Here's the complete broadcast of The 3:30 Movie presentation of the Robert Redford film "The Candidate" [1972] as presented on WLS Channel 7.
In this prescient comedy/drama with a documentary feel, Redford stars as a candidate for U.S. Senate in California who, with no chance of winning, decides to shake things up a lot.
Also stars Peter Boyle and co-starring Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson, Quinn Redeker, Morgan Upton, Michael Lerner, Kenneth Tobey, and Melvyn Douglas; and featuring cameos from such then-prominent political and "fourth estate" media figures as ABC's Howard K. Smith and Van Amburg (misspelled "Amberg") of sister station KGO Channel 7 in San Francisco, CA.
All return bumper voiceovers are by Al Parker.

This broadcast shows what happens to a movie when a TV station shows a film running 109 minutes in a 90 minute time slot with commercials.

I noticed when looking this up that when WLS aired this film back in 1976 (I guess because of Jimmy Carter getting popular?) that they aired it then over two days! That must have been a lot of filler.

I got fed up with the butchering of this film after about 20 minutes...terrible!
@Kramden429
@Kramden429 5 дней назад
I remember in the Chicago Tribune's weekly TV book reviewer Jack Hafferkamp would often print advisories as to how much of the film was chopped out in order to fit the time slot. Because of that I would often avoid watching the 3:30 movie on Channel 7 and see the reruns of "Superman" starring George Reeves on Channel 9 (which themselves were slightly truncated, but not as bad as the movies).

The 3:30 Movie, right after school is over. This is where I saw the Great Escape for the first time. 1974 or so I was living in Hinsdale.

Peter Boyle sold Redford on running with the expectation that he would lose. So when he won, neither he nor the campaign were prepared for what to do next.

@elgato894 For sure. It's also a commentary about how American politicians are constantly in campaign mode and they don't know how to do anything else.

This film was also held during this time period by WABC Channel 7 in New York and, on August 4th 1980, aired on "The 4:30 Movie" (followed, the next day, by "The President's Plane Is Missing"). But by 1984 it would move to WPIX Channel 11, and by 1988 to WWOR Channel 9. And speaking of WABC, it was 29 days after this airing, on May 31st, that longtime staff announcer Scott Vincent passed away after a bout with lung cancer, aged only 56.

Alan Kalter appears on camera in a hideous jacket at 1:02:23 for Florida Grapefruit Juice. Casey Kasem returns at 1:14:39 for Century 21.

Kalter was also voicing spots for Wyler's drink mix around this time. He really had the "just add water" market covered.

Hair seems too dark to be Kalter. But doing a search for more grapefruit commercials lead me to find Doug Funnie enjoying the drinks whilst being voiced by Garfield.

The Fayva ad is pretty amusing. Every shoe ad in the 70’s had happy people tapping their feet to music..😂

Loved when the 3:30 Movie would do King Kong Week or some other theme.
@wmbrown6
@wmbrown6 День назад
In my neck o' the woods, "King Kong" was held by WOR Channel 9 from 1956 until RKO sold the station in 1987. It was forever a staple on the "Million Dollar Movie," then in its final years on "Holiday Movie Specials" aired alongside "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young."

16:33 that’s young Matt Vasgersian, who is now a baseball announcer for the Angels and MLB Network. He’s in the credits 1:26:23 and I think his name is spelled wrong.

You think? Bet on it. It is noted in the description how the surname of KGO Channel 7's legendary anchor Van Amburg was misspelled "Amberg" . . .

Kinda wild that the secretary from Ferris Beuller's school is all like, 'get these black people off my block'. She seemed pretty friendly, but I'm gonna say I'm not a fan of that kind of reaction, especially since the anger is in the wrong direction.
