Basically the new cba effectively creates a hard cap on the amount a team can sensibly spend, yet the amount of money players are eligible to receive continues going up and up. Like, at some point something will have to give, otherwise what you pointed out is exactly what will happen. But this also sort of the entire goal. It allows more “undesirable” teams to get and retain good players, because the market won’t be there elsewhere (e.g. Cavs being able to retain DMitch, Orlando being able to steal away KCP, Knicks not being able to hold on to Hartenstein). But how long is this really sustainable? Perhaps this is the whole purpose for the upcoming expansion teams.
