Nice to see a GT 500 that someone has ACTUALLY driven and enjoyed! For a car with 210,000 miles on it, It looks like most of those were highway by the way the body and the undercarriage look. I'd love to see a follow up video on the condition of the engine and supercharger with that many miles on it.

@@firedemon2166 I always find it astounding how much rust a lot of cars in central and northern North America have. One of my cars is a 23 year old Toyota, and it has nothing but a few patches of mild surface rust on the underside even after two decades of sitting in the driveway and being driven daily with maybe a bucket of soapy water thrown at it every few months if it's lucky. Really haven't had a problem with any car rusting post 1990.

For me when the tires need replacement I think about keeping the car and fixing all the minor issues including tires or replacing the car all completely and factor in the money I would have spent in repairs on the old vehicle Tires, injectors, spark plugs, brakes and rotors, new headlights, transmission flush, wheel bearings, bushings and suspension. Etc.
@evoman44
@evoman44 5 месяцев назад
The first car I bought with my own money had a new set of tires. Problem was that it was the cheapest tires available for 13" wheels that the previous owner had bought just so that it could pass the state inspection. However those tires were so cheap that they could not hold a corner a decent speed well. Which led to me having two close calls when the tires gave out on two turns. The last incident was the last straw that led me to replacing all the tires with the best set I could find in a 13" size. Found a good set from Costco at the time that served me and my spirited driving well for the time I had the car.
@MathewPollard-vj4uq

@@evoman44 Buying anything less than the best tires is always a bad value. Tires are the #1 safety and performance part on any vehicle. By the time you mount and balance tires the cost between the best and the worst isn't that much. The life you save is likely to be your own or someone you care about.

Those look like Ford Performance sway bars that are made for Ford by Eibach and are painted blue instead of red. There should be a Ford logo on them. You just need to replace the polyurethane bushings. The ones used in those bars are made by Energy Suspension. You can buy the bushing kit and silicone grease. The person who had the car probably did not use silicone grease on them which would have degraded the polyurethane bushings. Have you tried filling them with grease? They seem to be bone dry now. These bushings will get noisy if they are not greased through the fittings.

You might want to consider a new alternator, the factory spec wasn't really rated for 5.4 SC and I had to replace them several times in a year until I got an upgraded model. Car would give little warning before the battery died from failed alternator.
@marko7843
@marko7843 5 месяцев назад
In my case, there was a ground cable that seemed to be tight to the engine block because of corrosion, but it wasn't really. I bought two or three alternators before I found the problem. After that, no new alternators...
@midnight347
@midnight347 5 месяцев назад
Nations is where it's at they have a killer 270 Amp alt for these that changes the actual style of alternator from the factory 6g (crap) to the large case Denso style like 2010 up mustangs got factory. The problem is the style alternator itself. Getting a factory 6g style high output is not the answer. You gotta also change the style of alternator and nations makes one that is a bolt on 270 Amp unit and its great. I went ahead and did the alternator on my 07 before the factory one even failed because I learned from others. People who buy stock replacements go through them like crazy even if you get a stock style 6g ho alternator same thing the 6g style is the issue with them. Get rid of that for the nation's and no more problems. That also covers you if you turn higher than 6200 rpm which wears out regular alternators that came keep up in that range. 6500 is max safe rpm anyways on these with a stock bottom end they have a long stroke and don't like revs much but if you abide by that and give it as much octane as you can these things are stout and live at big power levels even being beat on long as you maintain it properly.

The astonishing thing is that a Shelby GT 500 made it to 200,000 miles. In fact I'm surprised it made to over 100,000 miles, not because they're crappy cars, it's because these Mustangs are usually abused to the point they're blown up, or wrecked.

Good move with the Mcleod clutch related parts. I have a fiiend who also had a GT500, same year, and he went through several different clutches and did not ever find anything as nice as the original clutch, to include when usinf oem replacement pats. He eventually bit the bullet and went with a McLeod Clutch and related parts in. From that point forward he was once again thrilled as he had no more slipping clutch issues, and the clutch mechanism worked smoothly and properly.

I had zero issues with it running properly, but did have the sparkplug and exhaust manifold issues that had to be corrected. It was a great truck until the frame rot made it unsafe to keep driving. Midwest winters and thin steel boxed frames just don't go together. The truck was outwardly in beautiful condition, even the leather interior looked new after 13 years and 158000 miles. That engine was a failure to so many buyers, but I got a good one, and still kind of miss that truck.

Over 10 years ago I read a story about a lady that was a travelling salesperson and she had over 670,000 miles on a 1988 GT that she bought new and had done nothing but routine maintenance on it. You call even search 1 million mile Elantra on RU-vid and find the story of another woman who put over 1 million miles on a 2013 Elantra! Hyundai even gave her a new car. My first video of yours that I've had the pleasure of watching. I was shocked to see the car I had in High School, a 66 Malibu 4-door hardtop! It had a 283 with a 4 barrel carb. Same color too. Those things are rare

Usually diaphragm clutches are fairly easy to push. Long and Borg & Beck are harder.

SPEC sells clutch kits rated from 1-5. Rating 3 and up are meant to be stiff but they really hook.

I'm surprised that the sway bar bushings are worn out, because those bars are from Steeda and the bushings are polyurethane. I guess everything has a lifespan. Keep up the great work, Mr. Wizard.

The hard polymer aftermarket sway bar "performance" bushings are your problem. Recommend putting stock bushings back in.
@newfie-dean5803
@newfie-dean5803 5 месяцев назад
They are polyurethane bushings and give you way better handling. The bushings are from Energy Suspension and you need to grease them through the fittings with silicone grease. If you grease them using the right grease (silicone) they will last way longer than the rubber ones. Those bars are Ford Performance ones made by Eibach for Ford.

It would be interesting to see what horsepower and torque gain to the wheels is gained by a decent clutch. That last dyno pull likely finished off the old one with lots of slippage.

The Shelby's originally came out with dual clutch setup but people were saying they were to stiff for street use and would cause them to burn up,i could see why it was replaced and someone put a single clutch system in. Also,the driveshaft is garbage factory, the two shafts with the bearing in the center had a tendency to fail,i swapped mine out with a one piece aluminum drivershaft.The last thing,the suspension on those car's are not the best,i got a 2011 performance pack and i still had to swap out everything in the rear with all tubular which is 10 time's better on handing.Those motor where basically a ford gt motor from the supercar,just one mid engine and the other not.

This is what you tend to find on a performance car that has driven by drivers that should never be allowed behind the wheel of one. Once it is finished it will be clunk free, and you won't have sore legs with the clutch.

That car is worth the money invested and is probably more reliable than anything brand new today. Great looking car and my personal favorite body style. I am just like you too I can't stand a vehicle that does not drive right. I have to have perform as it should.

Wizard, looks the front and rear sway bars are Steeda aftermarket sway bars judging from the blue bars and the grease fittings on the bushing mounts. You should be able to buy the replacement mount bushings from them.

They look to be the Ford Performance ones as I have the same bars on an 06 GT. They are actually made by Eibach for Ford and the only difference is the Ford ones are painted blue instead of red. And the Ford ones are less expensive for the exact same thing.

That mustang with 600 horsepower and over 200k miles, that is very reliable. A Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes… with that much miles on it will have some serious mechanical issues. Low but behold, sometimes cheaper is better.

This GT500 suspension wise is in a similar situation that my 2006 GT was in when I got it at 131k, the wheel hop in the rear was terrible, it felt like the whole rear axle was going to come out from under the car with even a hint of wheelspin, but engine and drivetrain were solid, ended up replacing every single bushing except the sway bar bushings because they were still good and the difference was night and day, so much more predictable over bumps and no more clunks

I own a 2016 Ford Escape Titanium. It has 140000km on it. I have redone the entire front end. It only needed a few things but my way of thinking is if a few parts are wore out the others are not far behind. And I only want to pay for a wheel alignment once. But the Ford Stealership can not get the steering wheel dead on. It has been back 2 other times because the steering wheel being off just a slight bit drives me nuts. I guess the next thing is to calibrate the steering angle sensor using my Autel. I do not know what else to do.

Yeah, I prefer to get complete assemblies for trailing arms, control arms etc, also. I just figure the tooling and giant press at the Moog factory is a lot better than anything I do in the garage.

That old clutch looks like a stage 3 carbon metallic clutch. It’s pretty much only good for drag racing and is like an on or off switch. The previous owner was probably driving it like a street clutch and slipping too much in traffic hence the material and flywheel wear.

The Tremec shifters are excellent from the factory. I have a 2004 Mach 1 with the 5-speen Tremec TR3650, 129K miles. Still shifts like new; even still running the original clutch.
