How can you forget about Goldie? The sexiest begger on the tube. Unless of course you have a flat screen TV then it's not really a tube anymore. Damn these modern technologies, they keem making me have to revamp my vocabulary.
I got in so much trouble in like 1987 when I was left unsupervised watching WNED during a pledge drive. Being very young I didn't understand what the pledge drive was, and so all I really got out of it was that Square One TV was in trouble. So I called in; the problem was that I lived in Cattaraugus County, and it was a long distance call. When I explained to my mom that the lady on the TV wanted to talk to her, I stood by and watched my mom look increasingly horrified and angry. She ended the call politely and then yelled at me for an hour. Then she said I was never allowed to use the phone ever again. As far as I know she never took that back before she died a few years ago, but as evidenced by this story I wasn't that great at listening to her anyway.
She was a gem and an unbelievably good talker. Oh, sure it was annoying during Monty Python-athon (?!) but there a lot of multimillionaire Hollywood celebrities (cough~John~cough~Cleese~cough)that owe their massive fortunes to this woman.
DAMN you! Some people have all the luck. I was going to look her phone number up and give her a call but my wife asked me not to. Now, Bob (of Sesame Street fame) *IS* in the phone book but again my wife said it's probably not a good idea just giving a friendly fan "hello" to a TV celebrity's home phone number. Well... OK. Funny though, Sigourney Weaver's uncle Doodles Weaver (of Spike Jones fame) supposdely welcomed fan phone calls before he killed himself.
Just waxing nostalgic but I hope that although we don't see much (if any) of Goldie on PBS any more, I hope she is doing well, etc. Always loved her ever-optimistic and perky personality while asking for pledges on PBS.
I used to get into trouble for waking my parents up after Goldie told me to after Sesame Street back in the day. She's so sedated on the cooking shows she's on now..
So I saw the article in The Buffalo News and replied to the author that she didn't mention Goldie's age. I said to her "someone mentioned the... bombshell regarding my favourite blonde bombshell. What you left out was.... how old is she? I mean, she's one of those women who has a timeless aspect about her, where she looks (to me) the same now as she did 25-30 years ago." Her response: "I asked her, but Goldie wasn't telling... Paula Voell"
Thanks for posting this! I was trying to explain Goldie's behaviour to someone who's never seen her during a "begathon". My parents and I would always make mention of how she always sounded like she was on the verge of crying.
I had this page on twice and double Goldie. Haha. I was looking for the link. Allegedly in her own words: "I certainly have always been able to understand that I annoyed people. You're watching something and then there I am. It was worse before the days of the remote when you couldn't mute me or change the channel." Retired. She seems timeless. I still want her body. So judging from the article in the Buffalo News her real name is Barbara. Hm. Married in 1981. That answers that.
Hahahaha, I remember seeing these pledge drives in the middle of "Sesame Street" when I was 4, and them asking the kids to "run and get their mommies and daddies so they could tell them something important".
@leafyutube Indeed. When she would appear, my wife would say "Your babe is on TV!" She knows I had (have) a long time crush on Goldie. Oh the things I'd like to do with/to her..... Yum yum.
