Lisa Tamati takes you on a Himalayan adventure!
The worlds' highest running race - known as La Ultra - The High is a 222km non stop running race over the two highest motorable mountain passes in the world.
Held in the Indian region of Ladakh (translated "The land of high passes") is a region in Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that currently extends from the Kunlun mountain range to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet.
In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but since the Chinese authorities closed the borders with Tibet and Central Asia in the 1960s, international trade has dwindled but the Indian military maintains a strong hold there.
Every year this incredibly tough ultra marathon is held. This is a documentary following Lisa Tamati racing it in its second year of running.
The first year only one man, Mark Cockbain, managed to finish and the other two competitors and some of the crew all ended up in hospital with altitude related problems
This race sees the competitors go up twice within a very short time space to altitudes over 5,700m, climbing over the infamous Kardung La and Tanglang La passes.
Oxygen levels up there are around 30% of what they are at sea level making it extremely tough to get enough oxygen to run.
The terrain is mountainous, the rugged single lane roads frequented by military convoys spewing unfiltered diesel into the mountain air add to the difficulties.
The competitors have extremes of temperature to deal with from 40 degrees celsius in the valleys to -3 in the mountains. This makes for slow going and there is more walking and running but don't underestimate how tough this is
Before Lisa even started she had a brain concussion to deal with a ripped ligaments on her left ankle ten weeks prior to going. Meaning she is undertrained and not well and during the race Lisa faces asthma attacks, heat exhaustion, severe altitude related problems, snow storms and treacherous roads to try and be the first woman to conquer this race.
She ends up second behind the incredible Sharon Gayter from England but this 53hr and 5 minute odyssey will give the viewer a birdseye view on what its like to attempt something this mammoth, to face extreme fatigue, sleep deprivation and fear, altitude and health problems and to overcome and persevere against all odds.
Suffer and celebrate with Lisa on this once in a life time journey!

That was intense! The temperature variance from 41 degrees to sub-zero, combined with the lack of oxygen and sleep. WOW. Had to go to some dark places and dig deep to finish. I have great appreciation for the support crew to help someone achieve their goal. Congrats, Lisa. I know for certain that the unfiltered diesel exhaust fumes spewing forth from all the trucks would finish me off. I HATE diesel fumes as much as second hand cigarette smoke now. The lack of consideration for fellow people is disgusting.

You guys did a great job by pushing your body to limits. Himalayas are totally different ball game. I have spent more than two decades traversing the unknown trails, peaks of Great Himalayas closed for public. These lofty mountains virtually bring any human on earth to his knees in no time. Human body is torn to shreds with piercing cold winds and freezing temperatures in no time. This lesson I learned in just few hours when I set my foot on Himalayas in early eighties when there was no means of evacuation or medical facilities. With passage of years I learned that body can never conquer the mighty Himalayas, it is the prayers and the spirit which takes refuge of Almighty with every step one takes towards unknown one might survive and live to tell stories in future. Next time when you come to leh, come with no worldly paraphernalia and Himalayas will take you in its lap as own child. Remember here no strategy works. Wish you the very best for next Himalayan pilgrimage.

@@Lisa_Tamati yes, I'm a marathon runner. And you are spot on, not everyone can understand it. Glad they succeeded. I was part of a hastily assembled and ill-prepared crew for a rider in the Race Across America and this reminds me that it’s just not responsible to rely on a ram-shackle collection of newbies for an event like this where life may be in the balance. I’m quite surprised an athlete wouldn’t have done more to prepare for and learn about high altitude well ahead of the event.

Very well done Lisa. Are you by chance aware of any suppliments that have been used in India, Nepal, and China to help the body counter the altitude? If so was wondering if you or any runners you know of use them. The reason I ask is becuase I climbed Mt Everest and we used 3 suppliments, 1 to big time help the body to function at extreme altitude, 1 for oxygen retention within the body, and 1 for muscle endurance so we could make good time up and down the mountain.

Lisa, for the Asthma, and the weather, you did great work. You have that high level inner warrior spirit, along with that comes life saving adrenaline to help the body get through extremes. Congrats on the finish. Question in regards to food at the aid stations....do they give you fresh fruit? That is by far, one of the most important foods when doing any long distance race, especially this one with the elevation and temperature change extremes. I will make sure to have fresh fruit on hand at all times in a large cooler when I do this race, or a very similiar race one of the next 2 years. I will also take the everest medicinal suppliment our group used ,when we climbed mt everst earlier this year, courtesy of our mountain sherpas. Thanks for sharing this video Lisa, very uplifting spiritually, to see you accomplish this feat.

Snickers /carbs is not nutritional , and burns off quickly , requiring continuous eating that distracts the runner ."Fat adapation" may be a better option for these guys .
