Testing out some new camping gear for 2024.
The Wise Owl 11x6 rain fly/tarp and my Wilcore 11 foot double nest hammock.
It rained for 12 hours none stop, so I say this was a good test.
specs:
-Hammock Tarp is 11 ft long by 9 ft wide and 26 oz
-Reinforced stitching, along with leak-proof tapered seams with a PU rating of 3000 mm water pressure
- Material : 210 T Nylon plus carry bag made with the same material
- 10 inch guy lines
- Aluminum tent Stakes
Conclusion:
This rain fly might best work with a 1 or 2 person tent, or a hammock shorter then 11 foot long.
All and all it did preform very well. The inside of the fly was bone dry, and after a few adjustments
the hammock only got a little wet at the ends.
Granted, I am new to rain fly hammock camping, so my set up may need a few adjustments to get it just right. The Wise Owl could work perfectly fine with a 11 foot hammock underneath.

Yup, bigger tarp, I prefer 12ft tarps. Also, pitch the tarp lower for better rain coverage and add some drip lines to your suspension to prevent the water from getting to the hammock. Good start, keep learning!

Yea... just echoing everyone else here. Lower the tarp onto the hammock and add some drip lines onto the hammock suspension at both ends. I use either pieces of ripped up old tshirts in strips and girth hitch them on both sides or pieces of paracord. Mainly gotta lower the tarp. Even with my suggestions you will get rain in tgere in windy weather but not near as bad as what you have there.

I’ve set my wise owl tarp up at least one time when we had a tropical storm coming through our area. I managed to hang my tarp closer to the hammock and it was kept dry by doing so. Also, on the hammock I added a Ridgeline so as to allow a better hang for more comfort. By doing so, I was able to get a double hammock under the wise owl tarp with plenty room on either side to keep rain off the hammock ends. The Ridgeline also helps give a consistent hang regardless the with if the space I am hanging between.

Thanks for the advice ! I actually gave it a 2nd test during a 3 day rain event last weekend, and shortened the distance between the hammock and rainfly, and it worked great 👍. Haven't added the extra ridgeline yet, but I mostly likely will in the future.

I keep one end lower then other so water runs off. Won’t have it collect in middle.

@boywonder2799 Thanks for the tip. I will try that.

In anything other than a light rain I would suggest decreasing the distance between your hammock and the fly. That will likely eliminate a lot of the issue with water getting to the hammock.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to hammock camping. Every bit of advice helps. Thanks for commenting

@@silverwolvesutility5219 No problem. Part of the fun is learning and sharing the tweaks that make it successful. Thanks for the review of the tarp. I bought four on sale last week without much thought for our scout troop to use as "backpack-able" dinning flys. I know the brand but not the product. Figured I can always return them. It was good to see your review prior to opening the box.

I really like Wise Owl products - I have several Wise Owl hammocks. If you lower this tarp as mentioned in another comment, you'll have better chances of staying dry, but you're not going to have much room this is fine with many folks - I have a DD 4x4 tarp that I LOVE, it provides plenty of room for me to stand up and walk around and my hammock even stays dry. Some say the 4x4 tarp is too much it all boils down to personal preference.

Looks like the strap at the wet side is looped through the beanie? The beanie should be left clear as it is the "rain break" between the sling and the hammock. A comment above rightly suggests use two beanies to be sure. Enjoyed the vid, cheers.

I think your tarp is too high over the hammock. I've slept through wind driven rain, and stayed perfectly dry before. Keep the hammock close to the tarp, and have the sides drop at a 30-45* angle.

Thank you for this, I'm watching this for that reason, using mine in a few weeks with potential downpours and I kept telling myself today, just lower the tarp, the pitch is up to you! So I read this before I'm even watching this video. And no trekking poles?
@todddavis9938
@todddavis9938 5 месяцев назад
@@luangoubeaux3876 Trekking poles can be useful when the weather is nice and you want to lift one side of your tarp up higher like a covered porch area. In high winds, it can act like a sail leaving you exposed. When you know bad weather is coming get everything staked out nice and tight and you should be good to go. I typically drape a generic mosquito net down from my tarps ridgeline to keep the bugs at bay. Good luck with your trip!

One more stupid question, what if my trees are closer together? I'm taking a ridgeline and some clips just in case I have to make adjustments. @@todddavis9938
