Well, with my first ever Commander beeing Volo, Guide to Monsters and still beeing one of my favorites, this is an annoying nerf since the deck is entirely about having unique creature types :( It was so fun to find those hidden gems in rrally niche tribes...

Yeah erratas can really mess up a deck like that

Some of these feel worse than others. Nagas becoming snakes feels bad. But the some of them make sense. The biggest issue I see is how it changes creature type identity. It’s like a creature type has an archetype that these cards might not fit. It also doesn’t feel consistent when we have both snakes, serpents and wurms. Which I feel are all closer to snakes then nagas. Then we have nightmares, horrors, shades, spectors and spirits, aren’t those the same thing with a coat of paint? Like brake it up into horrors and spirits add an extra word for cards like Nightmare to be a creature - Horse Horror. It just feels really inconsistent with what is being changed, like maybe they’re only changing these because they don’t want to support those types anymore.

If they don't put a whole essay on the card, it gets misprinted from the factory and has to be clarified, or changes it later they probably wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

I'm with you on the tribal vs kindred. It's not a necessary shift. I also think this is for ease of integration in a way.. Especially with Bloomburrow. We're going to see human like lizards, but they won't be Viashino, even if they look related. I imagine that specifically these 3 types that are changed will be affected in that set

@@mtgghouldude Thanks! Wizards is always thinking ahead and this rule definitely seems in response to future plans, not past situations. Well... The tribal/kindred one is in response to... Personally I like the variety of creature types MtG has, and it is disappointing in a way to see some of them go, but I can see some benefits here. Some decks like Volo mentioned in the comments are going to be hurt by this, and that sucks, but it also opens up new possibilities for old cards in eternal formats that never got enough love. An old Cephalid who has never really been commander playable might find a home in a deck like Kiora now and actually show up at tables instead of just being a card from 20 years ago nobody cares about. I'd prefer that they give new support to older types rather than phase them out, but with as many creature types as they are out there doing that would take years of dedicated effort to slot support into set releases. Try too aggressively to throw bones to less-used creature types too quickly and you risk messing with the flow of revolving formats like Limited and Standard. And I honestly think some of the erratas could work better if they went just a little further. Naga to Snake loses something in the translation, but if they made a humanoid subtype then Nagas could be Snake Humanoids or something like that. Then they still get the Snake synergies without losing what separates them from Snakes.
@mtgghouldude

I agree. We'll move forward and only time can tell how it will reshape the landscape. For better or worse.
@gannonkendrick9343
@gannonkendrick9343 3 месяца назад
These changes almost exclusively benefit all of the tribes involved. It was done to help gameplay. You've lost one or two synergies to gain hundreds or thousands. Do you know how big it is that the few cephalids we had work with Kiora and cards like Whelming Wave now? That naga can go in snake tribal? Feels like you're treating this as though they removed the cards from the game when that isn't the case. It was two words at most to make these cards more playable than they were. Still doesn't change the fact that they printed detective cards for one set only, but it's a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned. Also plural of octopus isn't really octopi. It's octopuses. The word is Greek, not Latin.
@mtgghouldude
@mtgghouldude 3 месяца назад
First of all, I'm from the South, so I greatly appreciate the correction on the proper plural use of octopus. And second thank you for leaving such a well thought out and detailed comment! I based my opinion in the video as if it were more of a loss to nostalgia. I cannot argue that the synergies gained heavily outweigh the loss due to the errata. And have no doubts that this could in fact be good for the game. I appreciate the time and energy it took for you to make such a great and interactive comment and if you do decide to stick with the channel, I can't wait to see more great interesting opinions!

I think its swapping from Tribal because the word Tribal in magic invokes solely a race... whereas a tribe can actually include anyone/anything accepted into the tribe. That said I think having Tribal or Kindred as a card-type in general is just redundant and pointless... how is "Kindred/Tribal Artifact - Eldrazi" any different from just saying "Artifact - Eldrazi" other than being a waste of text... But I do really like that they are crunching and refining the creature types, there are way too many useless creature types, like how is Berserker, Barbarian, Mercenary, Ranger, and how they depict every Monk not just a Warrior? Do we really need a distinction for Survivor, Peasant, Nomad, Assassin, Rebel, Coward, Serf, Bard, Performer, Worker, Employee!!? Viashino being one of my favorites I don't mind if they are "Lizard" as long as the more specialized names like Moloch, Viashino, Iguanar, Krasis, and etc appear in the names or flavor-text now and then.
@mtgghouldude
@mtgghouldude 3 месяца назад
I can agree. They have diversified down to occupation and living status which for me is too far and some types are so close to being the same thing it's ridiculous. Moving away from making every creature an "everything" creature would really help.
@DigitalinDaniel
@DigitalinDaniel 3 месяца назад
@@mtgghouldude They're also adding more types which is going the wrong direction in my opinion. I never needed Phyrexian to know which creatures were Phyrexians and it really changed nothing... they've recently added Mole which I believe every Mole in the game could just be Beast. Warlock, Bard, Tiefling, and Ranger just feels like pandering to the D&D players... why Tiefling wouldn't just be Devil or Demon when needed, and how Warlock would be anything other than Wizard or Shaman is just strange. Reminds me of how they tried making Spellshaper work for so long before just realizing that's a Wizard. :') Or what's really funny is they refuse to use Witch as a type because it's offensive... yet they use the word Witch in names and make it a Shaman or Warlock when that's literally the offensive connotation of witches and shamans that they are trying to avoid.
@mtgghouldude
@mtgghouldude 3 месяца назад
I feel like conventional naming for creature types is only going to get more diverse and always seem like eggshells to navigate so they don't veer towards upsetting anyone.

I think taking off types like cephalids and vishano that are mtg original types is a bit weird, I’m not super offended by it but it’s really- weird and unnecessary almost? Also taking off naga feels really weird, like that’s a very specific type of creature that makes sense to have its own type, especially since the types they got switched to are ones that already could be their own thing like how Jasper Flint is a Lizard but not a vishano

What bugs me most about this is that it just makes the game more annoying to play. "This card says this, but it is actually that." On a digital format where they can just change a string value? Sure, but you can't change paper cards. They should start a service where we can send them cards that were errata'd and they would send you back ones with the "correct" text. At the very least, the annoyance from it would probably stop them from errata'ing so much 😂

Would be a great idea to have a super low power set released to get cards into players hands of cards that had changes made to them. Call it Errata Masters 🧐

The type changed for different type isn’t too confusing IMO. Nagas are a kind of snake and simile for the others. But the addition of cat to a bunch of cards that aren’t clearly cats, now that I expect to breed more confusion.
@AlexOvTheAbyss
@AlexOvTheAbyss 3 месяца назад
@@username4835 Yeah, some make sense, but a few are kinda odd. Was going through cards for a deck yesterday when I noticed Sidisi, Undead Vizier was a (Zombie) Naga. Nothing in that art would make me think "snake" lol. The cat thing is rather weird. Maybe it was to make up for removing cat from the Rakshasa cards somehow? Which that one still kinda confuses me. If they wanted to align more with Hindu mythology, why did they only remove Cat and not add Shapeshifter? Rakshasa were demons with the ability to shapeshift.

They errataed viashinos and nagas out of existence but why not minotour into ox? merfolk into fish, dinosaur into birds. heck, dogs into wolf. This is a disrespect for the cultural heritage from where nagas came from, and from magic's own legacy, viashinos and cephalids were dope.

It's a misunderstanding. It won't remove Cephalids from the game. They just count as Octopi for practical reasons. Just like Leonin are Cat creatures with other types like Cleric and such. It will only make things better. Flavor text and naming conventions can make sure we know when a lizard is just a lizard or if it's a Viashino, etc.

As a older player i like when the viashino and cephalids get love more than changed. I like that you get more access to old cards but viashinos are literally a mtg only thing. I like weird tribal decks and i run zirilan and my brother uses hivis against me because i love dragons. I guess what im getting at is it feels like a death to the old stories... like before you would use creative writing to bring back a odd creature type and give them shine unstead of pumping out a billion sets for money and not really caring about the lore and stories behind the sets. Maybe im in the wrong because they could make more viashinos and call them viashinos but then just lizard their type so ? I just feel like money comes before storytelling anymore and the books meant a lot to us before. Chainers Torment is still one of my favorite books ever. But i sneered at planes walkers and gods and now use both so... the death of nostalgia is just weird sometimes. The cephalid emporer and empresses are going to reign havoc with the deep sea decks. Scary to add control bounce and tap board effects to decks that are usually only held at bay by wipes and chump blockers since hard to get them trample but might just change them up as they already had access to green so maybe more monocolor powrr...? I cant afford new cards anyway so i just cherry pick after price drops at this point anyway haha.
