WLED Quick Start Guide: How to Install on ESP8266 and Configure WiFi

This is a quick start guide to get WLED up and running from scratch on an ESP8266 module. Included topics are:
-Downloading a WLED binary release file
-Flashing the ESP8266 module
-Configuring WLED for WIFI access on your network
-Talking to the WLED module on the network from a browser
-Talking to the WLED module on the network from the free mobile app
Note: Although connecting the ESP8266 3.3V logic level data out pin to the 5 V logic level LED data in pin seems to allow successful communication for most people, technically a level shift device should be used to properly translate the 3.3 V logic to 5V logic to guarantee operation. Then the series data resistor would connect between the output of the level shifter and the input of the LED, located closer to the level shifter side.

You sir are a godsend. I had two ESP8266 modules that I could not load using the web installer however your video provided the answer. Your instructions are clear and concise. I wish I had come across your video prior to wasting an afternoon/evening trying to find a solution! Thanks you 🙏🙏🙏

Got this running except it never would work with the 330 ohm resistor as suggested. Also the first LED was always the wrong color unless blue was selected. Excellent tutorial. Finally found some place to start.

@@kellydjohnson I think you might need to put a level shifter between the nodemcu/ESP2866 and the data in of the first led. something about the nodemcu being 3v and the data needing to be at 5v. there is more about it all on the WLED wiki

nice video, I ran a couple of window displays over Cristmas using WLED, so far have not had a problem with needing a level shifter fot the first LED, WLED alows for the first LED to be the level shifter so you can remove it from the display pattern. Must say that the phone app is so easy to use a disabled child with a mental age of about 3 had hrs of fun playing with the lights. setting the colour and then jumping up and down when it changed colour. so many uses!

I’ll have to look into how it uses one LED as a shifter. I know I’ve heard that on a video somewhere before. (5 minutes later...). OK now it makes sense, dropping the supply voltage so that the minimum logic high input threshold is a fraction of the lower supply so the output at 3.3 V should be more reliable. It was just a quick glance, I Will look more into it, including how the forward drop of that diode will depend on the current drawn So I guess we actually turn on the first LED and that draws enough current to get the full diode drop. But if 0.7 x VDD being around 3 V is still only a minimum logic level in to guarantee being seen as high, I think the spec on the actual 3.3 logic out says it could go as low as 2.65 or something, it’s been a while since I calculated, so I’m not sure if it’s still fool proof or just gives a much better chance of not failing. Thanks for pointing it out! hackaday.com/2017/01/20/cheating-at-5v-ws2812-control-to-use-a-3-3v-data-line/ When I was first trying out the patterns the main confusing thing was how the color palette was able to impact the colors on certain animations but not others. It would have helped if that was more clear somewhere in the menus like maybe an asterisk beside each pattern that either can or can’t be manually adjusted.

@@GadgetReboot I know what you mean about the colours, i just play around until I get the affects I like. I've run a lot ws2812B's off of ESP2866's without a voltage changer and with short runs never had a problem. could be capacitance plays a part over a longer run with the reduced voltage. must give it a try someday.

When using 3V3 logic, then a 74HCT125 should be used for the data level-shifter.
@GadgetReboot
@GadgetReboot 4 года назад
Yes, that’s how I would design an official circuit but for getting up and running playing around, a lot of 5v things including the max7219 seem to respond to 3.3 V data even though the data sheet suggests the 5 V parts aren’t guaranteed to accept the 3.3 V logic in. I might add a note in the description to cover it just in case somebody does have trouble getting it to communicate. When I point out that we should level shift the data, I get lots of comments saying it’s not actually needed to get it working, so I thought I would try things the other way around this time!

@GadgetReboot

I haven't tried but the WLED info says it supports addressable types: NeoPixel (WS2812B, WS2811, SK6812) LEDs or SPI based chipsets like the WS2801 and APA102. So if the white strip is addressable and supports one of those, it should be doable, like the different strips I saw here: www.superlightingled.com/addressable-whitedual-white-led-strips-c-5_328.html Then the correct pins of course need to be hooked up to the module to interface it. I think I'll add this to a project to-do list...

@GadgetReboot
@GadgetReboot 3 года назад
Sounds like a non digitally addressable strip where the whole thing would have the same colors. The R G B pins would need transistors to allow PWM brightness control of each one (Adafruit has info here: learn.adafruit.com/rgb-led-strips/overview) and there's some WLED info here (I haven't tried it) github.com/Aircoookie/WLED/issues/58

Do i need Ohm Resistor i mean the Board has only 5V?
@GadgetReboot
@GadgetReboot 4 года назад
The resistor in series with the data pin, if it is not included it might lead to damage of the first pixel if the voltage tolerance on the data input for the LED is only 5 V. Without the resistor, The data wire might act like a mismatched transmission line which means the data signal will reflect back and forth and the 5 V might stack on top of itself, which the LED chip may not tolerate. adding the resistor minimizes those reflections and keeps the signal voltage within acceptable limits. I have had several strips of LEDs where the first one was damaged and I was not using the resistor.

Apparently there is a bug in the latests esphome flasher app for mac. I got the same problem as you, and found the following solution: Open a Terminal window on your mac, and paste the following command (beware to remote quotes): "sudo chmod +x /Applications/ESPHome-Flasher.app/Contents/MacOS/ESPHome-Flasher" After that, you will be able at least to execute ESPHome-Flasher. NB: you will also have to accept it to run in your System Preferences, because the developper is not a known official developper. But this is not related with your issue.

@GadgetReboot
@GadgetReboot 3 года назад
I followed the Wled Wiki link but without a level shifter so data went from ESP to the resistor and then to data in of the strip. 5v for the strip came from the USB 5v on the ESP. All grounds were the same from ESP. I didn't need a capacitor across the LED 5 volts for just a small number of LEDs. If using more LEDs than the USB 5 volts can power, I'd still keep grounds the same but then 5v for the LED strip would come from a different power supply instead of USB and its ground is tied to the ESP ground.
