You can artificially increase your genes pool by increasing the natural mutation rate of plants. It's call mutation breeding, and it can be achieve by serval methods, on of them is irradiation. There was serval varieties of plant that was develops in atomic gardens, using radioactivity.

It's interesting that plants mutate more quickly after experiencing radiation damage . That would be precisely the response that would allow the plant's offspring to survive in an environment radically altered by radioactivity.
