a hard hat and gloves while using a dolly to transport the box back inside City Hall. The drop box had been placed outside for residents to submit their absentee ballots.

Not sure why people are throwing a fit over drop boxes. It was a choice, aka not mandatory. The election clerk made the decision to have one. It doesn't matter what the mayor thinks or wants. He didn't have the authority to steal it.

Greater certainty of delivery of absentee ballots vs the postal service. They also allow the convenience of dropping off a ballot when the offices are closed.

@bearinmind50 Zip evidence of USPS screwing up ballots. The perception's there, but no evidence. The perception is also there that drop boxes are somehow unsecure. But no proof of that either. So, a Court has said it's up to the clerks. So, it's up to the clerks.

63 years old & I remember when I was a kid there were polling places all over the nieghborhood now IC ballot drop off boxes everywhere BUT THEN I have always lived on the West Coast ... I feel real sorry for people that live in hillbilly America

Why? There has been mail in voting for out of area citizens and service members for over a century. It's more work for registrars but our citizens and democracy is worth it. Drop boxes (and curb side voting) help the disabled, people with multiple jobs or a delivery job or a child in the car or they maybe carrying a virus, remember that. Those ballots are scrutinized more closely than any others. It is impossible for someone to vote more than once.

Wisconsin is currently run by dems who do anything to win elections. In 2020 this included immobile altzheimer patients in nursing homes voting. They couldn't even recognize their own family members. The staff filled out the ballots and signed their name to them and used drop boxes to file it. This happened in Racine and made local news.The police found no wrong doing. So if you are dead, you can just keep on voting I guess.

Actually wrong. These are state election for a federal president but the rules vary from state to state. There are some federal rules that apply for the federal election but most of the rules state rules. As long as mail voting is legal I don't see any problems with a ballot drop box.

it'd be nice if a whole lot of citizens had cameras 24/7 on those drop boxes, and it would be nicer if those citizens had competing interests so that everyone checked everyone else. You don't know the answers in the folder, but you can count how many folders are dropped by whom.

A ballot box being moved without proper notice and informed consent by the local election committee is not legal. If the mayor wanted people to vote but also ensure the safety of the ballots he is more than welcome to sit outside and guard it... or better yet, he could hire an off-duty police officer to stand there and guard it. What he did was interference in an election.

You cannot do that after city hall closes. Outside drop boxes allow you to drop your ballot after working hours. Many people work when city hall is open - and need an after hours drop box.

The State Elections Commission Rule is that Each City/County Clerk who runs elections gets to decide if they want a drop box and where. Not the Mayor, not the city council, not the town or county board. The Clerk who is running the election.
