Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Appleton 

I must say i am from the Fox Valley area originally. Just south of the Appleton area (in Chilton). I am a musician and it runs through my veins.

I grew up in the Fox River valley born in 1963 my first memory's as a very young child was living in a small house surrounded by farmland and woods in the township of Grand chute. Moving from there in and around 1967 to the south side of Appleton on to Telulah ave we had a park called Mead and Mead pool directly behind our 1/2 acre yard next door to us was my family's farm house, I remember chickens in the yard my grandfather built our house on the spot where the garden was, in front of our house as I looked south you could see untouched woodland and family farms to the north down a ways as well was Telulah park. Through our back yard just some hundreds of yards we're ravines that we're untouched, valleys that in the spring or after heavy melting snow had overflow waters running rapidly down to the Fox River. These places of paradise as a curious young growing boy provided a vast amount of adventure especially when discovering that it held Indian arrow heads and artifacts. Beyond the Ravines was the mighty fast flowing Fox River that always captured my imagination was a place that held the largest fish and snapping Turtles I've ever seen. It was a dangerous place to explore as a younger guy with my best friend Tom but that only made it more fun. I am proud to say that I got to grow up in the Fox River valley just a few hundred yards from my house, and always appreciated the age old untouched giant oak and maples that peppered the Ridgelines and the many parks along the river and if you look there are still some there today. One thing that I do remember as a 70s kid was the sundown law as well, also the river even though beautiful it was very polluted. One of my favorite spots was by the turning trestle and the trail up and down the river from Telulah park to the law street hill and the locks. We used to fish from the grates above the river with the mill rats/workers at the condensery as they came out on their brakes. Those were the days and I thank God for the memories.
