Wohlhaupter Boring Head - Perfect Restoration (From Mk5 to SK40)

This Wohlhaupter UPA 5 was in okay-ish condition but hasn't seen any love lately.
I took it all apart, cleaned and buffed everything aswell as set it all back together.
There are a few versions which have a detachable connection with a differential thread. It is possible to change from e.g. Mk5 to SK40 with just a different style of connector.
With this version the body was made out of one piece and had to be completely remodeled in order to adapt it to my mill.
Thank you for watching, leave a comment, or like the video. It means a lot!
If you see some similarities to videos from mymechanics - I'm a huge fan of his work. Take this "perfect restauration" as an appreciation of his skills!

I have one of those. It is the most beautifully made thing I have seen. Little touches like the small balls that lock the leadscrew unless the hex key has been inserted. I have considered changing mine to the standard Wohlhaupter interface, but the fact is that it is too big for my milling machine really, and I have a UPA3.
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 4 года назад
Yeah the UPA 5 is a really big and heavy tool aswell and it takes up a lot of z-travel. Just compare it to the small sk40 connection :P But I'm with you on the small details. Everything is very well designed.

Great work !! I'm making a new SK30 spindle to my Mk4 spindle of my Wohlhaupter UPA3, on the Mk4 taper there was a Sk40 sleeve for the Deckel Fp1, it was impossible to take out, maybe it was put at high temperature with a press on the Mk4 spindle, i cut out the Sk40 with the late and with the same tool insert like your; now i try to make the Sk30 spindle, thank you for your nice video !!! Man, I have a UPA 4/S5 that has a 1-1/2” shank.. I need a R8.. I’m considering modifying it but I’m concerned that the little Bridgeport can’t handle the large head. These Wohlhaupter heads are a true masterpiece. And hard as glass ! I’m shocked that you could even turn it ! I would imagine that once you get below that case hardened layer it’s probably just like turning 4140 or 1144. But I have a feeling it’s pretty deep. I’m worried about tearing mine down in fear I won’t be able to reassemble it. Your video gives me some confidence.. not sure if it’s enough though. lol 😂 Also I’ve been trying to find out what in the heck accepts a straight shank that large with a Key way and two 1/4” dimples ? It’s just shy of being long enough to cut down to an R8. It has a 3/8-18 threaded hole in the end too. I’ve never seen any tooling like it. But this is by far the best video I’ve seen on modifying a boring/facing head. Thinking about ordering some diamond tip inserts and having a go at it.. 🤷‍♂️

So that I understand correctly, the 12 clicks are increments from the main bar slide, so use the main to get close, then nudge it in at the end with the fine adjust?

Nicely done, you had me worried there for a bit, I probably would have tried for an interference fit but it's not going anywhere. I've been looking for and dreaming about getting a Wooly 3 or a Japanese copy with an NT40 taper but they are thin on the ground in Australia! I believe they are much more common in Europe. Thank you for the look inside that work of art.

Hi Peter, I'm in Coffs, so in the Boonies as far as tool resellers go! I've looked, virtually, at a few out of Melbourne and one out of an expensive dealer in Adelade, as well as on fleebay.. Not found 'That one!' Yet. Priced a new NAREX, phew, nearly had palpitations over that figure. I bought a new TM face and bore out of Hairy and F**kit as I had a job needing 200 tool stick out. Not really happy with the results, 18mm tooling just not rigid enough. The search goes on, the Universe will provide, I trust it! Hahaaa!

You have an excellent taste in music, was that the radio playing in the background or did you have your own playlist on? If it's the latter, I really would like your playlist. It sounded like the perfect music to have on in the background while your working in your machine shop 😊

i just found a similar head at work , probably UPA6 because it's bigger , on an 50 taper . I'm not sure on the connection type . Could be integral 50 taper , anyway.... it's an older 50 , it's not sk50 , but luckily i also found a an sk50 to old 50 taper adapter , didn't even know such thing exists .... . I have not used it so far , but it's a monster for sure , about 15-20kg . I'm sure it's used , but everything looks so well made . I have a question : this boring head has a course pitch adjustment , on one end , how can you make that rotate . Mines seem stuck . And it's a pain to adjust only via the 0.01 fine adjust .

Insert the hex key fully into the socket on the coarse feed. it is locked otherwise. Fully inserting the key unlocks the mechanism. My used one has a crack in the key from some dumb gorilla trying to force it instead of reading the manual.

@@kisspeteristvan I have the UPA 4 and I'm fairly certain the 4 and up don't have rapid reverse. Only the 3 does. The manual says to use the quickset spindle, i.e. the one you just figured out how to unlock. You can download the manuals from Wohlhaupter in case you didn't know that.

how round was the bore and was there any taper in the walls, though...
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
Taper in the wall is almost impossible if you clamped the boring head. The bore was as round as my spindle bearing allowed. But with that much weight you also dont want to run it to fast to create a major imbalance on your spindle.

@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
I cant tell from here. There are two versions - the older one (which I got) is machined solid. But newer versions do have interchangable shanks. If yours is one of that newer style, you should be able to tell I guess.

what happens when the travel for the facing mechanism runs out of travel? will it just run out of travel and spin freely or does it rip your arm off xD
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
There are two end stops built in and two adjustable endstops (which are missing right now but would fit into the groove at the side) which disengange all the feed knobs. So unfortunatelly no ripped off arms :(
@pieterveenders9793
@pieterveenders9793 3 года назад
Ow, and another question (to both Roetz 4.0 but everyone else as well). I'm still very new to metalworking so forgive my ignorance for the following question. But is there a specific reason (or perhaps even several?) why it would be preferable to use a boring head to bore out a hole to a certain diameter instead of doing it in the lathe and boring out the hole with a regular tool bit to that same specific diameter by adjusting the cross slide outward from the axis of the workpiece?
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
The most obvious is: you can do precise bores and features within one setup on the mill as opposed to have it re-setuped on a lathe and loosing all your datums
@pieterveenders9793
@pieterveenders9793 3 года назад
@@Roetz40 I was already half expecting that a boring head would be more precise and is easier to finely tune for boring a certain diameter, but thanks for confirming my suspicions!
@genedavella9817
@genedavella9817 3 года назад
It depends on the shape and size of the part you are boring. Working with large equipment, sometimes it's easier to put on a mill than a lathe.Or where you have several bores on one part next to each other. (multi stage reciprocating pumps) They are also good for thin walled parts where the chuck on a lathe can cause distortion for chucking pressure

Man, if I was you, I would use rubber gloves at 1:28. Chemicals on your bare hand can lead to dermatitis and other skin rashes that will dry up the cells earlier in life, leading to premature ageing, cracked skin, blotchy hands (Palmar Erythema) and many other ailments leading to itchy hands. The fumes are also dangerous for your lungs. Why I say this? Because I am one of those careless fools who though I had steel hands until the 'acid' set in and I suffered 17 years as Mr Scratchy. Once the itch starts it spread to other parts of the body. So, keep using bare hands while washing your babies for now. Tomorrow you'll see.
@Roetz40
@Roetz40 3 года назад
Thanks for the advise. Actually I did have severe problem with my skin in oily environments in the past. In this case we're not working with agressive chemicals, the cleaning agent in the washing station is purely organic kind. But in general you should wear gloves, I agree.
