Wolf and Modular

A couple of years ago I owned an Akai Timbre Wolf synthesizer and decided to try to sell it because I wanted a Roland System-8 synthesizer. Well, I could never find someone who wanted the Wolf for the price I was asking. Which is just nuts because it's a sweet little synth and I upgraded the nasty little plastic side cheeks with a hand-built wood case that included a carved wolf badge. I have decided to re-introduce it to the studio (alongside the Roland, which I bought anyway) and this is just a little jam to acquaint myself with the Wolf's quirks.

Nice! I love my timbre wolf. I often talk about the fact the it got “bad reviews on the internet”. So happy nobody bought it from you!

Wow, that started off as the strangest of harmonic patterns and tuning, but then the series just evolved into something else. That's a killer groove by the way, starting at 2:24! Ok, this is one of my favorite pieces if yours.

The Wolf has a bad reputation. I remember trying one out at Guitar Center and being rather unimpressed, but you know what? Being a flop has made it valuable and rare and you are lucky to still have it. No other synth has that specific feature set, and there's no such thing as "bad gear." In the hands of the right person even "junk" can shine ... that epileptic Plaits beat 1/3 of the way in really brought the whole ensemble to life and knit it together in a fun way.

Thank you for staying to the percussion part! It really was the glue. I think I know what you mean and hopefully the Wolf will fill a gap somewhere. I do need to run it through a couple effects pedals to make it sound acceptable. I wasn't aware that it merited an episode of Bad Gear until after I purchased it. Watching the episode, I had to agree with everything he said yet somehow the little pup had wormed its way into my heart. Like your favorite smashed harmomica that will never be in tune again, but you keep it in your overalls pocket because you love that damp tinny sound.

Patrick! Who is the guy pictured in your blanc panel? I can't sleep peacefully if I don't resolve this doubt! 🤣

I'm so glad you asked! I am pleased to introduce Caspar Wistar, who was a scientist in Philadelphia during the 1780's. Not much is known about him but he appears to have been infuential in the areas of medicine and archeology. Here's an informational link about him: www.wistar.org/about-wistar/our-story/

Keep it and try selling it in 20 years when some hipster is willing to pay top dollar for kitschy "its bad in a good way" gear 🍌
