Whenever I see Howrah Bridge this is the first song that automatically plays in my mind and in his mellifluous tone he says "Na Jaane Kyon Laga Mujhe, Ke Muskura Rahi Hai Woh". The level of tandem between the singing and the lyrics in the song is something I've seldom noticed in any other song! No other hindi song comes close to the genius of this one. Let me explain. Gulzar's lyrics in the first and the second stanza are poetry at its very best. He's basically playing with similar words but expressing brilliantly the emotions between his past flame and his current infatuation. "Jhuki hui nigah kahin mera khayaal tha Dabee dabee hasee mein ek haseen sa gulaal tha Main sochta tha mera naam gunguna rahi hai woh na jaane kyon laga mujhe ki muskura rahi hai woh" In the above stanza, focus on how the lines are basically set in the past in a reminiscent manner. All these words have a slight re-arrangement in the second stanza to show a more hopeful and confident present. One song that goes from past to present with a limited set of words used in different tenses is just writing of the highest order. Pure genius! That was the lyrical side of the song. Also notice how Kishore kumar's voice is soft and thoughtful in the first stanza. Especially how he sings "Kahin" in the first line. He renders it in a way that he seems lost in his thoughts. Most of the singing is done using a heady voice. It's mellow. The important difference in singing between the first and the second stanza is how Kishoreda starts with a more booming and confident voice in the second half. Especially the lines "Mera khayaal hai" and "Main jaanta hoon". He's expressing a sense of surety and security of feelings with a much more chest-baesd voice. It's strong and sure. The singing in this song elevates the lyrics to its deserved heights. "Mera khayaal hai abhi jhuki hui nigah mein khili hui hasee bhi hai dabee hui si chaah mein Main jaanta hoon mera naam gunguna rahi hai woh yeh khayaal hai mujhe ke paas aa rahi hai woh" The genius of Kishore Kumar, Gulzar and Hemant Kumar that's subtly permeating throughout this song is unparalleled in my opinion. This is by far the best song ever produced in hindi cinema.
