Here are my last two videos featuring the 1981-1983 2000-series Breda railcars on the Green Line at Hyattsville Crossing heading to Branch Avenue station. Wasn’t planning on uploading this yet, but with WMATA announcing the 2000-series retirement, I had to upload this right away.
As of May 10, 2024, WMATA had officially retired the 2000-series from revenue service. After 40-years of service, WMATA announced on May 9, 2024 that the 2000-series will be retired from revenue service. Modifications to the 7000-series wheels, and the implementation of 6-car 7000-series trains allowed WMATA to retire the 2000-series before the 8000-series were to be delivered.
The 2000-series were built between 1981-1983, and debuted in 1983 when WMATA began running to Huntington and Fairfax County. Manufactured by Breda, they were completely different from the 1000-series, having filp-dot signs, exterior announcement speakers, and less seating than the 1000-series. They were rehabbed by Alstom in the early 2000s, replacing the original “buzzing” propulsion system, and adding the current propulsion system, replacing the flip-dot signs with LED destination signs, having newer interior lighting, and new colored seats, similar to what’s found on the 5000-series at the time of rehabilitation.
In 2020, the 2000-series were sidelined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but were brought out when the 6000-series were sidelined in November 2020. They were sidelined again in early 2021, but were again brought out in October 2021 due to the 7000-series fiasco, and have been running in service until early 2024, when they begin to be sidelined again in March 2024. In their final years of service, they have been mostly running coupled up with 3000-series railcars due to their similarity compatibility, and occasionally having a full train set here and there.
Despite now being retired, WMATA hinted at a special thing (don’t take that for granted as I don’t even know too) to commemorate the 2000-series retirement. Also, two railcars (likely 2000-2001) will be preserved by WMATA, and Money Train Cars (2016-2017) will continue to operate in service.

I’m going to miss the 2000k series. It was one of the best.
