American of Scottish descent here. I've become very interested in witchcraft the past few years and would love to see the lands and the faith my ancestors came from. Going to Scotland one day is my goal, and I hope to stay there quite a while. Anyway, I'm rambling. Lovely video!
I find it fascinating how so many people think Satan has something to do with Witchcraft. I know many Witches saw the Christian devil figure as being opposed to the church so they viewed that thing as a symbol against the people that were trying to change their beliefs, which is why some of them were thought to have adopted that devil figure as a god or something akin to that. But overall I thought that the majority of Witches were not into Satanism, that the idea of Witches associated with Satan was a Christian thing that was invented to persecute people that shared a different faith. I thought most Witchcraft was around much longer than Christianity was, given that the world was mostly Matriarchal for a long time before certain religions stared spreading a more patriarchal idea. I could be wrong though.

timothypeden3516, Keep in mind that Christians say that "Gargoyles" are demonic and of Satan. You know, the gargoyles that adorn many of the old time (Catholic/Christian) Abby's. In other words, the figures that once were meant to keep demons away from the "Church buildings" are now considered demons (according to Christians).

@@Johnmountainstone it was largely women and so misogynistic violence is correct. But also it was broadly a massive, sustained attack on the working class over 3 centuries, so while it was mostly women who were targeted, people of any gender could also be targeted, not just women or men.

Very pleasant video. well described, well presented. I'm disappointed that this (like all these mini documentaries) is actually about wicca more so than witchcraft. So many videos on youtube are misleading in this way. But it's nice to see any practice followed outside the small sad pockets here in the U.S. so I guess beggars can't be choosers.

There is a book that describes the history of deployment of witchtrials as part of British colonialism on foreign lands, but of course Scotland joined in with that colonising project, sadly, after Scotland's own attempt to colonise (the Darien scheme) wax thwarted. King James I & VI of Scotland and England brought witchtrials to the British isles, first to Scotland.
