It has an option now to change the phone number without sending code to the old number, instead send it to the email

Try again. I changed my text to, ''I cannot access my old phone number'' and they made me provide more info about my account such as registered device, date of creation of account, etc

But I found a way to protect it! I activated the 2FA security method requiring every time I log in, an extra code from my email must be confirmed. So they wouldn’t be able to log in only by using the code they receive by text

It doesn't work, I have my email updated in the account but when trying to change or unlink the phone number. The only option available is to verify by the current phone number.

If you are logged into your account what worked for me was first linking my email (since I made the account just using my phone number) and then just unlinking my old phone number and now I can log in using my email
