I was born in Dunkirk and lived in the area until I was 9 years old. I've lived all over the country since then, but there was something about Irv Weinstein and Eyewitness News at 11 that always stuck with me throughout the years. Probably because my grandparents watched it every night. It became the thing that represented 'home' to me. Thanks for posting this - brings back a lot of memories. Especially that great intro.
This brings back memories. Irv Weinstein at 11. After the news, on Friday night was the scary movie. My mother used to let us stay up and watch it with her. I'm from Toronto, but every Friday night we watched WKBW channel 7 Eyewitness News, then the scary movie. Good memories of a simpler time.
Thank you for sharing this. I am a native of western N.Y and though I don't live there anymore, the voices in this tape are ingrained in my memories. I am taken back thirty years or more as soon as it starts. Wonderful.
Ahh, the old number '7' with the serifs still intact. And before Irv moved to the 6 o'clock hour. He had a great incisive delivery. I used to watch this late Friday nights. It was long before Nightline and they aired Fright Night Theater. Thank you for the upload.
I was an "Irv watcher" as well. Friday night's in the 70's, it was the "Late Show" that followed, which was their weekly horror movie. Irv would often chuckle when reading the movies' title.
Gotta think what was happening or not at the time in pop culture: No one had heard of Madonna, and Michael Jackson was still thought of by most people as the kid from the Jackson 5, Oprah who?, Culture Club was all the rage, Disco was dead, AIDS hadn't even been given that name yet, nor had anyone heard of it, No one thought that urban poetry called Rap would go anywhere, Asteroids was the hottest video game around and you loaded a PC with software by pressing play on a tape deck.
Also..Godbless You Irv !! I watched you w my parents n w i moved out. Miss your news. You were very on point. One of the Greatest broadcasters EVER!! ✌
My brother and I would jokingly say its 11 o'clock do you know where our parents are? They were always out playing their floor stomping music in parts of Wyoming county til all hours of the night
I'd say about 84 or 85... went to Fresno, and then came back to Buffalo... on channel 2, and then on 4, where he's been for the last nearly 20 years...
WOW! MEMORIES.... The names, the faces, the theme song! Also.... * That car accident in the beginning; DAMN! "Fatal" is right....you'd have to be Superman to survive THAT! Not even a seat belt could save you! I'd hate to be the Mr. Cortez's family or the EMT's (though it's possible there was a 'Jaws of Life' during the attempted rescue. Since he was rushed to the hospital, he may have been barely alive when they first showed up). Cheesily cool graphic to open the report though....The weird Skull-Road! * That bit about the Challenger....Brought to you by "Harsher In Hindsight Theater"! * I wonder if they ever caught those three goons?
Notice that he pronounces his name like WINE-STINE in this clip? Not sure when people started pronouncing all the --stein names like --STEEN but it doesn't make sense.
i remember the time"Postals got an interview with Mick Jagger when the stones where playing the stadium it was a major score for a local news guy to get an exclusive interview with a global superstar like Mick channel 7 played the interview about ten times, really milking the fuck out of it morning news, news at noon, 6 o clock,11 o clock the frist time they showed it Postals introed it by intimating that he thought mick was "high" the stones went fucking ballistic. threaten to sue him into fucking oblivion he went on the air and groveled a very sincere apology about ten times saying "he didn't mean to indicate that mick was high on anything but life" later the rumor was Postals had gotten the interview with mick in the frist place by promising to get him high for free thats what the eighties where like. just crazy "cocaine decisions" all over the place
I met Irvs son Marc on Magazine St. in NewOrleans a month ago! He lives in SanFran.,CA...owns 3 music/movie stores...he recognized my Bflo accent immed. then told me who he was. Anyhow..was bizzare. Lol
A relatively minor detail, but I'm wondering if this is actually from 1982. The reason I say this is because there is file footage of Mr. Hauser, apparently after his sentence. It's dated December 14, 1982. So unless it's a mistake on their part, this must be from 1983 sometime.
...at 19 seconds in the announcer says to stay tuned for some 'problems with the Shuttle Challenger..."...uh yeah...it DID have some problems didn't it...
The Your County line will go up to Tipton (Hamilton) then crash like the hellistic chopper at Cavanaught (London). The Woolworths or Mackey's said they didnt have to buy but did. Redgrove being Albany moves the seat to Clinton (Buffalo) on December 31st. Shout out to Clinton Jackals, Corona Tremble USFL (NFL), Clinton East End Habadashers, Corona Hawks in MLBaseball, Corona GWins, Corona Bar Checks, Clinton Sharks in PLH (NHL), Clinton Amazins, Corona Trex in PLB (NBA).
This tv station is not the same as it was in 1982. WKBW-TV has lost all of its character, and the owners have milked it to death. Looks as if all good personnel have been laid off, or else retired. News there now is a joke with the way it is presented, and all of the mistakes the automation have caused. R.I.P. WKBW-TV
Irv Weinstein may have been a good newscaster, but he was an ass. When I was 17 he came into the grocery store where I worked. He berated my coworker for being clumsy and slow.
