Wix Sitemap for Google: How to Verify Your Site and Update and Submit Your Sitemap

If you want to start with a solid SEO foundation for your Wix site, you should make sure your sitemap is updated and submitted to Google.
This video is a guide to doing that, along with verifying your Wix site with both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

No you don't. Your sitemap will change automatically when you make changes to your Wix site (like adding pages or related).

Hi Gilbert, this is a very good and fair question. Kind of embarrassing, but I didn't even notice this. It did all begin working though. I just did some research (search query = "why can't my sitemap be fetched wix") and found answers that confirmed this basically means a "pending" status from Search Console. Here's a copied and pasted answer that I found helpful. "The occurrence of couldn't fetch sitemap error is usually due to a bug in Google search console. There is no easy fix for this. In reality, the status is pending and you will have to wait a few moments for the result to come back. Maybe changing your IP address or browser could fix sitemap status couldn't fetch error." Hi there. Your Wix site should automatically create and update your sitemap. You don't need to do anything within Wix. Instead, you just need to submit to Google as shown in the video. Does that make sense? Here's the Wix support article if you're interested: support.wix.com/en/article/submitting-your-sitemap-and-urls-directly-to-search-engines Snippet below: "Every Wix site has a sitemap that updates automatically with your site’s most current information." Oops! I did the lazy way of adding my website to bing and now I can't find my meta tag to copy to wix. Wix only has instructions on adding a site manually like in your video. It doesn't look like I'm verified for Bing on Wix and Bing webmaster is saying I don't need a tag. Will it add me anyway if I wait a while?

Hi there. I'm not sure I follow when you say you did it the "lazy way". Can you clarify that for me? Either way, I think your thought to wait awhile is a good one. I'd give it 24 - 48 hours and then check again.

@@rooted-digital Hi. In your video you say Bing can automate the process of adding your website or you can do it 'the old fashioned way'. I chose the automatic way.

@@mysteryzone28 I see. You chose the option for Bing to pull in your site verification from Google Search Console. What is happening here is that Bing basically looks and sees that your site has been verified by Google and then says "hey, I trust that this person actually does own the site because they've verified it through Google and now I'll allow this person to have that same access in Bing Webmasters." I've never done this myself, but I would expect that it would work. What do you see if you go to www.bing.com/webmasters and log in? You will need to log in with your Google account and you'll need to use the same credentials you had used when you verified with Search Console.

my sitemap is not updating on wix -- despite allowing indexing on all my pages it's only showing three. Know how to manually change?

Hi there. If by manual, you mean something like hard-key the pages you'd like in the sitemap, there's not a way to manually update this. I'd check a couple things: 1.) Check out your sitemap file. For example, here's how I see mine. www.rootandbranchgroup.com/sitemap_index.xml Try adding /sitemap_index.xml or sitemap-index.xml to the end of your homepage URL. When I do that, it looks like I only have 3 files (post-sitemap, page-sitemap, and category-sitemap) but there are multiple URLs within each. Not sure if that's related to your situation, but it's worth checking out. 2.) You can read more about the Wix sitemap file on their support article to see if there might be something else that stands out. support.wix.com/en/article/understanding-your-sites-sitemap-file These things can be finicky and feel frustrating sometimes. Is there a way to manually update the sitemap from Wix @@rooted-digital ? I'm sure that's what he's asking, because I was watching the video hoping for the same info, but you did not address the 'Update' aspect - only verifying and submitting. The default sitemap Wix gives me (like the one you're displaying in the video) does not contain all the pages, so I have to manually submit them on GSC. I created a more comprehensive one using external tools but can't find a way to upload it on Wix (or edit the default one in Wix). Any ideas on how to go about that?

@@TheRuddboyy , hello. There's no way (that I'm aware of, at least) to *manually* update the sitemap file in Wix. At least, if by manually, you mean individually selecting which URLs you'd like to be included in the sitemap. Instead, Wix automatically updates your sitemap when you make changes. In other words, you add a new indexed page --> you get a new URL in sitemap. You add noindex tags to multiple pages --> those URLs are removed from your sitemap Here are a couple Wix support articles that might be relevant. Best wishes. For some reason Google isn't indexing most of my website. It only has 2 pages. 1 home page and one blog. I've submitted it a few months ago, any chance you know what could be wrong with it?

@@rooted-digital my comment keeps getting removed . My site is my whole name. Andyhtu. I'm wondering if it was because I didn't back 2 internal back links. The 2 that had it were the only ones that got indexed. I sent back and added it to some more pages. Will find out Monday if it works. Let me know what you think !

@@AndyHTu Yea, I guess RU-vid can block comments that include a URL. I learned something new today. Anyway, I checked out the site and it looks like the pages are indexable. This is good news! I can check back if I see anything else there. But I think you are 100% on the money that the issue has to do with links. Links are the currency of the internet. When Google sees links, it sees trust and potentially valuable content, and is far more willing to index pages. Sounds like you already know this though based on your comment. : ) I'd think about links in 2 ways: 1.) Links to your site from other sites. These are called "backlinks" and are super valuable. Do you have any clients or partners who could give you a link? I wouldn't hesitate to ask. It can make a big difference. 2.) Links within pages on your site. These "internal links" are important for helping Google understand context on your site. These relationships of linked pages help visitors of course as well, but Google also loves, loves, loves them.
