Wisteria is a vining plant with blueish purplish cascading flowers. They are strong growers and can easily take over your garden. They love full sun and are drought tolerant. Watch this video to see how to propagate them through the cuttings.

Thank you for posting an HONEST video of propagation. Usually, I see the propagation videos and the person who is making the video shows that ALL or most of their cuttings have rooted and grown successful plantings. I go to do that and most of mine die. It is very frustrating and makes me feel like a failure. Now, I can plant many and know that not all of them are going to make roots and probably at least half will die. Now, I will go and start my new wisteria vines. :- )

Excellent tutorial, I put all my cuttings on the north side of my house ( northern hemisphere) they are in shade, but get bright indirect light. I am getting ready to set up some wisteria today. They are so beautiful. For those who haven’t grown them, I had one in moderate shade, just sun through light leaf canopy. It was there three years did not do much. I switched it to half day full sun and it has gone wild.

Hi! I love how simple you make it, great video. Is there any chance we could get an update on the growth, 2 years on? 😁 How long does it take before any chance of flowers? The only reason I am hesitant is that when I just google it, the first thing that pops up is that it takes 15-20 years to flower from a cutting, and I don't want to wait *that* long 😅 Thanks so much!
@EasyPeasyGardening
@EasyPeasyGardening Год назад
It depends on the growth. Unfortunately I moved out of the previous house and many plants were left behind. You should grow it away from your house because a mature plant has very invasive roots and it can hurt the house.

Can you please help me in buying a cut branch since it will take a very long time for the seed to germinate and grow.

Check your local nursery. Also see if there is a shrub growing in the neighborhood. If yes, you can ask them for a cutting.

Thanks for the lesson! What was the name of that powder again, did you say rooting carbon? Can you propagate without the powder, too?
@EasyPeasyGardening

Rooting hormone. It promotes root growth

You can propagate without rooting hormone too but the success rate will be lower

Wonderful video! I have 4 climbing Wisteria and all bloom except one which is quite huge. It’s been about five years and no blooms yet. What do you recommend?
@EasyPeasyGardening

If the plant started from seeds, it takes many years. Be patient.

With the plastic over the top,can they get too hot? I am on long island in NY. I have been taking plastic off for the day when temperature is in 70 and 80,in direct sun. I do have some new growth,but no leaves yet. I put plastic back on in early evening. I am also trying to root a cherry blossom tree. Have new growth on that too,but leaves I left on cutting,seem to be getting some brown spots. Thanks for nice video! At least with new growth, I must be heading in right direction! Do you feed the cuttings with anything when new growth begins? Miracle Grow?

If you start with fresh soil you don't need any fertilizer for a few months. When you transplant them, you can add fertilizer

I don't remember but I normally used general purpose soil, preferably fresh.

It's September where I live (Ohio), and I was wondering whether it's too late for me to do this. Also, will they die if I leave them outside over the winter? Could I winter them over in my garage to send them into a dormant state and then bring them out in the spring? Thanks for your video. I just subscribed.
@EasyPeasyGardening
@EasyPeasyGardening 2 года назад
You should try propagating it in next spring. It will die outside at least when it's young. You can bring it in garage.

This was my question, too, so thanks for asking and thanks also for the answer. To be sure I'm understanding correctly, you recommend we propagate next spring then bring the young plants in for the winter and plant them the following spring?

So there are many growing around my city, but I've notice that nearly all of them have no leaves or leaves far from my reach, but they all are flowering. Would I be able to take cuttings from those and still be able to propagate them even though they lack leaves?

Hello! Is it possible to propagate from a larger wisteria branch so we can start with a larger plant? How about propagating from those long suckers that alwasy shoot out from the base of the tree?
@EasyPeasyGardening

You can air layer a larger branch. I have a series of videos on air layering. You can also grow from suckers but if the plant was grafted, it will not work
