Oh, I think you're unaware that I regularly film phone drivers with a view to reporting them so the police can prosecute. The first guy was on the phone, and is actually the same person as the second guy who threw water on me. I think he was upset that I laughed at him for dropping his phone when he saw the camera. He knew he was risking a mobile phone conviction, I think.

@@CyclingMikey ALL are very good points. I've often wondered why the cell phone manufacturers aren't REQUIRED to address this issue? I mean with all of the ways these phones are constantly tracking you (even with location off), it seems like it would be fairly easy to disable/suspend (at least) texting, social media apps, and internet (except gps) if the phone is moving faster than say 5-6mph (fast walking speed) and for 30-60 seconds after it has stopped moving. I rode a bicycle in my town for a few years (while driving a cab for work) and I grew up riding motorcycles. I've seen first hand (many times) how quickly things can go sideways when it comes to inattentive drivers.

When you video people, I think it would be best for you just not to engage at all. When you say things like "that was hilarious" you are then going to get a reaction, one of these times it won't be just words and you put yourself in danger. Just record, then prosecute.

This driver wasn't antagonised. He just chose to be offended that I a) filmed him using his phone and then b) laughed when he dropped it because of the camera. When you're caught doing wrong, just admit it and don't plot your revenge like a 3yo with a tantrum.

I'm still really delighted that I out-thought him and caught him. Less impressed that he out-ran me, but I'm twice his age and haven't done any running for a long time. I used to be quite a handy cross country runner haha, so him outrunning me dented my ego.

It's not though because a) it's not illegal on a bike and b) there's a specific 999 call exemption anyway. Had any of the drivers I'd filmed been making a 999 call I wouldn't have reported them and/or they'd have had a perfect defence in court.

Nope - it was a 999 call which is a specific exemption. Once I saw there was no more point to following him, I pulled over and walked and continued the call to the police. Plus it's illegal in 2 tonnes of car, and quite rightly so, and not illegal on 10kg of bike.

That's exactly right.Quite a number of countries do background checks via various databases. Range Rover boy may find it a problem travelling to certain countries or indeed getting turned right around back to to Uk on arrival. Also some companies conduct a background check for employment. Throwing that water on Mikey might cost Range Rover boy more than he imagined in terms of his future travel and employment prospects. Perhaps he should have thought of that first. Too bad, so sad.

There's also the less tangible effect it may have on famly life. The father _might_ (judging by the repoted reaction) have thought their offspring was a better person than they ended up being. Hard to maintain the same level of respect for somebody when you're faced with evidence of what kind of person they really are...

999 calls are a specific exemption in law, dude.

Regulation 110(5) provides that no offence is committed where a person makes a call to the emergency services on 999 or 112 in response to a genuine emergency, where it is unsafe or impracticable for them (or the provisional licence holder) to cease driving whilst the call is made.

I see your point, however it's not illegal to use the phone on a bicycle, and I was making a 999 call which is a straight out exemption for drivers. I don't phone when I'm riding the rest of the time. And yes, I did feel I had to keep following him at the time, but once I lost him I dismounted and carried on the 999 call on the pavement, walking. Remember that it's hardly dangerous to anyone else on a 10kg bicycle, but extremely dangerous to others when you're in a 1,500kg Range Rover.
