In this Witcher 3, Drew talks about happy endings.
Released on the 19th of May, 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open world, third-person perspective videogame in which players control Geralt of Rivia. The game is based on The Witcher series of fantasy novels written by Polish Author, Andrzej Sapkowski. The main story follows Geralt searching for his missing adopted daughter, named Ciri. She is fleeing from an otherworldly force who are determined to find her and use her powers for themselves. During the game, players will interact with a variety of fleshed out characters, using a variety of tactics to complete side quests, developing their skills as they acquire more experience points. The gear Geralt uses can also be changed by players purchasing new items and using in-game materials to forge from scratch. The main plot has multiple endings, all of which are determined by the player's choices at various points throughout the videogame. The Witcher 3 is available on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Microsoft Windows.

@@damndanielrealass8004 Situations like those in witcher wether you like it or not are actually true. And the said "lesser evil" is sometimes "What's the most moral thing to do" in a sitaution where you're under pressure. Or a lot of times it was hard for me to side with a friend of another in an argument where it seemed both are right yet wrong at the same time. Yes in witcher the stiautions are more extreme and involve killing yet we're not in the medieval age. There are plenty of situations in witcher where a person with good will does something that's not so good, or plenty of cases where it's clear what is bad and what is good moraly speaking. It mirrors life where I used to like and belive the fact that everything can be easily determined, as in I can say wether something is good or bad in the end, but in time I saw things are not so black and white. And in regards Geralt beeing "neutral" that's rarely in games tbh and in games it's the players choice. Also I love how humans(In the game) hide inside their supposed "black and white" morallity and call even people like Geralt a monster whitout knowing anything, when in truth those people are just hypocrites and love to hide in a simple and understandable world. Just like we live our life pretending everything we do and get is permanent but in the end we still die(And sometimes we even behave like the humans in witcher.) Witcher Imo does an excellent opinion in writing a beautifull comparison to real life and at the same time adding fantasy into the mix. Edit: Sorry for long post, sometimes I talk to much.

Cool, everyone got what they deserved, now what might happen to the fairyland of Toussaint? Anna Henrietta, beloved by her people but tragically murdered by her own sister. will the dream of Toussaint turn into a nightmare or wake up the the cold hard reality of the world? Will the warm sun of Toussaint be fully eclipsed by the black sun of the Alba? will once friends try to take what they want from others like a race of two peoples from long ago? Will a vengeful north seek to eat the land of Toussaint to feed their growing empire Will the warm and beautiful land of toussaint becoming submerged in ice and a biting cold, or burned down into an ashland of corpses and blood Will blood and wine be and taste the same? So many questions, even more answers, maybe we wont get an answer or we might when the Lioness of Cintra pick up where a white wolf left off I don't even know why I decided to make a poem, it just kinda happened. But my point kinda stands, a kingdom or Duchy in this case, without its leader is ripe for opportunity that could shake said Duchy to its core or maybe shatter it. (Goddammit I went poetic again.)

You should have included Dettlaff as a major part of this analysis. He was thought to be major villain of the story by all, even gamers, because of promotional material (smart move CDPR, playing on our fairytale stereotypes and expectation that every game has a major boss battle ), but wasn't. My opinion of him is that he choose to be a monster, to fit in human stereotypes of vampire and non-human as a monster which was a result of his betrayal, lifelong self-hatred (I suspect) and losing a reason to live after said betrayal. VERY similar to Syanna. He even has a line" I intend to live happily ever after". His story absolutely ties with the subject at hand. Maybe you will do part 2 of this video, with Dettlaff and vampiric history of this fabled land. P.s. I really enjoy your content and the way you analyze things. 😊

All things considered id call that a pretty good ending
@Nindrhu

You could say that the happy ending was realistic actually, from a purely emotional standpoint...she'd been through so much, Cyanna probably just wanted an end to her suffering, and one that wasn't laced with pessimism and morbidity. She'd had far too much of that in her life already. Her sister had perhaps the least to do with her banishment and was a child with no power at the time. It's also possible someone told her Cyanna had probably died a long time ago, hence why the Duchess tried to just bury the memory and move on. Add in her nightmare of a husband and leading a whole Duchy by herself I can see why Cyanna drifted away from her day to day thoughts. As for Cyanna, I can see her feelings changing after finally getting to see her long lost sister again, the only person who gave her comfort and love in her life. I guess it all depends on what you see as "realistic" but I think it works either way.

I personally like the "happy" ending, the dutchess may not have gotten what she most likely deserved but her sister had been exiled when she was a child, if that happened to one of my family members I would also be devastated and would repress the memories while I grew up. I also like it because it gives the dutchess a chance to heal the relationship, while yes her sister had been exiled and was shown how knights really act she should still at least give her sister a chance, think of it like this: A villain spares you but still kills everyone, later on, the villain honestly asks for forgiveness and tries to change his or her ways. Why should you not spare them, yes they may have killed people but they are now asking to change. if you say no then maybe they'll kill more people if you say yes then they'll try to fix the problem they made and become a better person. You don't have to agree with me but hat's my thoughts on the matter.

First off, I love your videos! I hate to disagree with you here though. Yes, in this world, anger, revenge, and bad endings are the norm, but what is missing from this video is the redemption of Geralt as The Butcher of Blavikin. In the short story, The Lesser Evil, Geralt fails to convince Renfri, a woman born under the same moon and suffer the same abuse, to cease her desire for revenge against Stregabor, forcing him into the events that lead to his cursed title. In the last chapter of Geralts story in the games, he gets the opportunity to make things right by leading Cyanna on a better path, one of forgiveness. I also, love the similarities between Renfri and Cyanna, the former a representation of Snow White with her band of seven mercenaries rumored to be Dwarves and the latter stuck in an illusion, similar to Stregabor's castle, chock full of other references to fairy tales.

Which is the canon ending? The one you experienced. It's really that simple, unless the next game confirms one ending or another (and CD Project Red's "Thank you" video seems to have several ideas about what characters survived). I thought it made sense that the sisters would rebuild their relationship, both realizing what they had done and failed to do (especially since Detlaff was manipulated by Sylvia).
@DraxisTheDragon

Bit late for that, but I have found you few weeks ago. I think you arenot right in this particular "ending". Slavic mythology (and therefore Witcher games) is dark as hell itself. But that "good"ending (ladies still breathing) is what you need in every mythology, no dark or not... Hope. Tah is in slavic, greek or german mythology. That is one candle in every dark corner, that means it will have future. Even if that future is grim and dark. And I can see that in ending, when sisters are alive. All nice graphic endings aside. It will cost many lifes in few years... Little sister was not aware of bad things done to her sibling and even if the older one tried to forgive, she won't forgot. It is hope, but it leads to more brutal "years to come"... And yes Geralt is just meaningless messanger of destiny (or whatever), but his good actions (at least we saw) brought more pain in long run ( in games it's your choice, but in books it is not). So reunion is very nice ending to one story, but history might have other opinon. This is best part of any wither game narrative. you will try to stay neutral just to make things even worse (in books he probably succeeded few times :P ) Anyway, I understand your poind, just do not agree with your judgement :)

I like the “good” ending for one simple reason: bookends. One of Geralt’s earliest adventures is the story of him failing to redeem Renfri and being forced to stop her. I like the idea that his final adventure is also him trying to save someone afflicted by the curse of the black sun. But this time, Geralt succeeds. Reminds me of Andrew Garfield getting the chance to save MJ in No Way Home. A small moment of redemption from a tragedy long ago and a nice bookend to Geralt’s story.

@Hynotama

You say that Silvia Anna would not heal her wounds and abandonment issues with a single embrace, and you are partially right. It takes much more to recover from betrayal. But it's not impossible for her to give up revenge. There are people who crumble and have their resolve undone at the slightest sign of love. Just think how many men give up divorce and end up reconciling after their wives cheat on them and betray their love. So it's actually fairly possible that Sianna would unravel upon feeling a loving embrace from her sister. There's one other thing. While Sianna was plotting her revenge, she didn't interact with Anna Henrietta as two sisters would, so Sianna had no reason to believe that Annarietta regretted her past. Once she saw Annarietta express her feelings so sincerely, it may have been the last drop that filled Sianna's proverbial glass with hope for the future and a desire for a relationship with her sister that surpassed her desire for revenge. After all, it is said that those who live in darkness are the ones who see the light most clearly. That one embrace could have been more significant to Sianna than it appeared at face value. It was her light in the tunnel. Which makes sense considering that she didn't judge the situation logically as we do. She was indeed very emotional about it. She cared about Annarietta. That is exactly why the betrayal and abandonment hurt, but it could have also been why she would choose forgiveness.

Heart and Stone & Blood and Wine are legit some of the most awesome DLC content available for any game. Me as someone who baught the game on the next-gen update wanted to play the whole game. And i fucking loved it. Took a while, especially when I wanted to do every goddamn sidenets available lol. But the game itself is just magnificent. The DLC’s take it to a whole new realm of immersion and awesomeness. H&S made a awesome story with unforgetable characters, especially goddamn Gaunter O’Dimm. B&W though just took the atmosphere, fantasy and worldbuilding of the Witcher universe to a whole new level in my eyes, from someone who hasn’t gotten around to reading any of the books, but that is a priority on my to-do list so no worries. Toussaint is just absolutely stunning, and it feels like it could be its own damn game due to the quality of the whole expansion.

Both endings are good, and the "Good ending" relies on something extremely powerful IRL : forgiveness. True forgiveness can erase any rancor, and in this case, family bounds, even after such events, can help toward it. The most important scene on which the entire ending relies (Syanna and Geralt speech) explains it extremely well. Also, I don't think Geralt, who showed himself an "expert" in family conflicts during the entire game, would have mistaken himself so hardly on Syanna and her will of revenge. After all, she was raised like a princess would be raised but with permanent grieve. So Syanna is no common folk, she's a noble and as a more educated being she will act more on reason rather than pure feelings

I always found my favorite ending of the available options to be the one in which all three of the core trio die. It always felt incredibly shallow to kill Detlaff and save Anna Henrietta. Though her emotional stake is understandable, she essentially sacrifices her adoring subjects to save a sister that has been exposed as a plotter (with or without good explanation for being that way). I think one of the biggest delusions The Witcher universe shatters is that of the just ruler. It reveals that, given the right stimuli, even the most beloved ruler can become a self-serving, power abusing monster.

If ever a person had justification to despise a place, it's gotta be Geralt and Toussaint. Every time he ends up there, all of his friends die.

Up until yesterday on my 8th playthrough, i had no idea that you could get a happy ending with the sisters. I just assumed that Syanna killed Anna Henrietta, i genuinely thought that what was meant to happen, it's nice to still be finding things ive not seem before.
@andreashun

Nice video, but you are wrong, there are three possible endings, not two. And the one you ignored is the most realistic in my opinion and maybe also according to your arguments. Syanna gets killed by the higher vampire (Detlaff) she chose to manipulate, because he loved her and feels (rightfully) betrayed by her. Anna Henrietta blames the Witcher who gets imprisoned for a while, and she mourns for her sister (only she knows if her grief is real or just because it's expected from her) and all of Toussaint mourns with her, and loves it's duchess even more than before. Geralt has no longer good standings with Anna Henrietta but keeps his vineyard after he is released, he can finally rest and enjoy life together with whoever visits him (poor you if it's Dandelion ;)). Regis might or might not have to flee, depending on your choice regarding Detlaff. This is the third and probably most realistic ending, weird that you not even mentioned it, or Detlaff, who plays a crucial role in all this.

When I played Blood and Vine recently, I had to think over which ending (the one that both sisters survive or the one where I spare Detlaff) for more than an hour. Neither of them are morally superior to the other (you either let a person, that is "evil" because how she was raised up, die or you kill a vampire that is evil because he was abused by that person...). And believe me I felt wrong when I fought Detlaff. In same cases, killing all 3 of them may feel good. Detlaff dies because he attack the city, Syanna for abusing him and Anna Henryeta for letting it all happen (She maybe was too young back then, but she could as well let Detlaff have Syanna after what she's done. She was acting as if nobody else had the right to punish Syanna, damn that high eggo.)

Knights only abused Syanna once she tried to escape, most likely punishing her for it to ensure she will not try to escape again.

Imo the true ending is the one where Sianna is killed by Detlaff, the Detlaff is killed by Geralt. Because that is the ending most accurate to how the canon version of Geralt would react to these events and in particular, to Sianna. Canon Geralt wouldn't go out of his way to get the two sisters to forgive each other, nor would he care about the feelings of one dutchess against an entire town that had just been butchered. He would do the thing that brings both guilty parties to justice, which would result in both Sianna and Detlaff's deaths.

Not gonna lie. I spent almost an entire year playing the Witcher 3. Bought both DLC. By the time I 100% the base game and searched every nook and craney on the map, found all the different schools of gear, also read some of the books....I was burnt on Witcher. I never got around to the DLC. Been a few years now. Think it's time I revisit Geralt and company.

I've been like that. I bought the game during a christmass sale and played it until before the battle at Kaer Morhen. Right as I would have started that, I just couldn't continue. It took me over a year to pick the game up again, but I did not regret it. Hearths of stone is the best story I witnessed in video games (in my opinion of course). I did not like Blood and wine that much, but it still one of the best dlc out there. If you have the time, the dlcs are diffinetly worth the play. You wont regret it.

I think you misunderstood the Good Ending. That Embrace was not everything being forgiven and forgotten, It was the beginning of the healing process and it’s a process that will probably take years to fully repair the relationship between the Sisters. The Bad Ending has its merits as a Shakespearean Tragedy, But it is not better than the Good Ending because of that.

I cried several times during video games. Some games made me cry more than once over the same thing. And it wasn't because that something was sad, I cried of happiness too. It doesn't matter how young/old you are. It's just how much your emotions show and people tell me I'm almost emotionless.

I got my perfect Witcher ending, Radovid was assassinated so mages and non humans were allowed to live freely, the North made a peace treaty with Nilfgaard and became a sovereign state, Ciri became a witcher, I didn’t romance Triss or Yen (I didn’t do The Last Wish quest so I didn’t break Yen’s heart either) and for hearts of stone I defeated mirror master and blood and wine I got the happy ending and then my daughter Ciri came to live with me at my Vineyard, and lore wise since I never broke the Djinns wish, Geralt and Yen are still romantically involved. There’s hardly any downsides to my ending.

All these comments about choosing between two evils or not choosing at all... Get this - imagine for a second that you ARE Geralt. You do not have any solutions on how to get a particular ending. That way you DO NOT choose if you save Syanna from Dethlaff - the ribbon protects her, but would you know it if you did not have any walkthrough? In that scenario, Geralt cannot choose to kill or save Dettlaff, Dettlaff makes that choice for him and suffers the consequences. That is the point of that famous quote. Geralt does not choose neither of the evils, it is actions of others that lead to smaller or greater evil.

The problem there chief....The duchess isn't loved by all. They explain why the last murder being her would've fit and no one would've thought it was off with all the other murders. This is a known thing. She even decides to do so with Geralt in front of her people. The last virtue is compassion and on more than one occasion she showed a severe lack of it. She even thought her people dying was a worthwhile price to soothe her guilty conscience and not hand over her sister.
@soleo2783
@soleo2783 3 года назад
They would have believed because they were already convinced the OTHER murders were justified. And sure, the duchess isn't loved by literally everyone, but if she dies geralt can't even buy flowers for her grave because they just ran out of flowers, she is obviously a very respected ruler, specially compared to the other rulers we meet in the game.

Annrietta kinda was a child when she stayed quite about the prank and after she became the duchess she sent people everywhere to look for Syanna but Syanna didn't wish to be found if she had she wouldn't have suffered as much in exile. Annrietta made a mistake but I don't think she deserves to die for it. Also I wouldn't call having them reconcile is a very happy ending. Detlaff was killed even though he was tricked, manipulated and betrayed. Regis is an outcast by his own kind, who would come after his life if he is nearby. I think the choice is between a bad and a bittersweet ending. Edit: I now know that if Geralt lets Syanna get killed he gets thrown in jail by Annrietta despite saving the city. Annrietta is a nepotizing, selfish and spoiled brat. Now I actually think the best ending is letting all 3 die since all 3 are bad with Detlaff the least evil one. P.S I just finished reading the story of the golden dragon from the second book. It was pretty good and now I understand why the gwent card Villentretenmerth acts that way when destroyed. :)

She should have made a public proclaimation-denouncing her parents' actions and welcoming her sister home-regardless of whether she found Syanna. It would be the right thing to do, and would probably have worked better.
@LordpittCZ

It really matters on the angle you look at it. Some people may say it has a bad, bittersweet and a happy ending. Some people feel more like it has 2 bittersweet endings and one really sad, but it may feel as the morally correct one.

Most of the stories in (I don’t know how to spell the name but the place in this video) often have both a good and bad endings, and it’s even more likely that you get the bad endings with the amount of difficulty it takes to finish some of these quests. I think an excellent example is the spotted wight that we find. It’s more likely that you would just kill the spotted wight then really try to figure out the riddle. The missions are slightly more difficult than others, and the main missions don’t really end completely happily no matter which ending.
@kaimagnus5760
@kaimagnus5760 5 лет назад
Gerolt acknowledges the curse as soon as he gets there though. And he's know for going out of his way to break a curse. So I think he would have tried to save the wight first and only resorted to killing it as a last resort.

I like this but I do want to mention something. Things that end off like that, two warring people embrace and it's implied that makes peace? Yeah, it's not just a hug that does it and it rarely ever is, that's just the START of a reconciliation or rebuilding and I honestly can't think of much that actually tries to tell you otherwise

Detlaff is an incredibly dangerous monster without a single shred of humanity, an unappologetic danger, him dying whether syanna dies or not is the only right thing to do. what he does to beauclair and its people just to get "closure" on whether syanna really used him is pure insanity. detlaff might be "cool" so you might not want to kill him and it is tragic that regis is shunned from his people because he assists you. but even regis knows its the right thing to do. lets be honest hes one of the wisest philosophical characters in the witcher universe. syanna was raped beaten and thrown away left for dead as a child. she used someone to get unhealthy revenge on the men that beat her, raped her and took her away. yes it was wrong to want her sister dead too especially when anna *did* look for syanna and tried to bring her back syanna is a sad character with a lot of nuance who deserves punishment and comeuppance detlaff is an uncontrolable, unreasonable, dangerous monster.

Ah, but the happy ending only happens because Geralt is compassionate and is empathetic with someone who was misjudged and mistreated, which is something that would definitely happen as multiple times in the games and the books canonically Geralt has defended, sympathised and empathised with misjudged and mistreated outcasts

In my opinion, the Duchess is a duchebag. That's right, she couldn't do anything when she was younger, but I think the first thing Syanna would've told her if her sister listened would be how the knights abused her and how she found herself the way she was. If she had any dignity and felt any sort of compassion to her sister, she'd do as little as publicly apologize and reveal that the knights actually deserved what they got. I also don't think Syanna is at fault for anything she did. As a little girl, she was saved and adopted by bandits, to follow the only people who showed her kindness and mercy was what most people would do, especially that she was just a child.
