Our Ecology team brings you exclusive footage of a kiwi chick's tentative first steps into the big wide world. Over five nights, we were fortunate to capture these precious moments before our little chick bravely ventured further afield.
Kiwi chicks, though adorable are vulnerable, facing numerous threats from predators like stoats, weasels, ferrets, and feral cats. 😢 But here's the heartening news - thanks to a dedicated community effort in trapping and predator control across the vast 54,000 hectares of Forest Bridge in New Zealand's upper North Island, our kiwi chicks are not only surviving but thriving, with an increase in population numbers in the past 12 months! 🌳👏
However, another challenge arises from our furry friends. Dogs, intrigued by the scent of kiwi, can unintentionally harm them. So, dear dog owners, let's be cautious. Keep your furry pals on a lead in kiwi-inhabited areas and consider our kiwi dog avoidance training if you're in a kiwi zone with The Forest Bridge Area.
