Woken up by angry locals and some all too familiar engine issues (Winter van life gets tough)
As our winter van life journey continues, some all too familiar problems arise, you all remember our huge van life breakdown in Spain right?? With a scarily similar repeat of our previous engine troubles, this plays on our mind, as does a whole new bad experience for us.. with angry locals knocking on the van at night!
On top of all that we have the mandatory winter vanlife frozen pipes to deal with.
Still, we are determined to have fun so, as we unexpectedly find ourselves going from France to Switzerland, we take on the slopes with some tobogganing and visit some famous landmarks, oh, and the scenery gets ridiculous!
Check out our instagram for real time updates..

Hopefully you are enjoying this European travel series as much as we are and we are managing to show you just some of the stunning landscapes that France and Switzerland have to offer in this European campervan travel vlog.
As usual, we have tried to include a bit of everything, some cinematic scenery mixed with our usual female van life foolery, we always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper youtube travel series as we, two female travelers and vanlifers, attempt to travel across Europe in our rolling tiny home.

First - you have to change van for the next big trip, this is becoming beyond the joke. From myself I can recommend Sprinter 313 cdi 2.2 cdi , my father done with this engine from 60K till 135K without any issues , then only he have to change thermostat because the temp with the engine no go above 60 C, but the car still driving when the fault coming up !:)

One thing I love about your vlogs is the realness. You don’t edit out the bad parts of your journey & make viewers see vanlife through rose tinted glasses. You’re a massive inspiration because you face whatever challenge is thrown your way & always have a backup plan. Life is never perfect & it should never be perceived to be. Keep up the amazing work & most importantly - have fun! 😊 Xx

It's quite normal (allegedly) to lose a couple of inches in the cold. You had the right plan though: go somewhere warm and get a friendly local to see to it! Also, no story's too good that it can't be interrupted by a quality innuendo! 😂 Love AJ's new clobber by the way. Looks like he enjoys a trip to the good shops! I'm only partway through the video so far, but the one thing that I worry about for you ladies is the dangers from unscrupulous prats. I'm so thankful you're all safe. Anyway! Wondering why you didn't just get some more velcro for AJ's coat instead of trekking around trying to find another jacket. If needed, you could always pin the one side of the velcro to his coat but better if you sew it on - still, just wondering. Oh, Louise is right, Switzerland is stunning. :)

Honestly, you two were definitely made for one another. Loving catching up on the older videos. When we are on the road, we have to take the good with the bad. Trust me, I know very cold winters well. I am from Labrador where there are only 2 seasons, 8 months of winter and 4 months of summer. That inner tubing was awesome. Years ago, my sister in law and I went down a huge water slide. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. We were both quite large at the time. We came out of the shoots at the same time. We made a splash so big it soaked the onlookers at poolside. I am glad I did it but never again. LOL.

Hubby suggests that possibly when the engine changed you got an air bubble in the coolant and when it worked its way through to the header tank that caused the apparent loss of coolant. He is expecting this problem to come up in our Van-essa!

I hope your Fanny is feeling better 🤪 but if not, I found a tip that's a possibility: "A thermostat stuck in the open position will allow a constant flow of coolant causing a lower operating temperature. This increases emission, makes the engine wear faster, and leaves the temperature gauge reading cool at all time" 🤞

In my Diesel I used to slide a garbage bag between the a/c and radiator about half of the radiator, it gives the thermostat a chance to manage the radiator temp. One of the benefits was the fuel filter didn’t have to be changed as often as the wax didn’t come out of suspension, you might find the temp gauge works normally as well.

Well, now that I’ve got to the end of your video, this is my final comment for this one. I love all that you do, you give us a great mixture of van life, scenery and the general day to day crap that you sometimes face. It’s a great mix and you never just concentrate on one thing such as the drone shots, or the scenery so in my opinion, you four are doing great! If the coolant disappears and it is not leaking or ending up in the oil, check if your engine has a breathing valve on the very top point of the cooling pipe. Mine was stuck and the engine sprayed the coolant on top of the engine. It vaporized leaving no trace of a leak. The sudden event in your case might be caused by the air pressure change and altitude. 👍 ps. Get a can of alcoholic windscreen washer fluid and pour some of that in your gray water tank to keep it from freezing. 🤓❄️🇫🇮

Engine temperatures (as advertised on a French gauge) can be mainly two things: 1. the gauge is faulty or the wiring connected to it is dodgy or the temperature sensor is faulty (My money would be on the last one) OR 2. the thermostat is stuck in open or halfway position causing the engine to not be able to maintain a steady temperature. Best way to check the engine temperature is to have a hand held IR thermometer which you can point at the engine block where the temperature sensor is at (or if better accessible) the outgoing hose to the heater core. A less reliable way to see if the engine is getting up to temp is to feel het heat coming from the heater core. If that amount of heat fluctuates then the engine coolant temperature is obviously also fluctuating and most likely the thermostat controlling the water flow to the main radiator in front has issues and needs to be changed out...

Hey Gals. If your engine water temperature gauge is going up and down you may have an air blockage in your coolant system. You may need to bleed the air out. Not familiar with your engine so you can look it up on Internet or service manual. My van is a real xxxx to do. Take care have a great adventure from us pensioners George and Jane.
@grenvilleweston9623
@grenvilleweston9623 Год назад
Your coolant loss could be due to an airlock when the new engine was put in. A couple of hot and cold cycles and it seems to be fine. Your temperature guage problems could be related in which case it could rectify itself in time, or the sensor could be duff.

Its quite possible that coolant problem could be the early on set of the head gasket going. Had the same things happening on my van a few years back. I just plodded on doing what your doing, constant checking etc. Big mistake. In the end it was head gasket and catastrophic breakdown. Tried head gasktet sealers that you add to coolant but it didn't work, was too far gone. If I had done it much earlier it would have worked and dealt with the problem in the longterm. Some of these sealers can be added to the coolant and just live in the system as a precaution and preventative measure. They are very cheap to buy and you have everything to lose by not acting now as a precaution. Might save a massive garage bill too. Hope this helps.

I loved a good mix up of content. So drone shots, scenery, everyday van life, AJ shots, architecture and fun facts, 2 min tours, innuendo.

Content is always fun to watch. Love the scenery. Love the history. Love the banter. Sorry you had a scary time in France. But onwards and upwards.

Oh, what a perfectly ridiculously beautiful winter wonderland! And in a country that knows how to clear their roads, too!

I love the mix of stunning scenery and the reality of day to day life in the van. Watching AJ in the snow was so cute seeing him enjoy it so much and embrace his inner puppy. Switzerland looks awesome and I am looking forward to following the rest of the trip

I drove all the way through Switzerland on my overland journey from UK to Malta, Biscuit tin scenery around every corner, a beautiful place. ❤

Incredible scenery, you film it so well. I've always wanted to go to Switzerland and it was wonderful to see the beautiful Gruyeres. Mum and Dad visited the Berne area of Switzerland a lot and always came back buzzing because of the mountain air and views. I love how AJ went all puppy like in the snow - he's an awesome dog.

Great video. Might be wise to get the van seen. I know it's sort of working, but this might just be the early stages of a fault that will need a garage, and you really don't want to be up a mountain if you break down. Otherwise, what a great place to end up. You two are spreading a bit of happiness, so keep it up and thank you XX

I like all of it. I hate that you have to deal with the frozen and broken water pipes - yuck! And, that's a part of your life and your journey. Your drone shots are a part of the art that you've grown into. AJ playing in the snow was such a bonus! I'm a subscriber because I am along for the journey, whatever or wherever it takes you two...uh, four! Be safe. Keep warm.

You girls are doing great a mix of daily ups and downs and stunning scenery with some drone shots, all mixed in is the only way to be honest and true and realistic of van life so don't worry, keep on being you, be safe and enjoy yourselves! 👍❤️😘🤣🇬🇧

Fantastic, love watching AJ in the snow. What about summer? Does she like the snow. It's nice to see the ups and downs. You give us the real story. Not just the pretty side of van life. Can't wait for the next one. Take care all four of you. 💛

No she is not a massive fan, but it’s been a bit cold I think for her outside, temp is changing a little now so she may venture out, she is the same back home too hot or too cold and she is like nope I’ll stay in bed 😂

I enjoy the everyday living, part of van life. How you deal with the various problems that arise. The both of you are so natural together that it’s very easy to watch and enjoy. I do like the drone footage too.. Louise is a brilliant photographer/videographer and her editing skill’s amaze me. She has come a long way in a very short space of time.. Well done both of you. Another corker episode.. 👏👏👏

Caraflow Waste Water System Antifreeze specially developed for caravans -20°C Freeze Protection Caravan Warehouse. Pour a little in the sink plug hole before bed. Just enough to lay in the pipe under the van.

Should’ve searched professional moochers on RU-vid Em, we’ve been in our van each year since 2019 😁 AJ looks proper swanky in his new jacket 😍

Regarding the night incident and banging on the van - that is one downside of "epic" but isolated park-ups. A campervan in a spot like that will stand out more, and is more likely to attract the attention of unpleasant people. On occasion I will use spots like these, but most of the time I will try to park somewhere next to some other cars, and close to some human activity. People who are up to no good are less likely to behave like that when there could be other witnesses around, or the probability of someone intervening.

A great video, thanks guys. I love it all; the cool shots and seeing you have some fun but also the reality of van life and the day to day crap, as Emily puts it. I love how you even make the shots about the coolant issues snazzy, good production and editing. Thanks again.

Love the video. Can empathise with the engine anxiety of a trip to the Alps in a van particularly in winter. The scenery makes it all worth it though.

Thermostat swap shouldn't be expensive but I'd look at the connector on the temp sender first, may be the cold making it come loose.

You did the right thing by moving, a guy i know was in France with his family and had some drunk local bang on his van one night demanding money so he could stay in a laybuy. He paid him €10 just to move him on.
