69 too and seen them many times in England, When I watch on RU-vid brings back great times, times never to come back sadly, now where's my cheesecloth shirt😅
I agree with @rickhensley5963 about the British rock band Wishbone Ash. Their music is a superlative blend of bluesy guitar playing and progressive rock compositions with lyrical content that borders on the mystical. I have seen them perform live, no less than three times in my hometown of Bombay (Mumbai) in India during the 1980s. The lineups then featured Andy Powell and Steve Upton, Turner brothers (once each if I recall correctly) and guitarist Laurie Wisefield as well. Great songs, without any doubt! Argus, There's The Rub, No Smoke Without Fire... all still stand out as fantastic albums along with some of the undocumented live shows (like the ones i mentioned in India).
+Rog Shrubber Myself and friends didn't underrate them. Right up there with the best. They didn't get radio time because the dumbass radio producers couldn't pin a genre on them. How about just kickass music/rock & Roll
Sorry to butt in again folks, but I just can't stay away from this fantastic clip. It is perfection from start to finish. The composition, the vocal, the bass, the drums, the guitar work and the synergy are just utterly faultless. If there is a better recorded live performance from a rock band on YT, I have yet to see it.
Yes, I've commented before on this channel about this performance, too. Stunning guitar work from both Andy and Laurie. Beautiful solos full of soul and feeling. I never tire of it.
Completely agree guys, what a brilliant track, the guitar riffs anazing, but also percussion and base, the whole track is mesmerizing, got to be the most underated band ever😀
This particular performance is somewhat of a reoccuring 'fix' for me... We had a power cut last night and with candles lit all around, there was nothing left to do but play a guitar.... As I was noodling around the fretboard, I drifted into the opening solo of Persephone, which I learned to play - albeit crudely - over 30 years ago (when I had the Flying V...).... When the power returned, I just had to listen to this lovely ballad agian, so I cued -up the studio version [There's The Rub] to listen to through my Senheiser headphones... Something I highly recommend your guys try... After which, I've been humming it all day ! Earworms being what they are... So, I had to return to the best live version I know of. THIS ONE.
Oh man, this takes me back to my youth... I was 19 years old, in the army, and so in love with a girl that didn't care about me... Their music was a baulm that kept me going on...
This has to be my favorite Wishbone Ash tune. It has so much emotion, while it tells a great story. As someone once quoted: "Persephone is like a fine wine, to be sipped gracefully, rather than guzzled down like a stein of beer". I couldn't agree more. Really enjoyed this video and based on the thumbs up responses, 98.2% agree on this.
In mijn jonge jaren was Wishbone Ash een geweldige band en weinig bekend in Nederland. Ik heb het over 1978 of vroeger. Inmiddels leven we in 2012 en nog steeds is dit geweldige muziek. Rob Dikkers
Wishbone Ash was one of the best bands that ever lived on the face of the earth. By the way, a common thing in Great Britain, where you have the best of rock for decades! What is to kill in Wishbone Ash, besides a total commitment to the proposal of a simple, clean and wonderful rock, is to do everything with this quality only with the basic instruments, drums, bass, guitars base and solo and nothing else . And the vocalization ... is awesome! I discovered this band by chance in 1974 and since then my life has changed! Worthy of a Pink Floyd, Led, Deep Purple and stuff like that. Even with the Beatles ... I am a passionate about this classic band and the Argus album is undoubtedly one of the best ever performed by these geniuses, as good as the Sargent Peppper's ... Paul Pecchio, from S. Paulo, Brazil.
You can't compare the complexity of wishbone ash with led Zeppelin or pink Floyd, and thanks to Alan parson they found their defying sound on their album dark side of the moon .
Perfekcja
Andy Powell could make that flying Vee sing like no other. What a great double guitar band. Weaving solos in and out of each other. I am so glad I saw them several times. Great live band.
McDonnell Douglas, you're right, but so is Laurie's solo in the middle of the song. Utterly beautiful. It's a pity that the camera just misses the flurry of the first few notes. Every note in all of these solos comes directly from the heart.
I've been listening since ebaut 1975;76 year , from the very beginning, something very beautiful. Nobody has ever created something so beautiful. Great melody and two leading solo guitars. Beautiful sound.
Blinding. What an absolute perfect balance of rhythm, bass, percussian, vocals and lead: total respect and appreciation guys and thanks a million for the share dude :)
I must have played 'There's the Rub' 1000 times. This live version is absolutely awesome! I love when an artist takes a recorded song and gives it artistic flair when playing live! Wishbone Ash is one of the most underrated bands!!
Underrated ???…..They were reckoned to be one of the best live bands of that early seventies era. Where do you people get your ideas from. They were not a singles band which may explain there lack of appearances on TOTP but who gives a shit about that. You obviously are too young to remember. Very highly rated !!!!
I love this band and especially this tune. The albums "There's the rub" and "New England" are fantastic recordings. There is just something about the incredibly complementary sound between Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield during this span of time. Persephone is such a beautiful and soulful song with exquisite solos and this live version just shines. Thank you stevedr for posting this video.
Yes very true, and complimented by Martins vocals. And listen to Andy Powells guitar at the ending...very very underated band indeed, they are superb Im seeing them live this Friday in Coventry...Andy Powell still belting it out together with Mark Abrahams...superb❤❤❤
argus is one of the great works of rock that will never fade from the minds of all who have even a note of appre. for the talent and sincerity of such a devoted group of musicians. keep music in your head and life will be not so bad .
Lyrics There's a light that shines on Persephone, Always a fire in her eyes, And the last time that I went to her I could tell things weren't right. I just don't care to see your years go wasting, There's no longer magic in your eyes. In your time, you could outshine everybody else around, But your off-stage ways might be a bore - You take a bow, you take a fall. I just don't care to see your years go wasting, There's no longer magic in your eyes. I came to be here in the footlights, To live with you through every song, And your face displays a peaceful field. I can't believe the curtain has to fall. Now I know your years were never wasted, Tonight I saw the magic in your eyes.
Agreed! a cracking version. Andy P really unloads on this one!. Saw the Ash many times through the 70's with both Ted and Laurie and they never failed to deliver. Tks v.m.for posting.
Not pioneers but great exponents of twin guitars - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac were pioneers of this style and Wishbone Ash cite them as a major influence .
Yeah man, those were the days when public German TV was at its best. An entire concert of Wishbone Ash aired during prime time! Still love them in 2014!
today I discovered and really fell in love with Wishbone ash. in the year 2020.44 years after this recording.this is the power of music-it’s immortal and lies beyond time.
Andy Powell's guitar from 6.0 onwards - sublime. This is what I saw in Birmingham in 1976 and this is what made me love them so much. I still do. If you haven't done it already, check out Elegant Stealth - tracks Invisible Thread, Give It Up, A Man With No Name, Warm Tears... They're still doing it.
Just about my favourite Wishbone Ash song - right up there with "Throw Down the Sword" - I always thought that Laurie did all the main leads on this one - surprising to see Andy in command - anyway, a great ballad, one of the best in rock as far as I'm concerned!
I first heard Wishbone Ash in 1972 and they are the best. I've since seen them three times , once each in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Come back to Texas, Andy.
Hard to believe, I first saw WA. over 50 years ago. 1973 in Colorado Springs. I was 15. Still listen to them all the time. Home, truck, Fishing, camping. You get the idea. Second time was during the 2nd Bomb Cyclone in 2019. We loaded our truck up with sleeping bags, blankets, food etc. It was about 75 mile trip. Hardly anyone on the road. WA. made the show in a little van and trailer. About a 1/3 of the people didn't make it,so we got to move down close. Great show. Alot of fun.
its my 53rd birthday tomorrow , ive heard this this band and this song so many times..... and it cannot be bettered ....somethings are are just beautiful and that's all you can say.....
Just brilliant! I saw Wishbone Ash in 76 or 77 (don't remember the date now !!) at Hammersmith Odeon. What a great concert it was. This track rides high along with a few other favorite WA creations.
Saw them in the 70"s when they opened for Chicago in Tampa Fl. I remember the audience was not sure what to make of them. They were ahead of there time.
@themore09 I was fortunate enough to see Wishbone Ash 3 times. They were actually the first concert I ever saw, I was in Indianapolis in a skating rink. The warm up was Vinegar Joe. One didn't need to bring any treats. The smoke in the air took us all there. Wow what a show. Probably about 1973 give or take. The subsequent shows where phenomenal as well.
That's cool. I first heard them 44 years ago and saw them live 38 years ago in London. Then I just saw them again last Month. Still really good music and a great band, even with the new members, Bob on bass guitar, Muddy on guitar and Joe on drums along with original member Andy Powell. I got even autographs and a quick photo with Andy after the show!
Absolutely my favorite Wishbone Ash tune. The guitar solos so typical of the hippie/antiwar era. Thanks so much for this fabulous video of one of my favorite groups. What a performance and that was only one tune.
Long time fan (from the 70's), inspired again by this performance. Amazing! Thank you for this and thank you for music that keeps us all wanting the most from life. Magic!
Now I can see where Iron Maiden gets there influence from.Genius spreads I guess. These guys are absolutely amazing, majestic, glorious, arcane, strativariuos,DARN IT! I CAN'T FIND A WORD TO FIT THEIR MAGNITUDE OF AWESOMENESS!
My wise older brother got me into Ash when I was still at school and I was lucky enough to see them live in the 70s. This is a terrific performance from all the guys.
